5,0 su 5 stelle Emotional cold case for Kate and Tristan

I do love this series and with Devil’s Way Robert Bryndza has given us a book that is teaming with mystery and unanswered questions, but which also pulls at the heartstrings somewhat. With Kate’s latest case involving a young boy who has been missing for more than a decade how can it not? A chance meeting after a near deadly accident leads to Kate meeting the boy’s grandmother Jean who asks her to find out once and for all what really happened to young Charlie all those years ago. Tragic accident or something more sinister? With no body and the evidence trail being beyond cold, this is one mystery that will take everything Kate and Tristan have got, and it’s a case that really does not disappoint.

I really do like the character of Kate. She is flawed and damaged, beaten down by her past, but she is not entirely broken. Anyone who has followed the series will know that she has a very dark history, personal demons that she has to deal with in a daily basis and every day can feel like an uphill struggle. With a terrible misjudgment on her part nearly costing her life, this book takes on a very different tone. Her son is studying overseas, she no longer has her best friend and neighbour for support, and much of life seems overwhelming for Kate which adds a layer of personal conflict to an already challenging case. There is little to lose in this particular investigation as events occurred some eleven years earlier, but the emotional pull of a family tragedy really does take its toll and that is captured perfectly in the story, the author reflecting the complexity of the case in Kate’s own struggles.

There is a deep emotional core to this book. You can feel that something ominous is about to happen from the very beginning, and there is a real sense of impending tragedy in the way the author has framed the story. But it is the mystery – the not knowing – which really captures the imagination. it doesn’t help that all of the characters involved in the investigation, from the family to the police who headed up the case, have some kind of shady past making their testimony hard to accept. That said, with one possible exception, there is a sense of them seeking redemption and wanting to right a past wrong, even if the conclusion to the case seems inevitable. There are a few scenes in this book which speak to the tragedy of the whole case, and ones which really did sadden me. Not the expected breakdown of Charlie’s family after his disappearance, but a reveal that comes as part of the investigation and that proves to be a crucial turning point in getting to the truth.

This is perhaps a slower paced book than its predecessors by virtue of the case they are investigating. It doesn’t make it any less compelling, and the mixture of characters both infuriate and amuse in equal measure, the partnership between Kate and Tristan being one of the real winning elements of the series. You do get a real sense of place from the book, the isolation of the location from which Charlie disappeared and that is one of the author’s real skills, being able to take readers to the heart of the scene, even if it is purely a work of imagination. I felt the cold of the stream, the wealth of possibilities for what could really have happened to Charlie and it helped to keep the mystery, and the tension, alive. Definitely recommended, especially for fans of the series.

If you love Robert Byndza’s Erika Foster, then you will also adore Kate Marshall and if you've never read either but enjoy a good detective story set in a scenic place. you are in for a treat!

Kate is a former police detective who is currently running a holiday business and private detective agency with her friend and former co-worker Tristan.

Kate is also a recovering alcoholic who had a child with a serial killer….a lot! This background, however has helped to form an interesting character that you root for and want to know more about.

Kate and Tristian are slowly building their business and quietly gaining a reputation . A chance encounter leads to them being asked for help by a grandmother whose grandson went missing years ago while on a family camping trip ,Kate and Tristan are tasked with uncovering clues and a trail that went cold long ago.

Tristian is surprised to find that someone he knows is connect to the case and Kate is overcoming a health scare that has shaken her confidence.

While trying to unearth what happened to that little boy so long ago, Kate is surprised to uncover ties to another murder. Was the murder of someone assigned o protect children somehow connected to her missing child? Was there something sinister in the family, and is the secret of the missing boy one that will remain hidden?

As Kate and Tristan follow a twisting trail of clues, how many lives will be impacted by what they find?

I loved this return to the Kate Marshall story.. I especially love the descriptions of the campgrounds and marshes. I also love how the author is not afraid to show how vulnerable Kate is and that her sobriety is something that she does think about and has a support system for, instead of the books where the alcoholic is miraculously healed. The conflict between Tristan and is sister is also very real and reflective of real families.

Most importantly , I loved that it only briefly referenced her involvement in the previous serial killer case. The first book in the series was a great introduction, but that story was revisited one two many times in the subsequent books.

Tristian is trying to find his footing as living as an openly gay man and declare his independence from his sister, and Kate is continuing to straddle a line between sobriety and finding her purpose. while overcoming her horrific past and regret for the time she missed with her son. You can also see Tristan being given more responsibility and taking more risks within the agency.
Although it was fairly obvious to me early on what happened, it was satisfying getting to the revelation in the end, and a very realistic outcome of the ramifications. It is not always a happy ending!

I really enjoy the characters that Bryndza creates. If you like police and detective procedurals, you will enjoy this book. I don’t think it is necessary to have read the previous books in the series, but it wouldn’t hurt.
I can’t wait to have more Kate Marshall and Erika Foster….bring on the next one.

*I was graciously given an advanced copy of this book by the publisher and NetGalley in turn for an honest review..

5,0 su 5 stelle Another great read from Robert.

The fourth book in the Kate Marshall series starts dramatically with private investigator Kate ending up in hospital after a near fatal swimming accident. It is whilst she is recovering there that she meets Jean who is in the bed next to her. Upon hearing that Kate is a Private Investigator, Jean tells her the tale of her grandson, Charlie, who went missing eleven years ago at the age of three. Once Kate is well enough to leave hospital she and her investigative partner Tristan take on the case. But as they start to investigate it is clear that Jean is hiding things from her past and Kate and Tristan have many questions and theories to solve.
Once again Robert has written a fast paced, tense, roller coaster of a story which grabs you from the start and keeps you guessing until the end. Obviously anything involving a child tends to add to the intensity of stories and this one was no exception. But Robert’s brilliant character depictions and the depiction of Dartmoor itself was very evocative and added to the tense, moody feeling of the novel. Another first class read by Robert.

5,0 su 5 stelle Kate Marshall is back!

Kate Marshall is a strong swimmer, swimming daily in Thurlow Bay where she lives, so nobody is more surprised than her when she gets caught in a riptide and nearly drowns. Whilst recovering in hospital she meets Jean, another patient on her ward, who tells her how eleven years earlier her three year old grandson Charlie disappeared during a camping trip on Dartmoor, whilst in Jean's care and has never been found. Jean is desperate to find out what happened to him and Kate agrees that she and her colleague Tristan will take on the case, believing it to be a straightforward missing person case they are unprepared for what they begin to uncover, especially the brutal murder of a social worker who had links to the family, is there more to this than Jean is letting on?

I'm a huge fan of Bryndza's work and was so excited to hear that Kate Marshall was returning in the fourth book of the series. Devil's Way had me hooked right from the first page and didn't let me go till the end. It's a fast paced, tense rollercoaster of a ride with many twists and turns along the way. A missing child would be the stuff of any parents worst nightmares, but the not knowing how, why or even if you'll ever see them again must be tenfold and Bryndza depicts this perfectly but he has the best team on the case to solve it. I love the relationship between Kate and Tristan, they work so well together and it was great to see him step up while she was in hospital and prove what a worthy partner he is in the business. The plot is well crafted with some really interesting characters and eerie Dartmoor really was the perfect setting for the story. If you've never read any of this series I would recommend that you start from the beginning to get the background of the characters. I'm looking forward to this authors next book which will be his first standalone thriller!!

5,0 su 5 stelle Another page turner featuring P.I. Kate Marshall

‘Devil’s Way’ by Robert Bryndza is Book 4 in his Kate Marshall series of crime thrillers. Kate is a former Met police detective now running a private detective agency in Devon with her former teaching assistant, Tristan. Background is provided for readers new to the series.

I combined reading with its unabridged audiobook edition, narrated by Jan Cramer.

June 2018. Kate Marshall swims every day in the sea but one morning she is pulled into a riptide current and nearly dies. After rescue she is rushed to the hospital. During her recovery he befriends Jean, an elderly lady on the same ward. She learns that eleven years previously Jean’s three-year-old grandson, Charlie, went missing during a camping trip on Dartmoor. Was he abducted? Or did Charlie fall into Devil's Way, a rushing river that vanishes into a a gorge close to where they were camping?

By the time Kate is well enough to go home, she has agreed to take on the case. Kate and Tristan look into the events of that fateful night and uncover that there may have been aspects of Jean’s past that could have put Charlie in jeopardy. The brutal murder of the family’s social worker not long after Charlie vanished is also of concern. Is this crime related? No further details to avoid spoilers.

With respect to the audiobook, given my vision problems, I am always pleased when I can do a combined read/listen. Jan Cramer is one of my favourite British narrators. While this is her first time reading one of the Kate Marshall novels, she has been the narrator for the audiobook editions of Robert Bryndza’s Detective Erika Foster series. Her voice is warm and clear and a pleasure to listen to.

Overall, I felt that ‘Devil’s Way’ had a strong plot and was a definite page-turner that was also rich in characterisation. This is a series that has become a must-read for me.

Highly recommended.

... which sometimes difficult to say about the heroine of his other series.

Marshall is a character who can be liked because she is trying to put her life back on track while struggling with a lifelong addiction that could affect it even more than it does now.

She is not central to all activities that lead to solutions but guides the story along in the background.

Intriguing set of circumstances even if there is a strong hint of a solution some way from the end. A brilliant comedic character with pomposity that abounds used to present the final guide to resolution is a gem.
