Wow…just…wow!

This was my first Clare Mackintosh novel, and it will not be my last. This felt like the mother of all whodunits, and I promise you that I will not give it away. Everyone loved Rhys Lloyd! Who would want to murder such a beloved star? But the more of the book you read, the more you wonder who wouldn’t want to murder him. Literally everyone is a suspect.

The story begins on New Year’s Day, in the village of Cwm Coed (pronounced Coom Coyd), the morning of the New Year’s Day swim when Rhys Lloyd’s body washes up in Llyn Drych (Mirror Lake). A famous singer who grew up in Cwm Coyd, Rhys and his investor Jonty, had invited residents of Cwm Coed to a New Year’s Eve party at their vacation resort The Shore.

There’s a lot of animosity between the not-so-wealthy residents of Cwm Coed and the wealthy owners of the vacation homes of The Shore. Rhys’s mother Glynis still lives in Cwm Coed, and the land used for The Shore had once been part of Wales and was left to Rhys by his father. The goal of the party was to show the people of Cwm Coed that residents of The Shore just want to be part of the village, one big happy family.

Or not.

A major component of this story is the conflict between the Welsh and the English. People speak Welsh to prevent the English from understanding. One of the residents from England tries to learn some Welsh phrases to fit in. And there are a number of annoyed references to mispronunciations of Welsh names.

I was glad I read it on a Kindle to translate some of the phrases from Welsh because the author didn’t always define them and context clues weren’t all that helpful at times. But what seemed like a bit of a distraction at first really helped demonstrate the animosity…and turned a “whodunit” into a “no really, whodunit?”

I loved the interactions between Ffion and Leo from the beginning. They demonstrate a ton of chemistry. Leo makes Ffion realize she doesn’t need to work alone (she calls herself The Lone Ranger), and Ffion makes Leo realize that he is capable of fighting back against his ex-wife. They are good investigators alone, but they are so much better together.

The story alternates time frames in Part One with the investigation (Ffion and Leo chapters) working forward from New Year’s Day and the character reveals (all the other residents) working backward from New Year’s Eve. When we get to Part Two and really start to learn what’s going on, the investigation still continues forward, but the character reveals go back to June when The Shore opened and work their way up to the party.

The buildup to the big reveal of who killed Rhys was incredibly satisfying, and I still gasped at the ending. You don’t want to miss this. This is a stand-alone, and I can’t wait to read how Ffion’s story continues.

4,0 su 5 stelle Promising start to a Welsh police series

Clare Mackintosh is such a versatile writer; she’s become an auto-buy author for me. From the heartbreaking After The End to the high stakes Hostage, she knows how to tell a story - and now she’s turned her hand to a police procedural series.

The Last Party is the first book featuring DC Ffion Morgan, and I’m glad it won’t be the last. Ffion is a fantastic character who is steely, sharp, funny and vulnerable all at once. Her sidekick in this book’s investigation, DC Leo Brady, is just as well drawn and is the perfect complement to Ffion.

The story begins with the discovery of the dead body of Rhys Lloyd, a failing opera singer, at his high end resort The Shore - which sits on the edge of a lake which transverses England and Wales. The setting was my favourite thing about this book - although fictional, it closely resembles a number of places in North Wales and was the perfect brooding backdrop for the mystery.

The cast of suspects was just the right size to provide sufficient suspense, red herrings and twists, although I did find a few of the characters quite similar. For a while I kept getting confused between two couples, which I think is mostly down to the nature of The Shore and its holiday home owners.

The reveal of what really happened to Rhys Lloyd and who was responsible is paced just right, with all loose ends tied up nicely in a satisfying conclusion. I never felt like the book dragged while I was reading it and I was hooked throughout, but when I got to the end I did think it was a long book for the story.

I wasn’t as wowed with this as with other Clare Mackintosh novels, but that’s only because she’s set the bar so high. Taken on its own merit it’s a very good book and a strong start to the DC Morgan series, which I look forward to reading more of.

This is the first novel of a new series by Clare Mackintosh. It was an enjoyable read but I did struggle to connect with it initially. At the beginning, the only character I felt compassion for was Leo but I did enjoy the relationship between him and Ffion. As it progressed we found out the background information on the other characters which enabled me to connect with the other characters and became much more enjoyable.

I can’t take anything away from the authors writing as it was very good, expertly plotted, by the end I realised great character development, however the sheer amount of characters and backwards timeline really took me out the story for the first half and had to keep checking back what day the current chapter was on and who I was reading about. I found the inclusion of Welsh hard to grasp too, I understand it was needed as the setting was Wales and Welsh isn’t the easiest to read and pronounce and I did find my mind wandered trying to pronounce them or checking previous info on the various characters. I can say this was only an issue I felt and most people will likely not see these an issue as I believe it’s more down to my attention span 😂

Once I hit the 50% mark the book took a turn and things began to make sense and the way the book is written really became clear.

I found the storyline to be quite a slow burn initially which is unusual for a crime police procedural novel but having finished it, it’s clear that as a first in a series it’s needed due to background information to lay down the rest of the following novels. I adored the setting, which was described beautifully and the fact there was a map at the front of the book. It came in handy as I referred back to it a few times.

4,0 su 5 stelle Good start but dragged a little

This is the first book in a new series by Clare Mackintosh, an author whose books I always enjoy. This was a good start to the series that introduces the characters and sets it up for further books. The main character Ffion Morgan is a colourful character with plenty of secrets and attitude which many of the best ones do.

It’s New Year’s Eve and Rhys Lloyd is hosting a party at his home on Mirror Lake. He has invited his new neighbours to his home to celebrate the New Year as well as showing off his wealth. This is no normal party though and by midnight Rhys will be found dead in the lake.

The following day DC Ffion Morgan is investigating the mysterious death and has a village full of suspects. It is only a small community so Ffion is very familiar with the suspects, many of whom are her family, friends and neighbours. It soon becomes obvious that Rhys Lloyd was not the most popular man in the community and many people hated him and held grudges. So its more a case of who had finally killed him.

I enjoyed the investigation partnership of DC Ffion Morgan and DC Leo Brady and hopefully will reappear together in future books in this series. Two very strong characters that I feel sure can be developed.

I thought the first half of the novel was very strong as the story and characters were laid out but for me the second half dragged a little otherwise I would have rated it even higher. Overall I would give it a 3.5 star rating rounded up to a 4.

5,0 su 5 stelle Great characters in an entertaining, twisty murder mystery

I didn't want to finish this novel because I loved the characters so much, yet I was reading faster and faster because of the twisted plot. The setting is a small town near the border of Wales and England where a new upscale housing development has disturbed the community's tranquility. The main character, Ffion, a local detective constable, has just had a wild New Year's Eve celebration where she met a man in a bar, had too much to drink, and went home with him. Early on New Year's Day, she creeps out of his apartment.
Ffion is called to work later in the morning because a man, Rys Lloyd, a famous singer, has been pulled from the lake in front of The Shore, a group of five vacation lodges built for the ultra-rich. She is assigned to work with a detective constable from England because The Shore is on the English side of the lake, and the police officials don't know who have the jurisdiction at this point. She walks in to meet her new partner, and he turns out to be the man she just had a one-night stand with. Since they have no choice, Ffion and Leo, her new partner on the case, try to put their awkwardness aside and get on with the investigation.
As it turns out, Leo has a very different working style from Ffion's. He is reserved and more inclined to follow procedure, whereas Ffion acts rashly but often has brilliant insights. They agree to pretend that their encounter never took place with varying degrees of success. They interview all the people around Rhys on New Year's Eve and learn to their dismay, that it was practically the whole town. Lloyd owned one of the lodges, and he and his business partner, who owned another lodge, hosted a party for The Shore and invited the local community.
Ffion and Leo find that virtually everyone has a motive to hurt Lloyd. He knew most of the people in the town as he grew up there before his singing career took off. Lloyd had managed to make many enemies because, appearances to the contrary, he was not a nice man. Lloyd had some bad habits involving money, drugs, and women. Ffion and Leo have the challenge of sifting through the suspects to find someone angry enough to kill him. For Ffion, this means being suspicious of some of those people close to her.
This story engaged me from the start. The author, Clare MacIntosh, does a masterful job of presenting her characters' points of view. For example, Ffion, having grown up swimming in the lake, views The Shore as a complete eyesore and intrusive to the natural beauty. On the other hand, Leo lives in a dismal rented apartment that is plain and bare. To him, the lodges are aspirational. Every character has well-delineated motivations, agendas, and fears. These come through in the writing and make it more compelling than many murder mysteries. Another reason I was glued to the book was the plot. The twists come fast. The only negative I could find is that at the end, perhaps there were one too many twists, but it was a riveting conclusion, nonetheless. Readers who enjoy Gillian Flynn and Ruth Ware will love this one.

5,0 su 5 stelle Perfect detective novel

This novel is set on a lake where the border of Wales and England runs through the middle. A bit too close in concept to the Scandi Noir series The Bridge. However the tension between the Welsh and English adds to the atmosphere of the book. Who dunnit? Everyone could have. I really enjoyed reading it, trying to solve it. It reminded me of PD James novels, where the chaos and crime requires intellect and honour to solve it. Ffion the Welsh Detective and Leo the English Detective being those qualities to the job. I liked the added intrigue off the close knit community and Ffion's personal involvement. Hope to read more about these characters.

I gave this police procedural/ thriller 4 Stars.

SUMMARY
“The Last Party,” by Clare Mackintosh, opens on New Years Day as a dead body is discovered in the lake in this small Welsh town on the boarder of England.

Around the same time, police detective, Ffion wakes up in the bed of the previous nights hook up. She is off to the scene of the crime but is unpleasantly surprised when she realizes that she has to share responsibility for the case with some English police officer.

It turns out the dead person is a local hero/ celebrity. He lives in a new development called “The Shore.” Most locals are not excited about this new neighborhood, it divides the town into the “haves” and “not haves.” There are many people who strongly oppose the development and have reason to be angry with the developers.

The book takes us through the reasons various suspects may want to kill the celebrity. In doing so, we learn about the days leading up to the body being found from several points of view and begin to see the potential motivations of several different characters.

WHAT I LOVED
This was a fast paced story that kept me guessing the entire time. I loved the setting, a lake and mountain town in Wales sounds amazing to me. I loved that there was a major dividing. Factor for the town, it added to the building tension.

WHAT I DIDN’T LOVE
I thought Ffion seemed a little hard to like, particularly in the beginning. I wasn’t crazy about her, but near the end, she grew on me a little bit,

OVERALL
A decent read if you’re looking for a thriller that will keep you reading until late in the night.

This novel keeps you guessing until the end. I enjoyed the whodunnit element but I mostly enjoyed the Welsh reference. North Wales is beautiful and with the author's excellent writing I could picture the area easily. Hyfryd.
