4,0 su 5 stelle A story of strong men and even stronger women!
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 29 dicembre 2022

This was, I thought, a straight forward murder mystery set in Roman Britannia. However it was far more than that, with stolen imperial silver, mutiny amongst the legions and a political power grab of the highest order. Rumours of a druid renaissance and tales of a possible rebellion by local tribes were added to the mix. This was a story of numerous strands, intricately woven together and topped off in a fitting conclusion.

I loved the whole thing, lots of twists and turns. Set at a time not particularly famous, yet with lots of interesting historical details. A rip roaring story!

3,0 su 5 stelle Chop off head first, ask questions later …

I bought this book because I am familiar with the geography and was interested to see how the author depicted it in Roman times. I’m not an expert on Roman Britain, but the author appears to have done her research and the settings feel solid. The characterization and dialogue less so.

So … after the initial head chopping, we quickly find out what a thoroughly messed-up character our Roman 00VII is, even by the standards of the time. Discede Mendip Hills morator, says M. By Jupiter, we think, it’s going to take an extraordinary plot and a pretty feisty British maiden to sort this guy out.

Cue maiden, who is the same maiden our hero had a fling with some years before at the other end of the country, quite a coincidence. Said maiden has since metamorphosed into a responsible leader, coincidentally embroiled in the very plot our hero is trying to thwart. There follows a lot of un-Romanly agonising. Given the alacrity with which our hero whips out his gladius to solve his professional issues, one begins to wish he would apply the same principle elsewhere. Worked last time.

The plot hops around both geography and genre. It feels like a mystery at first (murder, clues, flawed character) but it quickly becomes evident who dunnit and why. The plot then reverts to a 00VII caper (evil mastermind planning world domination, Big Fight Scene). There’s a danger of it turning into Lord of the Rings at one point, but it doesn’t, Ave Angerona. The romance thread runs through it, but it’s too cosy and predictable.

This is an undemanding book. The historical background is interesting but the plot has little to make the reader think. I did feel compelled to complete the book, primarily to find out if our hero finally gets his act together, so the author has done her job. I expected a twist at the end to usher in a sequel, but it all seems to end happily. Perhaps too happily?

This is a debut novel, so congratulations to the author on getting published. It isn’t really my kind of book, but doubtlessly many will like it. A more focussed plot and more stringent editing might usefully be applied to further books, in my opinion.

5,0 su 5 stelle A Roman Historical to lose yourself in
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 9 giugno 2021

If you are a lover of historical thrillers and you haven’t yet heard of Quintus Valerius then you should look out this new series by debut author, Jacquie Rogers. Set in Roman Britain in 224AD, Imperial Investigator Quintus Valerius is given, on behalf of the highest authorities in the land, the task of seeking out criminals and murderers who threaten the very existence of the country. With his assistant, Tiro, he faces constant danger, isolation, and the despair that comes when you don’t know you can trust in a world where everyone is under suspicion, even the Lady Julia, at one time closer to Quintus than anyone.

As the pace of the story increases, we have much to discover about our gallant soldiers as they delve deeper into the case they have been asked to investigate while also learning more about each other and how, despite their differences, they each have something to bring to the table. They grow before our eyes into people we want to succeed.

The Governor’s Man is very well researched and takes us into the heart of Roman Britain. It would be an excellent starting place for anyone wanting to discover more about this period in history. For those wanting to follow the story on a map, Rogers has included a list of place names with their modern-day name. Altogether The Governor’s Man is an excellent read - but be warned, you won’t want to put it down until the end! Looking forward to the next in the series.

5,0 su 5 stelle Pacey and exciting Roman adventure
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 4 gennaio 2022

A hugely enjoyable mystery story set in Roman Britain. Quintus Valerius is a compelling main character - dogged, duteous, and damaged by the past, he's tasked with a simple investigation that spirals out into a growing conspiracy. Paired off with the enjoyably blokey Tiro, it's a proper page turner that's told with real heart and a great sense of character.

5,0 su 5 stelle A new twist on detective stories

What an unexpected surprise -- a detective story set in Roman Britannia! I picked this title based on a friend's recommendation and I'm glad I did. The history and geography lessons aside (both of which I love, by the way), the story itself really sucked me in. The characters were well developed and the story was exciting and believable. Can't wait for the next installment!

5,0 su 5 stelle Immersive crime drama set in Roman Britain

A gripping, immersive crime drama, with Imperial Investigator Quintus Valerius, assisted by the low-born Londoner, Tiro, ordered to establish who is stealing the Emperor's silver. The historical detail is so real and the characters so vivid - I especially appreciated Jacquie Rogers's strong females, Aurelia, Britta and the Lady Julia - that the reader is transported effortlessly into the Roman Britain of 224AD. Heartily recommended.

5,0 su 5 stelle A gripping mystery which transports you into the world of Roman Britain

This was my first foray into Roman Britain historical fiction and the author quickly immersed me into this past world. I found the novel both informative and enjoyable. I particularly liked the characterisation of Tiro and Aurelia as real warmth and depth was brought to their personalities. Will they return for the next book in the series? I hope so!

Having studied a bit about the Romans in Britain and Germany during this period, I found the history excellent, the plot and characters compelling and the writing engaging. It's a fun read that will keep you guessing. Ms. Rogers clearly did her homework. Can't wait for the next book!
