Gosh, dang it! I'm a prolific reader and I don't normally leave reviews, but with this book I must make an exception. I had just finished a series of procedural police stories that were beautifully written. When I did a quick search for my next read, Amazon recommended this author.

I'm sure as this is a published author, folk like her work; however, I did not. I found the characters superficial and lacking substance. In fact, I tried to finish the book, but was so disappointed with the lack of character development, that I decided not to finish the book and leave a review warning others who might be of like mind.

If you like Tana French, this is not the book for you. if you like Ruth Ware, this is not the book for you. If you like Peter Robinson, this is not the book for you.

If you're looking for a mindless read on a beach holiday, you may like this book; however, if you're a fan of Nora Roberts, or Danielle Steele, this book ain't gonna cut it for you either.

I once read that there's no such thing as a bad book, but just a book that isn't quite right for you, the reader.

For me, the reader: ugh and double ugh. No background, no substance, no nada.

Just not up to the standard set by others

It seems all of my favorite authors are in between publication dates so in desperation, thought I'd read some new authors - or new to me. I did not find this book to be fast-paced or breathtaking, as the reviews stated. And readers of Kendra Elliot or Melinda Leigh will NOT enjoy this book. The writing was not at all that interesting. As a matter of fact, I found the writing to be rather dull. The characters had been drawn they would be stick people. While the part of the story regarding serial killer/kidnapper/brother could have been a captivating reveal, it wasn't. And there was absolutely no suspense in Alyssa's capture of said criminal, who went against character to simply show up at her house making it easy for her to capture him. This killer had been easily evading the authorities and then - after he has plotted on how he will kill her family in great horrific detail - decides to just show up at her house? No, this really isn't worth the time to read.

Much as I wanted to like this one, it didn't work for me. It seems to be well written, but I didn't find anything here to differ from the dozens of other procedurals I've read this year. Alyssa Wyatt is a carbon copy of every other female law enforcement protagonist out there. She's the usual headstrong firecracker type, partnered up with a laid back male counterpart who is the voice of reason in the duo. Multiple hints are dropped throughout about some dark childhood trauma she went through that I have no doubt would have ended up being directly related to the villainous killer of the piece. Can't say for sure because I'll admit I didn't finish this.

With my Kindle's enormous backlog of unread novels, I have a self imposed rule that if a story doesn't get my interest by 20% in, I bail on it. I think that's more then a reasonable shot for an author to rope me in, but it just didn't happen here.

Alyssa Wyatt, so stuck on herself, so bossy and in your face, thinks about right & wrong options but just does what she wants. Very disrespectful to her partner, who is such an enabler for her poor behavior. I am surprised anyone at the precinct would work with her.

The author spent far too much time using clichés and has no concept of what a real police officer (detective or otherwise) behaves. The premise of the story was good but lost me with the continuous use of phrases meant to express emotions/feelings many of which lent nothing to the story. The suggestion that a police captain would behave like some distant dictator and officers would fear updating them is demeaning and incredulous. The writing style is basic with an over reliance on feelings (usually misplaced or cliché).

Why the great reviews? Was I reading the same book? Too much dialog not necessary. Found it boring . Didn't like the writing st g le at all. Sorry. Won't be reading another book by this author.
