This is the first book I’ve read from this author and I loved it. I’ve read about the Battles of Stamford Bridge and Hastings many times before but never in so much detail as in Thurkill’s Revenge. The descriptions were so vivid I felt like I was there too and I was interested to read that the reason the Saxons lost the Battle of Hastings wasn’t just down to battle fatigue and the long journey they had to make from one battle to the other. I ended up thinking the Saxons could have won and I was sorry that they didn’t. You can’t help routing for the Saxons and Thurkill in particular, all the characters were well-described and brought to life. I’ve got the next book in the series all ready to read and I’m looking forward to following more of Thurkill’s adventures. Maps and battle formations would have been useful, but they were easy enough to find by Googling. Highly recommended for any fans of the times of the Norman Conquest.

One heck of a story, and based on historical events to boot - I actually learned a lot, but that was secondary to the sheer enjoyment of a good tale, well told! Taking us through the famous tumult of 1066, Thurkill's Revenge has liberal helpings of action, wit, romance, tension, and bawdy laddishness. The characters are believable and likeable. Suspense builds gradually from start to finish. The writing style makes the book an absolute page-turner: I found myself looking forward to my allotted reading time each day, which is always a nice place to be! This is one of those books where, reaching the end, you're delighted that there's a sequel to go straight on to - which I will be doing asap.

Excellent historical fiction set in Anglo-Saxon England in 1066. Great action and clearly very well researched historical detail. It's a fantastic book and I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Paul Bernardi’s first novel, To The Devil His Due, I rushed to buy Thurkills Revenge immediately it was published. To my frustration life has prevented me from reading it until now. I started reading it a couple of days ago and have not been able to put it down during my spare waking hours. It is a cracking read. The characters jump out at you and the story telling is infectious. I found myself reading at pace and seeing pictures that the author created with his writing. The author clearly knows his history and his research is faultless. But to see it in such graphic and accurate detail through the eyes of a fictional character and our flawed hero, Thurkill, is a master stroke of penmanship. However reading it does comes with a health warning. You will be late for work, bump into furniture, miss the odd meal and go to bed too late. You will not want to take your eyes off the page as you strive to read “just one more chapter”. Overcome with sadness when I turned the last page. Come on Bernardi part 2 of this thrilling trilogy please. Let’s get at those damned Normans.

The events of 1066 dominate most of this book. The fictional hero Thirkill is well characterised and believable. The plot is straightforward but you soon become invested in the struggles of Thirkill and his companions.

Having thoroughly enjoyed Paul Bernadi’s first book, To The Devil His Due, I was looking forward to the next one. I must admit that the Saxon era would not have been my first choice but I could not put it down.
Once again Bernadi gets you 100% behind the principal character from the early pages which draws you in to follow his exploits. The build up to the battles is detailed and grows in intensity as the lines are drawn but Bernadi manages to put you in there and feel the fear. The battles are nothing short of savage but that is acceptable savagery of the time driven by pride and honour- kill or be killed for the cause and Bernadi captures it so well.
The twists and turns are woven through the tale with some shocks you just do not see coming and once again you cannot anticipate the outcome, I was absorbed.
Great story, very well written and will there be a second volume??

For his second historical novel, Paul Bernardi has chosen the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings and the ultimate defeat and death of King Harold (no spoilers here, I think we all knew the outcome), as seen through the eyes of a young Saxon huscarl, the eponymous Thurkill. Bernardi really knows his subject and the book is full of small historical details that bring the events to life but at no point does it feel like the reader is being lectured to, as the information is cleverly woven into the narrative. The battle scenes are brutal and vividly described, however, for me the book really comes to life once the battle is over and Thurkill begins his journey home. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end and eagerly await the next chapter in the adventures of Thurkill

After his fantastic first novel, To the Devil His Due, the question had to be “How would Paul Bernardi top that?”. Well the answer is, he has.

Thurkill’s Revenge is a fast-paced high adrenaline story focusing on a young man’s journey from innocence to war, the elation of success along with the lows of defeat on the battlefield, personal loss and ultimately leading to revenge.

The author masterfully tells the story and with his background, a Master’s degree in Anglo-Saxon studies and a meticulous attention to detail. Historical events are brought to life, allowing the characters to be woven into history seamlessly, making this a book that you just don’t want to put down.
