I like authors who when they write their stories manage to do it in such a detailed way that it is easy for me to mentally picture what I read. In this novel, from the very first pages I saw myself catapulted into a film, the kind that have always kept me glued to the screen without ever diverting my attention. It's the same effect that this story had on me. Lots of action, many well-described characters, adrenaline-pumping situations, a dose of mystery with very interesting historical references. Accurate and fluid writing.

Good fast paced crime thriller - ideal for holiday read. Good moral challenge about how far you might go for your Family whilst also questioning whether perhaps you can become too entwined with Family for your own good?

I did enjoy this book - well I wanted to see how it ended so I read it all. The problem I have with it is that the story was so full of implausible situations, as well as the three main characters, the siblings, being obsessed with each other in such an unnatural way, and not likeable personalities. So if you have read this book, you may be wondering, as I am, how...
SPOILER ALERT (some rhetorical questions): a) Frannie could have had a baby that neither of the two siblings had a clue about who the father was when they were so close; b) if the baby was conceived in Verona - where they always went on holiday together - wouldn't they have known something about him? And at what point did they exchange email addresses? c) Why did Frannie lie constantly to her siblings about more or less everything, d) as vets, would they not have realised that Will couldn't have been killed with 'so much blood' by just one glancing blow from a car on a track; e) Why was Will walking to her house at midnight - when she was driving out for more wine? f) Why did she even tell a 'holiday-one-night-stand' about the baby? g) What possible claim could he have had on the baby in the circumstances - was Frannie that stupid? h), Why, when the siblings lived next door to each other (weird), would they then have a big discussion/argument about their situation at work, with staff still there? i) Why so many references to Rosie - as if she was somehow the excuse for all of their behaviours. j) What did Jason 'know'? Was he supposed to have known that Frannie was the murderer, and if so, how, as we assume that Cathy must have fed him a pack of lies. And so many more unanswered questions. I'm not convinced that all the 5 star reviews on here are genuine as they all seem to just say how brilliant the book was, with no description of the actual story, except the 'love of three siblings'. Not really a thriller and hard to recommend - although it wasn't all bad and I did finish it.

A really twisting, turning story of siblings who cover up a murder. The backwards and forwards of the story, along with the individual chapters for each person was clever. I thought it would cause confusion but in fact it helped to keep the tension going.

Not quite as good as Wrong Time, Wrong Place but still thoroughly engaging and enjoyable.

The synopsis sums up the basis of the storyline. It’s a good book, which keeps the brain cells in action throughout.
Told in the then and now format, the plot revolves around a number of lies which culminate in one of the characters appearing in court. McAllister gives a for real jaw dropping revelation in one of the court scenes. (She also provides the reader with another towards the end)
The three main characters are- Joe, Cathy and Frannie, siblings who between them run a vet practice. They are on holiday in the family villa at Verona when Frannie runs over a man whilst driving her car. As per synopsis, the man is dead and this sets off a ‘domino’ effect of bad decisions and repercussions for all family members. All sorts of stuff is revealed- lies as to the actual truth in the main.
It’s fiction so some of the ideas are implausible but do fit in with the whole plot. Well written and far better than many books I’ve read recently, I recommend this.

I found this book very readable, but right from the start it was unbelievable. And none of the characters were likeable. If my brother had supposedly killed someone by accidentally running them over the last thing I'd do would be to help him bury the body! Certainly I'd support him, and try to help but not to the extent of committing a crime.
Frannie is one of the most irritating characters I have encountered. Silly, spoilt baby. Joe's feelings for her border on the incestuous, no wonder Lydia feels the way she does, she is well away from that family. Cathy is downright odd. Could someone really have qualified as a vet, and be dealing with sick animals and their distraught owners and yet be so detached from life? Evan is just a vile person.
Apart from that it did make a very absorbing read and there was a lot of 'atmosphere' in the way things slowly went from bad to worse. I'd have given it another star had the characters not been so unpleasant.

Agree with others who have said they found some of the dialogue confusing. I read and re-read a few of the conversations and still couldn’t work out what the characters were saying. I also thought they were described as being ‘fair’ at the start and I definitely read one of them had caramel coloured hair and by the end they were all ‘dark haired’. Not a major issue but there were a few inconsistencies like that. The worst was one saying ‘it was cold for august and you could see their breath in the night air’ and literally on the next page it described the ‘soupy and humid summer air’ in the same scene!
That being said, I enjoyed reading it and wanted to see how the situation would turn out although I really hated Frannie!

I must say I started this book months ago and even though I felt it was good,it didn't grip me from the start like I'd hoped,which meant ,it seemed very long winded and took me so long to get into it but saying that when I got covid myself and had lots of time on my own to read I was so glad I decided to give it another go. And I have to say I was then drawn into the story of all the characters and the love they all had for each other and the unfortunate experiences they had to endure. Such a brilliant storyline and terrific ending.
