Overrated YA fantasy

I’m quite disappointed with Legendborn and almost feel I haven’t read the same book as everyone else.

As this is a book difficult to describe as I feel I could easily spoil the story, and I do think it is better to read it with the minimum knowledge as possible.

What I liked about the book:
- extensive inclusion of serious and important issues like racism, colonialism, gender and grief.
- diverse set of characters
- buffy the vampire slayer vibes

What I think it could have been done better:
- there was a LOT of info dump. Fantasy is a tricky genre to write as you need to find the write balance between action and worldbuilding, and find interesting ways to do it. This author opted for the easy way and we have several characters teaching us the messy system, which Bree understands perfectly and immediately.
- Bree is the ultimate Mary Sue, she is absolutely remarkable and I can’t remember the last time I’ve read about someone as special as her.
- as a classic YA we have a love triangle (I’m definitely too old for this). As it is easy to guess, we have the blond and nice guy Vs the dark brooding one.. I wonder who will she choose 🙄

What I hated about the book:
- this is the typical story where everything happens in U.S and they are the only ones able to save the world (or maybe just the country? I couldn’t understand)
- how could EVERY descendent from Arthur’s legend be in the US? Europe is a very nice place, I bet at least some of them would like to live here.

Poor character development

We read this book for mother-daughter book group and my daughter agrees with me on my assessment of the book. The story doesn't get going or interesting until literally the half way point. Then the magic really starts. That's a long time to wait to be hooked.

It was a LONG 500 pages to get through. Setting-16 year old kids going to an early college program. Wow, that's a bad idea. I'm not sure why a college was even selected as they never went to class. I wondered if she was going to flunk out for lack of attendance! There is some description of the campus, but it mostly focused on the place that the magic society people hung out. There was plenty of drinking and she used a fake ID to go to a bar. She was way to comfortable in these settings to be believable. Plus, this isn't a 20 year old using a fake ID, she was 16!

Her friend Alice seemed like an absent character. She was only in the story a few times and didn't seem shocked at all about Bree's absence or the eventual introduction into the magic world. She ended up being more of a distraction.

Bree was pretty much an angry girl for the whole book. I was so disappointment when she wasn't struck with awe and wonder that she possessed magical powers. There just wasn't enough emotion written to make me feel any emotion from her with her discovery. I wanted to feel it so bad too! She was mean and hurtful to many people in her life with the biggies being Alice, Nick, and Patricia. When she apologies everyone immediately accepts her apology, gives her a hug, and they all move on. She faced zero consequences for being nasty to them. It's these moments when the M/C evolves. I'm sad that never happened.

There are important and pertinent cultural issues brought up. None of the LGBTQ things were "in your face" and that was refreshing. It was simply a part of life and accepted. I thought that was handled brilliantly! The racial issues were more about past pains, rather then redemption. At the end when all of the "servants" on a college campus were black just felt to far of a stretch.

Worst part, it ends on a cliff hanger. There is virtually zero closure with her friends and one is still missing.

I wasn't invested in any character except Sel and William. They had the best development and were actually interesting.

If this had not been for a book group, I would have stopped reading after the first couple chapters. I do not recommend it.

A different fantasy than what I normally read. Complex and detailed which made me fumble a bit and took some time to actually get into the book!

Bree is grieving her mother’s death. She just wants to be left alone and hence going to a residential program at UNC-Chapel Hill seems like a perfect solution until she witnesses a magical attack on the campus. And when a Merlin tries to wipe her memories, he not only fails but somehow awakens her dormant powers. Bree soon realizes that there is more to her mother’s death than a road accident and hence she along with Nick - a member of legendborn gets together to decode the mystery. In her quest to solve the mystery, She comes to know that Legendborns are truly descendants of King Arthur and a magical war is coming.

My issue was world-building. It was detailed and complicated and it took some time to understand the magical world of legendborns and let me tell you I am still not sure if I got it right. There was too much information in the book which did not make much sense to me and hence I felt my mind wandering while reading the book.

I loved how Bree’s character was portrayed in the book. I could feel her, empathize with her and was frustrated along with her. The way she struggled in accepting her mother’s loss was painful to read and it broke my heart. I also loved the way Tracy speaks about racism in the book and she has done a great job blending it into the storyline.

Intriguing, fascinating albeit a bit complex read.

I bought this book based on a glowing recommendation but in hindsight I wouldn’t have spent the $. I love this genre, but this definitely was not a stand out, well written, unique storyline for me. It felt like a regurgitated mashup of previously (and better) written books and although it has some entertainment value, it left me feeling disappointed that I had wasted my money.

Picked this up on a 99p sale, and it had some great ideas. There aren’t many books that consider Arthurian legends well, let alone Young Adult books! It’s maybe not such a great book for anything over that cost though, based on how it’s written, but could be a great kindle unlimited book should they add it.
