3,0 su 5 stelle Started well, but disappointing

I'm a sucker for "boyfriend/girlfriend from hell" thrillers, but this one didn't quite do it for me.

Several of the negative reviews criticise this book because the main character (Hannah) didn't get the heck out of Dodge after it became obvious that there was something iffy about her new boyfriend, Alex. I think that's unfair, firstly because in real life there are people who stay in abusive or controlling relationships, and secondly because if she'd dumped him right away there wouldn't have been a story. The problem I had with First Date was that after a promising start, the story becomes repetitive. Alex says or does something that's a little bit fishy, so Hannah considers leaving him but decides not to after a long internal debate. Rinse and repeat until the last few chapters. There is no mounting sense of danger despite the oft-mentioned threat from a third party, and it's predictable how that will turn out. The ending is a damp squib, redeemed to some extent by a final turnaround which I didn't see coming.

The writing is clunky in places. I am not the Chief Constable of the Grammar Police, and I don't believe in following rules just for the sake of it, but there is a reason why there are accepted conventions regarding the use of commas to join sentences together. It's to avoid this sort of thing:

"I gaze out of the window, the scenery is peppered with snow, but becoming more rugged." (page 286)

That sentence looks as if it wants to fall apart like a piece of cheap self-assembly furniture. Yes, it makes sense but it's unwieldy and doesn't flow, which reminds you that you're reading a story and takes you away from the action. There are quite a few similar awkward constructions throughout the book where a full stop, semicolon or conjunction would have been preferable to a comma. Call me pedantic if you like, and I'm sure my grammar isn't perfect either, but amateurish writing like this does spoil a book for me.

This book isn't awful, therefore two and a half stars which I can't give so I'll be generous and round up to three. I ordered two more Sue Watson books along with First Date, and I'm hoping they are better than this.

3,0 su 5 stelle Lightweight read with promising storylines, but not always well -executed

I like psychological thrillers, I'm a woman over 30, and I'm interested in the world of internet dating, so I suppose I am the target market for this novel.

I did like it and I read it within a matter of a few days. In my opinion, it was an easy, lightweight read (despite the subject matter). However, there were some aspects I found irritating or that detracted from my overall enjoyment. Before I started reading it, I'd mentioned it to a friend who I share books with, and offered to lend it to her - now I'm going to warn her she may find it a bit silly or annoying!

So, to get down to the specifics.. first impressions: for some reason when I first opened the Amazon package, I thought it was a 'self-published' novel. I don't think that now when I look at it though, but it was something about the font or the cover. However, when I started reading it, I also thought it was a self-published book and that the author wasn't an experienced writer (I now realise Sue Watson is well-known and has published a number of novels!). The writing was slightly awkward in places and not very well expressed. I remember reading a reference to someone going into a 'dress shop' that just seemed really clunky and old-fashioned because in this day and age there's no such thing as a 'dress shop'! Also, as other reviewers have mentioned, Alex isn't a 'lawyer', he's a 'solicitor' (perhaps the author has American readers in mind), and wouldn't spend his days in court!

Other than the writing style, the main thing that frustrated me was Hannah, and I found her profession as a social worker implausible given her lack of emotional intelligence and how she very easily overrode common sense /evidence because she so desperately wanted her boyfriend to be the perfect person of her romantic fantasies. I was slightly shocked by how easily she was prepared to believe the worst of her best female friend, Jas, e.g. that she would have spiked her drinks on the night out. Of course, love is blind etc. and the novel did highlight that well.

The best, most well-written parts of the novel start from chapter 36 onwards, and especially chapter 40 and the epilogue. There is a really great twist in the story, and it was well -executed. When I thought back to whether there had been any clues I couldn't really think of any apart from I did have a moment of doubt about why it was Harry survived/was un-injured in the confrontation with Alex at the end. I was surprised/sceptical that this young 'kid' in his 20s had managed to talk Alex out of doing something stupid or dangerous.

So, overall, it was good read, a bit of escapism, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it.

3,0 su 5 stelle Not bad but spoilt by a ridiculous ending

I sort of enjoyed this. It's easy reading and kept my attention although the main character, Hannah, really isn't credible. She's far too gullible, rather dim and just not a credible social worker. But still, I kept reading until almost the end. That's when I think it all falls apart. The sudden twist and the epilogue are just so ridiculous as to be laughable. In fact I think it spoils the whole book. Too silly.

3,0 su 5 stelle Predictable!!

Although the ending was good the main story was just too predictable. It was getting on my nerves that Hannah, who held a very responsible job, kept making excuses for Alex and his controlling behavior. I skipped a lot of it but read the last few chapters and was glad when it was finished. Not gripping enough for me

3,0 su 5 stelle Ok but not brilliant

I fell for the hype, as I love a good psychological thriller, but jaw-dropping it certainly isn't! I couldn't really engage or sympathise with the main character, my feelings were mainly frustration and bafflement at her stupidity, so I just stopped caring. I kept on reading waiting for the twists and turns that would get me hooked, but they never came. I did read it through to the end but this is not a book a would recommend.

3,0 su 5 stelle Good but not quite good enough.

The premise of the book is good and I did enjoy it but the story was just lacking something. I think all the back abs forth with Alex just went on a bit too long and then the ending was very rushed and felt like the author was telling instead of showing. I did like the twists throughout the story - it definitely kept you guessing!!

3,0 su 5 stelle Easy read, suitable before bed, shocking end

I found this book a very easy read but personally for me I would have liked a bit more twists and turns throughout, it began to felt a little drawn out in parts but glad I stuck it through because the end was very unexpected. Suitable if you’re wanting a light thriller you can read before bed!

3,0 su 5 stelle Disappointing. Not up to the usual gripping standard, that Carol Marsh writes.

Carol Marsh is one of my favourite writers, I have read most of her books, and they are brilliant. However this particular book I thought was frustrating, I found myself frustrated with social worker Hannah as she made so many annoying mistakes. Following her heart instead of using her head.

Whilst I enjoyed the book I felt the main character was just too gullible , how come she didn’t google the boyfriend ?

i must say, going into this book i had high expectations and by the end i was a little disapointed that nothing had really hapened. It was just a simple plot of girl meets guy. Girl's friends know he is not the one. Guy turns out to be a creep so girl's work friend piches guy of a ledge. Other than the plot i enjoyed this book a lot. it is writen well and has believable charactors. thanks for reading!
