I own all the River Cottage HFW cookbooks (and quite a few others!). This book is part manifesto for a more sensible approach to food and part recipe book, the first 200ish pages are dedicated to his 7 'steps' to eating well which are:
1. Go Whole
2. Go Varied
3. Go with your Gut
4. Reduce Refined Carbs
5. Factor in Fat
6. Think about your Drink
7. Eat (and don't Eat) Mindfully (this is the most useful section that you don't see so often in other healthy eating books)
All of these I can go for, they aren't anything radical or new but good, common-sense approaches to eating well. He isn't maniacal about his approach and he suggests that any change is better than no change. Interestingly when he is discussing drink it is 'sugar-sweetened beverages' he starts with before alcohol.
There is also a handy summary at the end of each section to remind you of the salient points.
The recipes are very, very healthy. Think Hemsley and Hemsley over The Hairy Dieters or Pinch of Nom. This definitely falls into the health food category for me rather than healthier ways of eating our favourites. There are recipes for kombucha, kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut as one might expect.

Chapters are as follows:
The breakfasts mostly consist of fruit and nuts with a dollop of kefir or yogurt in for good measure. The breakfast chapter is one I like more than I usually do in this type of book, they heavily rely on fresh fruit and nuts with a bit of yogurt/kefir thrown in. Happily for me there isn't a chia recipe in sight, highly unusual for a book like this!
Quick lunchboxes feature pulses, raw veg and nuts.
Satisfying salads are pretty self explanatory - potato, bean and smoked mackerel; red cabbage, carrot and clementine; brassica, lentil and live (not a typo!)
Sustaining Soups is also nothing revolutionary but these recipes appeal to me more than the salads above. Think tomato and bean soup, yellow split pea, cullen skink, mushroom and artichoke to name a few.
Vital Veg mains - nutty, beany, beetroot curry; double dhal; asian hot pot
Fiesty Fish - baked fish and veg parcels; fish with fennel, tomatoes and chickpeas, mackerel on roasted veg and fruit
(Less is) More Meat - Duck and braised red cabbage; spicy chicken livers and lentils; baked chicken and veg curry
Treats and Drinks - seedy almond cake; rye and banana cookies; fruity granitas; Kombucha sunrise

All in all, I was close to sending this back, I don't know how many of the recipes appeal to me and if I want to eat more healthily I will more likely turn to some of my other books. I'm not ready to be this radical yet. I have decided to keep it though, partly because I like the breakfasts and when I want to eat healthily I find breakfast the hardest meal to get right. I am hoping that returning to the manifesto that makes up the first half of the book will keep me on the right track and I am likely to return to this more frequently than the recipes. I am probably a bit disappointed to have spent so much on it, it is the kind of book I would have picked up at a bargain bookshop for a fraction of the asking price but there we go, I have it now and I will keep it.

As a final aside, I've spotted an error even at a quick glance (apparently Hugh likes a dacaff coffee), these errors really annoy me as they seem to be increasingly common and stink of lazy proofing but this is not unique to this book.

If you had to write down what 'heathy eating' is, I bet most people could come up with a very good outline. Eat wholefoods, avoid processed foods, eat plenty of fruit and veg, avoid alcohol...
This book is 415 pages long; the first 211 are basically a rehash of current thinking about what constitutes healthy eating. I cannot imagine anyone bothering to read that many pages about dietary and lifestyle advice.
The recipes start on page 212 and some of them look quite interesting but personally I think Hugh's 'Veg every day' is more inventive and appealing.
So - I'm afraid this is a thumbs down from me. Too much text devoted to advice which most people who are likely to buy this book already know, and recipes which are, for me, only mildy appealing.
Disappointing.

I wanted more recipes. The first half of the book is just re-hashing what is already well known to anyone interested in cooking and in their health. Processed food is bad for us.....really. Reduce sugar intake...really. Hugh implies fermenting is simple - it is not quite as straight forward. Hugh advises adding fruit to your kefir - yes a green banana perhaps but sweet fruit will counterbalance any beneficial effects from the kefir. If you are interested in gut health I would recommend the website, ‘Chuckling Goat’. Some nice recipes - looking forward to trying them out. Hugh - please credit your fans with more food and health knowledge for next time. I bought a copy for myself and as a surprise, sent a copy to a friend. I’m a little embarrassed as it is soo preachy and I am worried she now thinks that I think she needs guidance on her health!!

I was impressed with Hugh's " Britains Fat Fight" on the TV. In particular his "real people in the real world" approach to tackling the problem so many of us face as we approach retirement - leaving your BMI behind and sliding into pre diabetic blood sugar levels. This is a very well put together book following on in that vein. I don't doubt this will be a No 1 best seller. At only £11.83 on Kindle it is well worth a punt. In fact it is probably preferable in that format, because of the many highlighted links. I shall be reading this often over a coffee (without a carb).

I've got a huge number of Hugh's books but this one didn't quite hit the spot. For a book that claims to be avoiding fads and fashions it has a lot of recommendations about everything from veganism to intermittent fasting. A lot of the recipes are very stripped back which makes them less appealing for those catering to the whole family or those omnivores who simply want more veg in their diets - for example, a plate of red berries and almonds just wouldn't cut it as a family breakfast in my house. I wanted to like a lot of what I saw but may end up reading more than I ever cook from this book. I found the River Cottage Veg Everyday, Much More Veg, Fruit, and Light and Easy to all have more to offer.

This is exactly the right book to start 2021 positively. This is not a time for self deprivation, no matter how important we know it is to attain a healthy weight. This sensible, well researched and inspirational book encourages us to enjoy healthy eating habits and relish the many delicious whole foods available to us. The author offers a holistic and positive approach to eating well. The advice is clearly presented and attainable. The recipes are varied and tasty. This is very much a book about encouraging us to embrace how good healthy food can be, rather than focusing on what we need to give up. I have been lucky enough to review it on NetGalley, but have also treated myself to a hardback copy. A beautiful and hopeful book.

I wasn't expecting such a comprehensive round up of thoughts and ideas from Hugh. So that was a pleasant surprise. He's put a lot of research and experience into this book. As an over 60 who is trying to live well and stay strong I find this book great for summarising a good healthy diet. Recipes look good looking forward to try first one today.

I found this book to be a little lost. I am buying this book as I am interested in eating better, so I am primarily interested in the reciepe section of the book (I cannot speak for others).
The book, as others state has 221 pages of nutritional info before we get to the reciepes. Now the nutrition is really important, however, it is not the reason I bought the book. You expect a little of course, but 200+ pages is too much. The book claims to be accessible, but it is not - this is too much waffle and too much frankly - "I do this and so should you".
Onto the reciepes - theyre fine, but not enough, about 100.
If you are looking for more of easy healthy reciepes, I think there are better alternatives, like Jamie Olivers everyday super foods

This heavy book arrived securely packaged and in perfect condition.

Hugh, you can do better than this.
I am disappointed - I miss being able to look through books in person before buying, and certainly wouldn't have bought this if I had picked it up in a book shop.
A huge chunk of the book is devoted to healthy eating in general, with Hugh doing various comedy poses and talking about gut health and various eating programmes.
If I wanted to read about a particular programme such as FODMAP I would, and have done, buy a book devoted to it.
This touches on several things but without anything in depth.
Basically the whole first half can be found online with a bit of dedicated searching.
Plus without the annoying poses.

The recipes! Hurrah! The first one.....
Sliced apple.
Noooo, don't go down this route Hugh! Stop it.
Sit in the corner and think about what you have done and how it affects other people.

I tried to return it but postage was half the cost of the book.

Like others I found this a bit of a preechy rehash of lots of healthy info I’ve already read or researched. If you’re starting completely from scratch on your health journey then this is a useful book. The recipes are ok, all a bit ‘sloppy’ in texture for my taste.

The cover claim there are over 100 recipes, but the 91 we counted (we assumed they made 100+ by including the variations?) recipes are broken down as follows;
Breakfasts 16 ( plus 10 additional variations, one of which is ‘don’t add the banana’)
Lunches 24 (nearly all dips or salads)
Salads 8
Soups 9
Veggie mains 11
Fish mains 6 (mostly grilled fish with a salad!)
Meat mains 8
Cake 1
Treats 5
Drinks 3

Hughs writing style is chatty and readable. Following this philosophy has enable him to lose 22lbs (10kg) and keep it off, maintaining a BMI of 24 for 3 years. So it clearly works. I understand that his healthy eating philosophy is not to count calories, but the lack of main meal recipes and lack of nutritional info on the recipes means this book will be consigned to the charity bag I suspect.

We much prefer the river cottage series of books.
