2,0 su 5 stelle Okay characters, but ultimately a weak plot

This book has a couple major mysteries plus many puzzles.

Mystery #1: Why did a billionaire (Tobias Hawthorne) leave nearly all of his estate to a teenage girl (Avery Grambs) -- given that the two have no apparent tie to each other?

But wait. The inheritance has a catch. In order to collect that inheritance, Avery first has to live in the Hawthorne mansion for the following year. And she will not live there alone. The other potential heirs, many of whom are none too pleased to have been left out from the bulk of the estate, will also be living there too.

So, Mystery #2: Is it safe for Avery to stay in the mansion? And what has happened to other people who have gotten close to the Hawthornes?

An array of puzzles block the solution to these mysteries. Some puzzles require logic. Others, a leap of imagination or a “Eureka” moment. Still others, manipulating hidden levers or switches to open a secret drawer or a hidden passageway.

Regardless of all that, it’s the characters and their interactions that move the story forward -- and that make you care for (or mistrust) those characters. One good point: The author was careful to give each of the four grandsons a different personality so the reader never confused one for the other. But with Avery due to inherit that which the grandsons had originally anticipated inheriting themselves, the interrelationships between Avery and any of the grandsons typically were more focused on solving puzzles and mysteries than on each other.

Bottom line: A quick, easy read. Fairly interesting characters. An interesting mystery – but one that unfortunately defied having a sensible solution. So a rushed and highly improbably ending.

My opinion on this book is definitely in the minority.

Avery Grambs gets summoned to the reading of a will that belongs to a dead multi-billionaire that she's never met. At the reading, Avery finds out, along with the deceased's daughters, grandsons etc. that with the exception of a very small consolation for each family member, all the $ was left to Avery.

Dream come true right? Except for the stipulation that Avery has to live in *her* mansion for a full year, with the family members that are fuming at her, people trying to kill her and a life- sized puzzle/ game created by the deceased himself.

Now- here's where what seems like the promise of a good book, goes wrong. First, all 4 Hawthorne brothers are handsome, intelligent and... SINGLE! Ta-da! Not only that, but two of them are heart-broken over an ex (who of course was wild and beautiful, and always got what she wanted) that they willingly simultaneously dated (what!? ewwww) who, drum roll please...tragically passed away. Enter Avery who is smart and grown for her age. She almost instantly ends up with multiple crushes which apparently are reciprocated to various degrees.

Then there's the game that they're supposed to play based on clues and riddles which should have been the main focus but seemed underwhelming and a little on the boring side.

2,0 su 5 stelle Disappointing

Ever since I heard this book was supposed to be like Knives Out, I was super interested, since that's one of my favorite movies of all time for its brilliant plotting, complex characters, sympathetic protagonist, and brilliant satire about class stratification in the U.S. Obviously with a comparison like that, a book has huge boots to fill and sadly, I'm not sure THE INHERITANCE GAMES can really hack it. If anything, it's more like a modern, reverse-harem version of THE WESTING GAME, but since that book is older (from the 1970s) and more obscure, I guess such a comparison won't sell as many copies.

Avery is a poor teenager who lives with her older sister who is constantly in this off again, on again thing with an abusive boyfriend. One day, she finds out she's become the heiress to one of the nine biggest fortunes in the world-- even though she's pretty sure she has no relation to the eccentric billionaire. So why her? That's what everyone else in the family would like to know, too.

I really forced myself to keep reading because I thought the beginning was really interesting, but I quickly began to get bored, as you can see from my status updates. The romance felt forced and I wasn't as amazed by the "puzzles" as my friends seem to be, and I thought the "twist" at the end was hugely anticlimactic and disappointing. I really don't care about any of these characters and I don't think I'll be reading the sequel. Younger readers will probably enjoy this but I couldn't suspend my disbelief.

2,0 su 5 stelle Basically a Prologue to Book 2

This book was okay. It had some good elements, such as a strong female heroine, loveable brothers, a good rags-to-riches theme, and some good mischief. However, where it fell short in my opinion was the actual "game" itself, especially once it was solved in the end. It just seemed SO unnecessarily tedious for a mediocre outcome. I almost didn't read the 2nd book because of how disappointed I was in this one, BUT I did, and I'm so glad that I did because it redeemed the series for me. So, with that being said, I look at this book as a super long-winded prologue to the second book, because THAT book answers so many questions that this one doesn't (which is basically all of the questions).

2,0 su 5 stelle it's an average book ( a bit of spoiler)

this book isn't great but its not awful either. they were cringey scene which made me want to scream in a pillow and there were scenes where I was rooting for the main character.

would i recommend this book to a friend?
Absolutely not.
this book focuses too much on Jameson's and Grayson's history and love triangles.
when I saw this book I thought Avery would be an assertive and badass character. i was wrong.
she's presented as vulnerable and always needs protection. I don't blame her since she just inherited fortunes but she's always relying on the Hawthorne's for help which is just absurd. she's too dependent on them and I hate that.

The book is also slow-paced. I just finished the first book and they haven't even figured out why the old man left the will to them. towards the end of the book, they move onto another mystery when they haven't even figured out the first one yet.

Bought due to the hype, but didn't like the writing style and got bored halfway through. I rarely stop reading a book but was really not enjoying it so gave up. Didn't fancy getting the the end finally and knowing I'd have to read the follow up books to wrap things up. Not worth the hype.

I guessed the final twist of this book in the first chapter. An author does not introduce characters and forget about them if they had no significance. Besides, the ex-girlfriend drama was simply not my cup of tea.

Too fast pace with very little details. No character building, no relationship building. I don’t know it just wasn’t for me.

2,0 su 5 stelle Light read-irritating habit of repeating known facts over and over as filler.
Recensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 4 febbraio 2021

Dear Author
Please stop hammering home the same facts over and over again. It is just filler and extremely irritating, disrupting the flow of an otherwise enjoyable light read. I cannot even focus properly on the characters or plot, while not taxing, since I am so put off by you telling me the very same thing I already know the first 3-4 times you wrote it. To me, that is lazy writing and sloppy editing. It is talking down to the reader as if they were not very bright.

Do no authors actually read a lot any more? So many books that would be good or great these days seem to think it necessary to handhold their readers. They spell out every little detail repeatedly, as if we have the memory of an amnesia patient. This device actually makes the novel less memorable not more. Even after paying full price for these books, I just stop reading.

2,0 su 5 stelle Minimal puzzles, too many brothers
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 12 luglio 2021

I had high expectations for this book, I like puzzles, I like 'will they won't they' romances, I like young adult books. Unfortunately, I found this book more akin to a wattpad wet dream than a gripping piece of fiction. I became tired very quickly of all the possible romances with all the brooding brothers (with very little chemistry) and I felt the 'puzzles' were just a mechanism for the main character to interact with said brothers rather than the inheritance game being the main focus. It wasn't horrible but I think there are probably other books that do it better.
