3,0 su 5 stelle Started out well but the end is a total letdown

At first I was quite pleased with this book, which I got for free. It's quite a page turner and I got sucked into the tale of the young couple stranded in a seaside town, in a rather sinister guesthouse. Neither of them is very likeable - and their is a suggestion of dark secrets in one person's background which really sucked me into the tale. The buildup is good - however the ending was very poor indeed - the resolution of the ghostly storyline reminded me of the cartoon series 'Scooby-Do', the 'dark' secrets one character is holding turn out to be pretty lame and worst of all - one plotline - concerning the Victorian family who drowned comes to absolutely nothing. Worth getting for free perhaps but I wouldn't advice anyone to fork out hard cash for it.

I really enjoyed the pace of this book, as well as the plot. It didn’t have any unnecessary “padding”, which is why I gave it five stars, just the plot, character development and storyline, all which unfolded at a quick and timely pace. The plot was inventive and one which I didn’t guess. There were a few different threads running at the same time in this story, all quite unbeknown to me until the end. I’d like to read more from this author.

What a terrible start to Grace and Charles's honeymoon! After a perfect wedding on Valentine's Day, they are on the train to St Ives, determined to enjoy themselves despite a severe weather warning. The storm worsens and the journey is cut short by a huge oak tree coming down on the line. Luckily they are very close to the station for Saltwater, a pretty little fishing village. By coincidence this happens to be where Charles spent several summers as a child/teen. Another coincidence, the only guest house with any vacancies is The Anchorage which is where Charles actually stayed with his family on three separate occasions.

The setting and atmosphere are beautifully created by this author and I was glad I was sitting nice and cosy by the fire while reading this book. I have given this book just three stars because I expected it to be a psychological suspense but at times I felt it had more of a supernatural element. The pace was on the slow side until the final third of the book when it picked up but I felt a little cheated as all the loose ends where tied up in the final few chapters via a podcast and lengthy explanations by both Grace, Charles and a third person. Sadly I felt this spoilt the story as did having so many coincidences and a far-fetched ending.

5,0 su 5 stelle Creepy!

This is a creepy book so I feel it will appeal to psychological thriller lovers as well as supernatural fans. The whole tone is set from the beginning as a shadow feels as though it’s been cast over The Anchorage in Saltwater. It has this claustrophobic feel that only tightens its grip as the story unravels.

I loved the opening. Honeymooners, Charles and Grace start with hope. Hope of a long happy marriage and a wonderfully luxurious honeymoon in a top hotel but soon, things get in their way. In fact, it feels as though they’re doomed. The seaside town of Saltwater comes across as gloomy and dangerous.

I totally enjoyed immersing myself into the main characters narratives, especially Grace’s. I found her intriguing and thought her injured leg added so much more to the story. There’s nothing like feeling vulnerable when you’re frightened witless! It’s definitely not a book to read under low light in a storm if you’re easily scared. But... I love creepy books so this one suited me fine. ‘The Guest Book’ delivered scares in abundance and I found it to be totally gripping. Loved it!

4,0 su 5 stelle Psychological thriller with a slow build-up but plenty of tension
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 27 maggio 2021

When newlyweds, Charles and Grace, are travelling by train towards St Ives for their honeymoon, their train is delayed by a terrible storm which brings down a tree upon the trainlines. They and the rest of the passengers have to stay the night in Saltwater, the nearest small town, but by the time Charles and Grace get to the town there is only one guesthouse with any vacancies. They thankfully check into the imposing house, but Grace is kept awake by the sound of child crying in one of the other rooms but the next morning they discover they are the only guests. As their stay in Saltwater is indefinitely extended by the bad weather, other strange things to happen and Grace finds a message in the guest book: Leave now. Do not trust them.

This was a gripping read for the most part. There are chapters told from both Grace and Charles's point of view and we learn that they are both hiding things from each other. The author manages to evoke a sense of isolation and almost suffocating oppression around Saltwater: they hardly see any of the other train passengers, the townspeople are reluctant to talk to them about the guest house, and the weather with the mist and fog cuts them off from the outside world. I think it all worked very well and it was well worth reading. I recommend this to anyone who likes slow-burning psychological thrillers.

Thanks to NetGalley and publishers, Random House UK/Vintage, for the opportunity to read an ARC. I am voluntarily giving an honest review.

2,0 su 5 stelle Could have been better

A bit boring and repetitive but not bad. I would have given 3 stars if not for the strange way words were hyphenated in the middle. Inti-macy is one example of many.

3,0 su 5 stelle Not a bad book really
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 27 gennaio 2021

I enjoyed reading this ghost story with a twist. Very easy to read, not too many characters which was a bonus, and atmospheric in places. A quick to read book.
The only flaw is the scattering of hyphenated words throughout the book that should not be hyphenated at all.
I think that whoever copied this over onto Kindle version is not familiar with the English language at all.
Here's an example of what I mean...not necessarily in the book but just an example.
At-tendance. For-given. At-tic.

5,0 su 5 stelle Finished in a weekend!
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 7 marzo 2021

I really enjoyed this book; it’s been one of the most easily enjoyable reads I’ve had for a while. It took no time at all to be drawn into the story. I really enjoyed the chapters being from different viewpoints and the pace the story moved at was perfect!

I’ve seen some reviews saying it could’ve been better/unlikeable characters/silly ending but I disagree with all of these!

The atmosphere was nicely built up, I liked that it got me thinking and doubting events and characters whilst trying to work out the possible ending! There were lots of threads that were going at once with the suggestion of some dark secrets from the main characters... I didn’t know or guess the ending until the ending!

Give it a go!

A bit disappointed in this. It could have been, should have been better. But fair play, obviously very familiar with Cornwall and all its ghost stories.
