An exciting read

It’s a well used plot but well written and driven along by short chapters from the different point of views of the three main characters. There’s some good dialogue and the police procedure is pretty accurate (for a change!). The characters are a bit cliched but the story rattles along with some genuine twists and an unsettling, genuinely creepy, atmosphere making it a proper page turner. Two things prevented me from giving it a very rare 5 stars. Why were the children abducted in the first place, and what did the detective’s pregnancy have to do with the story? Otherwise it was an excellent book by a promising author.

The Memory Wood by Sam Lloyd has been on my TBR pile for some time now and I’m so pleased I’ve finally got round to reading it. This is one of the most original crime novels I’ve read in recent years. It’s tense, atmospheric, and I thought the characters were so well drawn. Sam Lloyd really makes them feel like real people. I’d heard this book had a big twist, so my expectations were high, and I have to say I was knocked for six with the revelations that came.

The novel opens with the abduction of a young girl, Elissa, as she is on her way to a school chess tournament with her mother. But she isn’t the first child to have disappeared and the police fear that the same person might be behind the abductions. When her abductor takes her to a new location, Elissa meets Elijah, and there is something peculiar about him. I was never quite sure what was going on here, when Elissa is taken to this place Elijah calls The Memory Wood, and what her abductors reasons were for taking her. It’s what makes the novel so intense and so gripping. I really had no idea if Elissa was going to survive.

The book is so cleverly well plotted. I liked the growing bond that there is between Elissa and Elijah, even though Elissa is in an unimaginable and horrific situation, he does seem to be, to her, the only source of hope she has, and this is what keeps her going. But I was also fearful that Elijah might snap, leaving Elissa alone. I felt as though I couldn’t trust Elijah as I was reading these scenes.

I also liked the chapters told from the point of view of the Detective, Mairead. You can feel her determination to find Elissa and bring her abductor to justice. I liked her and her voice and I would be interested to see her return in a future book. She also has a very personal story in this book, which made me feel for her, and her emotions came through strongly on the page.

If you have not read this book yet, then you need to pick it up as soon as possible. I’m kicking myself that it’s taken me this long to get round to reading it. I’m sure now that Sam Lloyd will become an auto buy author for me and I’m already looking forward to reading his next novel. I highly recommend The Memory Wood.

Oh my God The Memory Wood was absolutely brilliant , I was not expecting that at all. There were so many twists and turns, this was a crazy, ride of your life sort of book. It was an unforgettable read and has to be one of the best thrillers I have read in a very long time. I did not see any of the twists coming and I was literally like what on earth just happened. No joke there was parts I actually had to reread because I actually thought I'd read it wrong to begin with.

13 year old Elissa - a chess prodigy is drugged and abducted from a car park outside a chess tournament. When she wakes up she finds that she is chained to a tough floor in a dark cellar. In order to survive she must do as she is told by her captor - a foul smelling man she calls the ghoul. She is visited regularly by 12 year old Elijah who has grown up in Memory woods, Elissa decides to befriend Elijah in the hopes that he will help her escape her captivity.

This book was jaw-dropping in places, the suspense was brilliant and had me in the edge of my seat, I couldn't wait to finish it and literally raced though the book so I could find out how it ended. Oh my God that ending, I have no words, I mean none, I was not expecting it and it literally blew me away and left me speechless. It was a total Eh what just happened? This is very well written and although it is told from three different perspectives - Elissa, Elijah and Mairead, the story flows effortlessly. The writing is excellent, I was drawn into the story from the start, experiencing all of Elissa's pain and fear when she was captured. I loved Elissa's character, she was brave, strong and determined. Even though she was only 13 she was feisty and refused to give in. What's character development was outstanding and mind-blowing. I love what the author did with him and his he connected the whole story together.

This was a dark, twisted and chilling take on child kidnapping and although it wasn't always an easy read I have to hand it to the author for his superb writing skills and his ingenious plot twists.

Please don’t read this if you are of a sensitive disposition. I did read it, based on good reviews, but I found it disturbing and creepy. Yes, it’s fiction, of course, but it’s taken me several days to recover from the nasty images. Also distressing was the investigating officer’s back story, particularly for women.
Sorry, Sam Lloyd, but it should come with a Shudder Warning.

📖: Elijah discovers an abducted girl, Elissa, within a run down cottage in the Memory Wood where he lives. Elijah thinks he should tell someone of his discovery but he enjoys having a friend to talk to. Elissa sees Elijah as her only way to escape from her kidnapper: The Ghoul.

💭: I think a lot of people will enjoy this book and rate it much more highly. I tend to place myself in the author's shoes and imagine how I would end thrillers while I'm reading them and even with this one I guessed the main two "reveals" (which I won't spoil) but I don't think they were at all obvious, so will probably shock most. I've been in a bit of a reading slump this week which may have affected my reading of this one though😕

The story is told from the points of view of Elissa (which I mostly enjoyed although her continuous references to chess were a bit annoying), Elijah (who provided the best and most interesting chapters) and a police officer (which I didn't enjoy and wanted to skim over, I wasn't at all interested in her personal life and don't feel like it added anything to the story).

I wasn't sure what I'd gotten into at first, but I kept reading. I'm so glad I did! Very twisted, complex, what you think you understand isn't so, but hugely satisfying in the end. Sadly, evil does exist and this fiction reminds us.
