📖: Elijah discovers an abducted girl, Elissa, within a run down cottage in the Memory Wood where he lives. Elijah thinks he should tell someone of his discovery but he enjoys having a friend to talk to. Elissa sees Elijah as her only way to escape from her kidnapper: The Ghoul.

💭: I think a lot of people will enjoy this book and rate it much more highly. I tend to place myself in the author's shoes and imagine how I would end thrillers while I'm reading them and even with this one I guessed the main two "reveals" (which I won't spoil) but I don't think they were at all obvious, so will probably shock most. I've been in a bit of a reading slump this week which may have affected my reading of this one though😕

The story is told from the points of view of Elissa (which I mostly enjoyed although her continuous references to chess were a bit annoying), Elijah (who provided the best and most interesting chapters) and a police officer (which I didn't enjoy and wanted to skim over, I wasn't at all interested in her personal life and don't feel like it added anything to the story).

The idea on which the plot of this novel is based is certainly not original. Close connections between captured and abductor feature in a number of thrillers. Nonetheless, there is something distinctive about this book , which sets it apart. It's well written, especially the early sections. It's probably heresy to say so but the suspense as to whether Elissa will win the chess championship almost overrides the drama which follows. Although Mairead, the detective in charge of the investigation, is more original than her many counterparts in other books, in the end, the police activity degenerates into something overdramatic and cliched. The book is an interesting psychological account with a genuine twist at the end. It is not difficult to find the central male character credible, but the girl becomes increasingly idealised, to an extent where it becomes difficult to suspend disbelief. The first half of the novel is a strong 4 but as melodrama intrudes the story weakens and also the exchanges between the central characters become repetitive. I would not wish to put off anyone from reading this book; I realise that many see qualities that elude me.

Loved the first half of this book,characters were interesting especially 2 main protagonists. The female detective is a bit cliched, her issues etc don’t add much to the narrative even though the author attempts to tie them into the storyline. Found second half hard going and flicked over a few paragraphs. The ending was disappointing,the reasons behind the abductions weren’t really explored and it all felt bit rushed and chaotic

The book was in great shape, as described on Amazon. It came promptly and was delivered well/respectfully to my front door. Thoughts about the book: it started off slowly but once it picked up, it really did. Hard to put down and easy to finish! The end left some questions but did well to provide some closure with the main characters.

Blood and guts evil and cruelty , survival too but not much in the way of redemption. Hansel and Gretel for grown ups . Darkly disturbing . Not particularly believable or inspirational .
