4,0 su 5 stelle Great for a dog enthusiast

This is a lovely book for a real dog enthusiast. A non-dog-lover would probably fail to see the point. But if you have a dog, you can immediately identify many of the behavioural characteristics and this book provides a well-researched scientific basis for them. It also questions why so many humans ill-treat and abuse what we regard as ‘man’s best friend’.

4,0 su 5 stelle Great for any dog lover how likes to understand the science behind their relationships with humans
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 12 marzo 2020
Most dog owners sense that their dogs love them, but this book gives you the science behind what we all sense....explaining in detail about their behaviour and the evolution of the man-dog relationship over time and just why they seem to be so devoted to us as a species.

He looks in detail at various scientific studies, looking at their behaviour, delving into their genetics and even the chemical reactions of their brains and recounts studies that he has been involved with in great detail. He also explores the behaviour of dogs in different environments, whether in rescue homes or those not homes with families. Likewise, he observes wolves which are held in captivity and compares their behaviour with that of the domesticated dog.

Dr Wynne clearly loves dogs and you can sense this with the passion he has talking about this subject. You can also feel his pain as he looks at the less loving relationships, such as those seen exhibited by so-called "breeders" who inbreed dogs to the extent that they often have seriously life-limiting physical problems or other issues, which do not benefit the dogs in any way and only benefit the breeder in financial terms.

This is a great book for any dog lover who likes to understand the science behind ideas.

4,0 su 5 stelle Accessible Science
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 29 novembre 2019
This is an engaging approach to a topic most dog owners will be in no doubt about - whether dogs are capable of love, and whether or not they love *you*. It's accessibly written by a man who is passionate about his subject from both a personal and professional standpoint. Dr Wynne clearly loves dogs, especially his own, but he also loves learning more about them be it behaviour, genetics or even the chemical reactions of their brains.

I found it an enjoyable read, although it didn't throw up many surprises for me. The wide variety of experiments was fascinating, even if some of the methods were highly questionable. It ranges across the world and through history as it examines our own attitudes towards inter-species relationships and animal intelligence almost as much as the dogs themselves. The author doesn't just review the experiments and current research projects, he often recounts those he was involved in himself, as well as visiting owners and fellow scientists to discover more. He also explores the darker side of dog ownership, from the unethical standards and practises of breeders to the overpopulation and tragic conditions of rescue shelters, and questions whether we are worthy to be loved by dogs at all.

I liked it a lot, although I felt like the author missed something vital but not mentioning boerboels in his section on guard dogs, which made me wonder what else he might have missed. However, no popular science book can mention everything and on the whole, I think this one did a good job.

4,0 su 5 stelle Say it With Love!
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 20 novembre 2019
If you've had dogs in your life for a long time or put a lot of effort into training and understanding behavior etc then this book might not tell you a great deal new, but it's interesting and nice to read none the less as it's all organised and presented pretty well. If however you're a new dog owner or you know of someone one who might be getting a dog/puppy soon then this is a really great book to get for them! It does have a lot of very useful and practical info in it but is more than just a how-to or emotionless training book - it's a good mix of useful and interesting and for new dog owners and will also hopefully help them to not make too many unintentional or upsetting mistakes for their new buddy, which is really essential when dogs give absolutely every piece of themselves to us and ask for virtually nothing back - the least you can do is put a bit of effort into understanding them better and if you understand why and how they love you then you can more easily make sure that they likewise understand why and how you love them :) Seems fair! Dogs are beautiful, lovely and highly lovable creatures and it never hurts to find new ways of letting them know that.

4,0 su 5 stelle A great guide to behaviour for dog lovers
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 18 novembre 2019
This book is an interesting read for anyone fascinated by our four legged friends and how they behave around humans.

There's a huge amount of information contained in the book but Clive Wynne manages to collect both his own work and that of others together in an easy to read and ordered way so it's always great to pick this up and find something new about our canine companions. He mixes his own anecdotes and stories with research to back up his theories, making them easier to digest as they are based on real-world scenarios.

As with any theory book on a well worn subject, some of the content won't be new to many people, dogs have been discussed on TV, in book and radio programmes for many years and people seem to generally have a large appetite for more information about dog behaviour but the book as a whole does bring a lot of these different ideas together in one place, along with some of the author's personal experiences, which are worth reading about on their own.

This would be a great present for a dog lover who loves to read and does help us understand our companions a little better, which can only be a good thing.

4,0 su 5 stelle Beautiful book for any dog lover.
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 17 febbraio 2020
This is a lovely book for any dog lover, if you don't love books or have an interest in their relationships with their owners then I would suggest that this book is not for you. But if you do have a dog then you will surely find this book fascinating and, at times, emotional. I am very much a dog lover, I have been lucky enough to have owned four dogs in my adult life and every one of them was part of the family and very much loved, I'd like to think that they loved me too and so this book was interesting to read and see that yes, it is likely that in their own way they did. I especially enjoyed reading about the research done with dogs and their owners and seeing how they were bonded and what it all meant. It is quite wordy but this book made me smile and it very nearly made me cry.

4,0 su 5 stelle An encouraging view of dog-human connection
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 23 gennaio 2020
If you love dogs - as I do - you probably don't need someone to tell you that they 'love' us too... Sometimes, doggy behaviour is explained in purely behaviourist terms: seen only as a means-to-an-end - ie food and shelter. Yet, this book challenges that view, and sees the dog-human connection as something much deeper and more meaningful. I enjoyed the explanaitons of doggy behavious, and can definitely see the truth of what the author says when I observe my own lovely mutts.
For dog lovers, a very enjoyable an insightful read.

4,0 su 5 stelle Good insights into your hairy hound
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 18 dicembre 2019
My wife's been reading this and she's found it very interesting. Every now and then she reads out some unusual fact and we discuss it in relation to our two dogs, who're as different as chalk and cheese. I can't say I agree with everything she's told me, but it's all thought provoking and helps you to have a better understanding of what the family mutt(s) are up to. If you've got a dog, especially if you've never had one before, it's certainly worth a read as it's full of fascinating facts. Recommended.

4,0 su 5 stelle For dog lovers
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 21 novembre 2019
I think most people develop a strong bond with their dogs, in fact if you are not into dogs, they way people behave with their dogs is probably weird. This book goes some way to explain the nature of the bond. If you have not read much about dog behaviour this will give you a big leg up. Even if you have lesarned a bit previously, this will interest you - there are some competing theories after all. An enjoable easy read, which you can pick up and dip into.

4,0 su 5 stelle Interesting analysis
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 8 novembre 2019
Very interesting look at something that many dog-owners take for granted — the bond between somebody and their dog. It does a good job of explaining why and how the dog becomes attached to its owner, and although some of it is undoubtedly assuming that digs can feel emotions in exactly the same way that humans can, which I think is doubtful, there is a lot of convincing argument. Four stars.
