Dark and deadly

I was late coming to the Grey and Miles series but have had immense pleasure in catching up with all that I missed. To me, it is the combination of the setting, fantastic characters that you are rooting for - flaws and all - and stories which keep you hooked with their blend of the dark and, sometimes, disturbing. There is a real tension about them, a feeling of being kept on the edge, and the author isn't afraid to challenge the reader with murders that stop short of gratuitous violence but do leave you with enough detail to make you grimace.

Truth or Die is no different, and what may start out as a seemingly simple (by Katerina Diamond standards) murder of a college professor, taking a very unexpected turn, leaving the Detecting duo of Imogen Grey and Adrian Miles with a trail of bodies and series of ever more perplexing clues to unravel. Speaking of unraveling, a serious allegation threatens to derail both the investigation and possibly even Miles' career. With the relationship between the two Detectives heading into uncharted waters, this book will have fans well and truly hooked.

I don't want to say too much about the story itself as I think that you need to read to appreciate it. It's a very complex tale, with many threads being skilfully woven into a slowly emerging picture, one which may not catch you completely unawares but is still absolutely fascinating to watch. I had an inkling as to what might be at stake, but not who was behind it, and it took a while to see how the opening chapter fit into the whole story. It seemed almost completely unrelated, a bit like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle that you sit staring at, unable to tell from the lid where it's meant to fit. It's not until you nearly finish that it all makes sense and that final piece slots in, right where it belongs.

The murder in this range from the simple to the grotesque, and the victims from the manipulative to the spineless. It certainly makes me thankful that my University Professors all seemed relatively normal in comparison. the book also explores the idea of how easy it might be to manipulate young minds, those who have a fractured past or underprivileged upbringing, something which is, regrettably, believable.

I loved the way in which the author explored the ever more complicated relationship between Miles and Grey. It took somewhat of a turn in the last book, both of them seeking solace in each others company, albeit completely platonically. But with the chemistry between them, it makes for a heady mix and it is almost inevitable that a lot of this book is spent examining this dynamic.

It's a kind of coupling that both makes sense but also instills dread in me as a reader as Katerina Diamond isn't the kind of author who seems to do light and fluffy, so a happy ending cannot be on the cards even if they are both due a break. What that would then mean for our intrepid duo I wouldn't like to guess but no doubt it will make the reading very interesting. I can't wait to read the next book in the series to find out!

This is the fifth book in an excellent police procedural series and, for me, record-breaking. Never before have I read a book So quickly!

The plot is full of twists and turns, as in the previous books but Truth or Die also delves deep into the two main characters’ relationship to add a little more spice.

This book can be read as a stand-alone but I would thoroughly recommend reading the other titles in the series first so you can get to know Imogen Grey and Adrian Miles and understand what makes them tick . It would also be helpful to know the backstory of a couple of other characters in this this one too.

Not for the faint hearted or easily shocked, this book contains graphic descriptions of grisly murders and a great deal of suspense. So much of the latter in fact that I literally could not put it down! I cannot wait for the next book in the series to discover the fate of two fairly main characters from this (and another) book and whether a murder in the previous book will ever be uncovered.

Roll on January for the next instalment!!

I've read all of Katerina Diamond's Grey and Miles series and enjoyed them all. They're not the gritty realism of Rebus or the lyrical prose of James Lee Burke but they're entertaining and usually an easy,if gruesome read. As ever Ms Diamond doesn't stint on the latter and if you're the type that has nightmares her at descriptions of dismemberment and gore probably suggest her books are not for you.
I think this is the first of her books that I haven't awarded 5 stars as for me it was enjoyable but also a little unsatisfactory in a couple of areas. Firstly a large part of the book concerns the changing relationship between Miles and Grey. While this has been a thread throughout the last couple of books in this one it almost takes centre stage and for too many pages it's a distinctly un-thrilling thriller. The other is that it's almost a re-hash of her first book,Academics being butchered for various foul deeds they've committed. The similarity is strengthened by another link with that book that I won't reveal as it would be a spoiler.
I was left while reading this book that the author was running out of ideas, the plot isn't a million miles from "The Teacher" and the lead character's personal lives took up far too many pages.
I'll still read the next in the series,even my favourite authors have put out the odd below par book in various series before and redeemed themselves with the next one.
To get the most out of this book ideally you'll have been following the series.......but if you do you'll probably find this one a bit disappointing.
Not a bad book but Katrina Diamond can do better.

I'm not a huge fan of writing reviews, to be honest I'm lazy. But I've read all of this author's books now and it's about time I gave back and left a review, especially if it persuades Katerina to write more of the same. I loved this one, as I have when she first shocked me with The Teacher. Imogen and Adrian are back and they have to battle with their consciences when a nemesis comes back to make their professional lives complicated. This book grips you from the first page and you just know you're in for a treat. I love that you're able to feel for the main characters and their complex private lives as they deal with particularly gruesome murders. It's full of twists and turns, highs and lows and a "I didn't see that coming!" or two. This makes for a great summer read.

"Woman in the Water" already on pre-order.

I excitedly pre-ordered Truth or Die as all Katerina's previous novels have been brilliant to say the least. Unfortunately it was not the case this time. The first three quarters literally plodded along and then 'boom' it galloped over the final hurdle to a very disappointing finish. For what I thought would be an odds on favourite turned out to be a distant outsider.

Bravo Katerina, you have done it again. I've read all of Katerina Diamonds Miles/Grey series so far so was really pleased another one had been written. I finished this one last night and as usual, I loved it and couldn't put it down. I don't want to give any spoilers but I am so glad that finally something has moved along with the will they wont they scenario. Oh and I absolutely have the same feelings DS Miles has about one of his old "friends" and I would have done the same as him throughout all the books. What is it they say.... "an eye for an eye". I have already downloaded "Woman In the water" onto my Kindle and once my TBR books are slightly down in number, I will read that (I want to let this last one sink in first).

OK, it took me 3 weeks to read this saga about the nasty goings on at Bristol and Exeter universities. It was interesting to see Parker making a re-appearance, himself a past victim of torture.
On the front cover is a red disc with the words 'Not for the faint hearted'. I'll leave it to future readers to work out what the inference might be there.

Just finished and as usual I have nothing but praise for Katerina Diamond. Her characters are always great and you can completely relate to them on so many levels. Got a bit worried half way through this time with certain events 😉 but as always she came through to what I wanted to happen (am I saying too much?). Anyway I will always recommend her books to anyone who asks and plenty more who don't. If you want books that are deliciously dark, emotionally infuriating and totally addictive buy them!!!!!!!! Now I've got to wait for the next one, mind you I've already pre ordered it 😍.

Disappointing and stopped reading

I gave up on this book at the point where Miles and Grey got intimate. What a total disappointment and completely ruined the story for me. I loved the first book and decided to read all in the series but The Promise was where things started to go wrong as the author seemed fixated on the main characters getting together. WHY ? They had a perfect friendship and working relationship and to put them together as a couple totally ruins their dynamic and makes a farce of their positions and jobs. I won’t bother reading on or attempting the last book in the series. Very lazy of the author and seems to suggest she ran out of ideas and had to finish the book deal quickly
