Gillian McAllister knows how to write a gripping novel. Whenever she has a new book out it always go straight to the top of my reading pile, she is one of the best writers of psychological thrillers out there at the moment. Her latest The Evidence Against You is another absolutely compelling read that will keep you turning the pages.

Twenty years ago, Izzy’s mother was murdered and her body left in the woods. Izzy’s father was later found guilty of killing her. Now he has finally been released from prison and is keen to make amends with Izzy, but she soon realises that he means to try and convince her of his innocence. Izzy carefully begins to unpick the evidence that lead to her father’s trial and conviction and startling revelations begin to come to light. Could her father be telling the truth? Was someone else responsible for her mother's murder?

One thing that Gillian McAllister really writes well in her novels is the relationships that her characters have, and in this book, this was especially the case with Izzy and her husband, Nick. I loved the way how Gillian fleshed out their marriage, and they really become real people, who you could just imagine being a couple that you know.

Izzy was a character who I could root for all the way through. She is someone who has gone through unimaginable turmoil, losing one parent to a heinous act and then to find out that it was her other parent who committed it. It must be very hard even to begin to imagine what that does to a person. Gillian kept me asking questions about Izzy’s dad, was he innocent or was he guilty? I was never sure if he was simply toying with her and I couldn’t help but feel for her as she attempted to try and make sense out of everything that was happening, especially when she was being told repeatedly that there was no mistake in the original conviction. It seemed impossible at times to think that she would ever get to the real truth, as so much time had passed since her mother’s death.

This is another brilliant book from Gillian McAllister that I was very excited to read and it did not disappoint. She is proving to be a psychological thriller writer who is at the top of her game. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

I was gripped with this book from page one. This is the first book I have read from Gillian McAllister and I will be searching for more of her work.

The Evidence Against You: The gripping new psychological thriller from the Sunday Times bestsellerI loved the character of Izzy, a grown up but still a child. She owns and runs her mother's restaurant although she doesn't love it like her mother had. She prefers to come home and eat Angel Delight straight from the jug and fish finger sandwiches. Izzy's love was Ballet. She'd dreamt of being a top ballerina yet she had not danced since her mother's murder.

She's married to Nick, a police analyst. He's steady, secure and reliable nothing like her father Gabe. Gabe is a free spirit who loved nothing more than painting in his container. He struggles to hold down a 9 to 5 job. He was wild, he was free, he was passionate.

I loved the way this book flipped from current day back to the weeks and months and even the day of the murder. It really drew me in and made me question each of the characters that I encountered.

Izzy's on an emotional roller coaster and you can't help your heart going out to her. This book made my eyes fill with tears at some points.

The secrets and lies within the family are about to come to the surface but who is the killer? I certainly couldn't work it out.

Gillian McAllister is a new author to me. I read many of this type of crime thriller and this is well up there with manyt of them. Told mainly on the lovely island setting of the Isle of Wight, I felt pretty sorry for the lead female character Izzy. Her mother was murdered when she was 17. Her father has just been released from prison, having been convicted of killing her. He is adamant he didn't. I love how things twist and turn as they (including Izzy's husband, police analyst Nick) gather more and more information. One moment she believes him, then something else happens and she doesn't. No spoilers, but is quite a heart rending tale of love and loss and ended the only way it could have really, bearing in mind how the last 19 years have panned out for everybody involved. Enjoyed it so much I have already bought latest novel, How to Disappear, and may buy others in the future. 5 stars from me.

An excellent and emotionally charged story that tells how the lives of an entire family can be affected by the arrest and incarceration of one member accused of murder, rightly or wrongly. The story is cleverly paced and all the way through the reader is wondering if the convicted man is or isn't guilty and, if not, how on earth he can establish his innocence. Then, just as one decides his guilt or innocence, the story twists again and again and the end is a complete surprise. It will have you wondering if one can ever be totally certain of another's guilt or innocence and a lot of emotions besides. Highly Recommended

I've read several books by this author and I really like the way she is able to describe her characters in a very real way with all their flaws and I find myself feeling for them.
This story is gentler-paced, as other reviewers have mentioned, and perhaps that's necessary to give an impression of the events in the lives that led up to Gabe being incarcerated for Alex's murder. It gave me a strong impression of a build-up and then a sense of the emotional tumult Izzy was feeling when she saw Gabe again and he continues to protest his innocence. It's a sad story, really, as murder often is - not like Hollywood drama, even when the truth is finally revealed, just really sad and a bit sordid.

I really enjoyed The Evidence Against You, you can see how much Gillian has developed as a writer when looking back at Everything But The Truth. The plot was well written especially with the amount of research Gillian did for the book to be consistently accurate.

I love that the Isle of Wight was used as the location of the book as I feel it was a perfect setting due to how isolating it could be, due to having to get a ferry to mainland England and how small it is. All of the characters were likeable too, apart from Nick. I really felt sorry for Gabriel from the very beginning.
