4,0 su 5 stelle A very good but idiosyncratic set
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 17 novembre 2022
Acquisto verificato
This is an intriguing set of Tchaikovsky symphonies, and it’s certainly terrific value for money. But it would be inadvisable to buy it as a starter set in a collection because Rostropovich’s tempi are eccentric. This is most noticeable in the fifth symphony. Under Rostropovich this comes in at 53 minutes, compared with a median timing of 47 for my other recordings (the fastest is Mravinsky at a breakneck 43!). Rostropovich’s slowness is most striking at the start, where the music comes close to stopping in its tracks. My ideal set for the symphonies remains Jansons with the Oslo PO for Chandos. His performances are glorious throughout and the Chandos engineers did a wonderful job. Rostropovich makes for interesting, but sometimes frustrating, listening.

5,0 su 5 stelle New and Improved Box of Rostropovich Conducting Tchaikovsky's Symphonies
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 3 marzo 2017
Acquisto verificato
Mstislav Rostropovich was a great cellist.
More controversial as a conductor.
He was not a baton technician.
He was an instinctual conductor with an oversized personality, like Beecham, Stokowski and Koussevitzky
- all of whom started at the top of the conducting profession without the usual apprenticeship.

The seven Tchaikovsky Symphonies (including Manfred) were Mstislav Rostropovich's recording debut as a conductor, at least in the West.
Recorded with the London Philharmonic, and issued on seven EMI LPs in 1976.
Remastered in 1995 and issued in a five CD set, coupled with 1977 recordings of Francesca da Rimini and Romeo & Juliet.
Reissued in 2008.
To this, the new set from Warner adds three works digitally recorded by Erato and Teldec:
-- 1812 Overture (National Symphony of Washington, 1988)
-- Serenade melancolique with violinist Maxim Vengerov (London Symphony, 1999)
-- Rococo Variations with Rostropovich cello (Seiji Ozawa, Boston Symphony, 1985)
This requires an additional CD, but the total cost is less than before.

One major advantage of the new six CD box is that every symphony is complete on a single CD.
Nothing is split between discs - unlike the old five CD box in which Symphonies 3 and 6 required two CDs each.
Modified "original jacket" format - different artwork on the front of each jacket (see photos), track listings on the back.
Twenty page booklet in three languages.
Disappointment: Nothing is newly remastered.
Predictable in view of the price.
Even so, I am quite satisfied with the 1995 remasterings.
Opulent sound - these symphonies were among the last recorded in the late, lamented Kingsway Hall.

The Rostropovich recording of Tchaikovsky that I recommend over all others is the "Manfred Symphony".
The first minute sounds like EMI recruited every clarinetist in London for the recording session
(actually scored for two clarinets and one bass clarinet).
Remarkable.
For additional recordings of Tchaikovsky conducted by Rostropovich (including one of the great Pathetiques) see Comments One and Two (dated 3 March, 2017). Click on "Sort by oldest".

There are two extremes of Tchaikovsky interpretation on record:
Classical versus Romantic.
The world saw Tchaikovsky as Romantic; Tchaikovsky saw himself as a Classicist (Mozart was his God).
Depending on my mood (or chemical imbalance) I can appreciate both approaches.
For the "Complete" Tchaikovsky Symphonies, my favorites are:

CLASSICAL (intellectual, controlled, neat)
-- Markevitch, London Symphony*
-- Abravanel, Utah Symphony*
ROMANTIC (emotional, undisciplined, messy)
-- Bernstein, New York Philharmonic*
-- Rostropovich, London Philharmonic REVIEWED ON THIS PAGE
MIDDLE-OF-THE-ROAD (not as bad as it sounds)
-- Ormandy, Philadelphia Orchestra*
Completeness: All but Bernstein and Markevitch include the Manfred Symphony (Bernstein hated it, Markevitch's Manfred is on a separate CD)
Ormandy goes one further and includes the mysterious "Seventh Symphony", a work of which I am inordinately fond.

Individual recommendations:
-- Symphonies 1 & 3: Bernstein (but not Symphony 2)
-- Symphony 2: Dorati, London Symphony - Dorati used to be a ballet conductor and it shows.*
-- Symphony 7: Ormandy - even if you don't like Ormandy (I do), this box is essential for the Seventh Symphony.
-- Manfred Symphony: Rostropovich
-- Symphonies 4-6: My current favorites are polar opposites
----- Klemperer, Philharmonia: Clarity and power without hysteria.*
----- Late Bernstein: his 1986-1989 DG recordings with the New York Philharmonic.*
Late Bernstein is perfect for when I am depressed.
It always cheers me up to know that there is someone who is even more depressed.

-- Wild Card: My ultimate Tchaikovsky conductor has always been Serge Koussevitsky with the Boston Symphony.*
Born in 1874, Koussevitsky was 19 when Tchaikovsky composed the Pathetique Symphony.
He left Russia at age 31, and ended up in America, where he conducted the Boston Symphony from 1924 to 1951
(young Leonard Bernstein was his assistant).
Koussevitsky's Tchaikovsky is Romantic, Emotional, Undisciplined and Messy.
Russian to the core - I love it.
Rostropovich on steroids.
I wonder if Sony will ever issue "Serge Koussevitsky: The Complete RCA Recordings" (or at least the complete Tchaikovsky recordings).

* OTHER RECORDINGS MENTIONED IN THIS REVIEW:
- Abravanel:
Tchaikovsky: Complete Symphonies; Overtures
- Bernstein:
6 Symphonies  currently out-of-print as a set, but available as singles.
- Dorati:
Dorati conducts Tchaikovsky: Symphonies 1-6  currently out-of-print and expensive. If it ever comes back, it would be one of my preferred "Classical" sets. His recording of Symphony 2 is in  Symphonies 1, 2 & 3/Arensky Variations (Lso/Dorati)
- Markevich:
Complete Symphonies  (+ Manfred Symphony:  Great Conductors of the 20th Century: Igor Markevitch )
- Ormandy:
Eugene Ormandy Conducts Tchaikovsky

Symphonies 4-6:
- Klemperer:
Romantic Symphonies
- Late Bernstein:
Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos.4 - 6; Orchestral works
- Koussevitsky:
Koussevitzky Conducts Tchaikovsky (2CD)  Until Sony gives us a Koussevitsky box, we will have to make do with these radio broadcasts.

5,0 su 5 stelle A Passionate Relationship
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 26 marzo 2017

When I turned 13, I was then getting interested in classical music - something that my parents didn't really listen to, but my interest had been aroused by one of those inspiring teachers at school that we all too often believe only exist within Goodbye Mr. Chips or Dead Poet's Society. With my birthday money in my pocket, I headed off to the local department store to buy an LP of the fifth symphony. I was a little naive in thinking that only one composer had written a fifth symphony, and so was a little traumatised when confronted by many different works with the same title. I had heard of Tchaikovsky, and so bought that one and headed home. Job done. Then I placed the LP on my record player and realised it didn't sound a bit like the work I had heard (which was, of course, by Beethoven), but I fell in love with Tchaikovsky's fifth symphony nonetheless, somehow absorbed by the while EMI Eminence label as it spun around, the informative liner notes (that I didn't wholly understand at the time) and the painting on the front of the LP cover. The recording was the one contained in this boxed set.

A few years down the line, I came across Manfred, clearly part of the same series of LPs, and bought that too, and then some of the others as and when I came across them - which was more difficult back in the days before looking something up on Ebay and being given a choice of copies to buy. A few more years later, and I was converting to CD, and bought a different cycle of the Tchaikovsky symphonies, which I suppose I thought would sound the same no matter who was conducting. My Rostropovich LPs were disposed of, and I was left with a rather unsatisfying set of the music I had loved.

Eventually, the Rostropovich set on CD came my way but, as discussed by Mr Fowler in his review, some symphonies were split over two discs - a ridiculous idea - and the artwork which had clearly first attracted me wasn't there either. But it was a step in the right direction. A further step came last year, when Warner in Japan released the seven symphonies on seven individual discs but, alas, only the first three had the original artwork of the LP, and the other four just had a generic picture of Tchaikovsky (no idea why).

Now, with this current set, we are almost reaching perfection. No symphonies are split over two discs, and the artwork of the LPs can be found on the front of the cardboard sleeves containing each CD. There is one exception (hence the "almost" perfection) in that the first two LPs are combined onto one CD and so only the artwork from one LP is retained. It's a shame the missing artwork wasn't used for the front of the box, but this is, I think, good enough. Why, at 43 years of age, LP artwork matters to me so much, I have no idea. Perhaps a mid-life crisis as I yearn for the things that gave me pleasure in my youth. Perhaps I'm just a sentimental old fool (and that is the only explanation for me re-buying the 5th symphony on vinyl last year!).

But this is truly a wonderful (and ridiculously cheap) set. I agree with Mr Fowler that Rostropovich's interpretations aren't for everyone. But his passionate, emotional readings of these works sparked something in a 13 year old boy thirty years ago, something he has never ever forgotten - and if a recording can do that, then you can't ask for much more. I fell in love with these recordings back then, and am just as much in love with them now as me and the Rostropovich Tchaikovsky cycle celebrate our Pearl anniversary. There are no plans for separation any time in the future, for there is enough passion in these six discs to sustain any relationship.

4,0 su 5 stelle 「怪演」と呼ぼう
Recensito in Giappone 🇯🇵 il 9 ottobre 2022

5,0 su 5 stelle Excellent set of Tchaikovsky Symphonies and with original artwork.

Rostropovich faces stiff competition, when it comes to Tchaikovsky. Markevitch's Philips cycle is superb, and Mravinsky's Stereo 4.5.6 on DG are considered by many to be the greatest recordings of those particular symphonies. My reason for purchasing this box-set was for the original artwork, which brings back youthful memories of simpler times. There was a time when I could walk into a Music Shop - remember those! - and browse the racks, in the Classical Music section, in peace. Amazon is not as much fun - I don't get to handle the merchandise and there is no sage and wise proprietor to offer guidance... not that I need it nowadays! Anyway, original artwork: I remember buying Rostropovich's Tchaikovsky Fourth Symphony - or was it the Fifth? - when I was about seventeen - 1981! - I think it had been recommended in Gramophone magazine, and rushed home to fire up the hi-fi. Oh, how I miss my old Quad 33/303 amplifier and Spendor BC1 loudspeakers... I slipped the new LP out of its sleeve and onto my Garrard 401 turntable and lowered the SME3009 tonearm. The Shure V15 cartridge/stylus tracked like a bloodhound, and the music came flooding out in waves - both sonic and emotional - the little Quads, huffing and puffing, were pushed to their limits, but valiantly stayed the course, as the mighty Spendor BC1 - BBC monitors - delivered Tchaikovsky's symphony with epic majesty and in glorious technicolour sound. Yes, those were the days! Alas, they are long gone, but it's good to wallow in nostalgia now and again - and that's what these "Original Jackets" are all about - nostalgia! A great set of Tchaikovsky symphonies, in excellent sound quality. Recommended.

3,0 su 5 stelle Good Performance-Engineering Problems

I have liked Rostropovich performances. I started by learning some of the Tchaikovsky operas by listening to "Slava" conducting performances with his wife, Vishnevskaya, in Onegin, Pique Dame, and Iolanta. I bought these symphonies because they were a good bargain, and seemed highly recommended. I like a lot of what I hear. HOWEVER, every now and then the sound is distorted. Like the gain was set too high or something. Probably not noticeable when issued on LP or listening on a speaker sound system. It is just too noticeable when I am listening with earphones. Unacceptable. I will say this. I am starting to prefer the original version of the Rococo Variations and I am very pleased with Isserlis. But Rostropovich is the best I have heard of the more used version.
