I can sum up my review of this book in one line - I didn't understand it!
I spent most of the book thinking Amber and Taylor were different people then it all swapped around and suddenly Amber and Taylor are the same person and Claire enters the equation as the friend who had become the sister! Sorry if I'm confusing you but I was confused. Maybe I had it all wrong but I guess I'll never know and I don't enjoy not knowing!
I don't consider this to be a psychological thriller, I have read many far better. This wasn't thrilling at all. I appear to have missed the 'killer twist you'll never forget'.

This book is full of intrigue. I found it hard to follow after finishing it I am still confused as to who is who. I thought at first there were 3 girls Amber, her sister Claire and Amber's friend Taylor. I wish the book could be explained somewhere. There was intrigue about Amber's husband Paul. Then that seemed to amount to nothing. When the book got to the point of conclusion it seemed to just drag on unnecessarily. It is left open for a sequel so maybe things will be revealed should there be one. The book needs a lot of concentration it was quite a hard read or in my case listen. Though after saying that I would recommend reading it if you are good at working out twists and turns in novels.The narration was excellent. A very pleasant reading voice..

Clever writing with a surprising twist

I purchased an ecopy of this novel at the release because many blogfriends recommended it to me. Of course I needed the publication (and purchase) of the second novel by Alice Feeney to finally bump it up my readlist. I’m happy I finally got round to reading this because I really enjoyed it.

There are no less than 3 plotlines in this novel but this was never confusing and I actually like it when there’s a lot going on as was the case here, it keeps me turning those pages. One of the plotlines follows Amber when she’s 11 years old, another one follows her in the present a few days before she finds herself in the hospital and the last one is the one with Amber in a coma. Well she isn’t actually in a coma, she can hear perfectly fine what is going on around her, she just can’t react in any way. As if that’s not enough, she also can’t remember what happened to her. It’s all rather terrifying and her paranoia towards her husband and sister really rubbed off on me :-). It’s not easy to figure out who to trust when you can’t ask any questions. Someone did this to her and I was ready to crucify them myself!

It made sense that there’s a plotline leading up to ‘the event’ but it was puzzling what the plot about her younger self had to do with the story and how she ended up there. It focused largely on her family situation and her friendship with a girl named Taylor when she was a young girl and I had no doubt there was a meaningfulness that totally escaped me; Taylor wasn’t mentioned in the present at all.

The author built up the tension in the days and hours towards her hospital admission and surprised me with a major twist of category 5 (I know, I just decided to have my own rating for twists and this one is of the same order as being told the earth is flat). So many things are actually connected but invisible to see at first sight. The past did have an effect on the present and to understand the present you have to know about the past. I might sound as if I’m talking in riddles but you just have to read it for yourselves if you want the full detail! I’m impressed with this author’s clever writing and I seriously had to wrap my head around that twist.

In conclusion: a wonderful debut that will keep you guessing for a very long time. Read it, it’ll keep you very entertained!

I read all the reviews and thought, wow this book sounds amazing - I couldn't wait to read it!

It started off well enough, and the 'sometimes i lie' gives the story a great edge - that is, if it hadn't of descended into farce. The plot twist are clumsy and forced, and in the end you think - the whole story is a lie, so why did I bother reading it. It had so much potential , but in the end I was really disappointed.

A curate's egg of a thriller.

This novel is based on an ingenious idea, though someone in a coma would be most unlikely to enjoy such a vigorous inner life. The probability is that the person so afflicted would have little or no consciousness. I suppose this could be put down as one of Amber's lies, but it is a weakness and irritant throughout the book. The twists are cleverly handled, but not entirely coherent, nor consistent.

However, what is really worry is the publishing of a book from an author unable to punctuate accurately or use prepositions correctly. At one time the standard of literacy would have failed this candidate at O Level English Language. In addition, names of key characters are misspelt, though this is more likely the result of sloppy proofreading. Nonetheless, there are flashes of the imaginative use of language, even though much of the writing is flat and uninspiring.

There is potential in the material, certainly. In the hands of someone with a more disciplined approach and finer linguistic skills, this could be a very fine novel.

So this books has possibly one of the shortest blurbs in the history of blurbs – and it completely intrigued me as a result. The idea behind the story is clever – a young woman lying in a coma unpicking the story of how she got there. Bit by bit, through “then” and “now” how she got there unfolds. I like books with secrets, and this has lots. There were great twists and turns which kept me reading. Even by the end, I wasn’t quite sure where the truth lay – and I liked that. That Alice Feeney could do that without leaving me cheated is, I think, the sign of a good storyteller. And this, for me, is a really good story, one I thoroughly enjoyed.

Continuous Strings

A solidly written thriller that keeps surprising

I'm sick of tepid, error laden novels that simply cannot live up to their hype. In this case, Feeney pleasantly surprises.

I remember being 10 in 1992 myself and I was also an avid diarist, so I have proof in my own posession on what the voice of a 10 year old then sounded like. Feeney nails it. I could almost hear my own 10 year old voice in how she writes her own version for the novel. It was actually pretty impressive.

The idea of a convincing voice is Feeney's trump card here - you believe in what she says because of how she says it. This is the required skill in a novel like this. If we can't really believe the narrator from the get go, the impact of any lies or twists in the story would become expected and less impactful.

I expect big things now from Feeney based on the quality and engagement of this novel.

Impressive. Go read it!

A well written thriller which builds with tension throughout the book. Just when you think you know what the story is building towards, you're violently twisted in a different direction. I didn't see the twist coming, when it did come I had to pause and reassess everything I'd read so far, not many books have stopped me in my tracks like this. It completely took me by surprise and I really enjoyed it for that reason. Even without this shock the book was excellent, I can highly recommend it.

Some twists are a little confusing and could be elaborated a little.
The diary entry's were great and tie all the loose ends, however they are a bit lengthy and can be confusing when pared with Amber's word.

This ending has your head 🤯🤯
Like what. It's great, but leaves you with soooo many unanswered questions.
I hope there is a sequal as I would like that ending tied up.
The ending definitely fit into the book.
I don't want to give to much away but I really hope you enjoy this one.

This book is being made into a TV series… I think it will translate well.
Amber is in a coma, she’s trapped in her own, very scary world of hearing and feeling what’s going on around her but is unable to wake up.
The story is told from Amber’s POV (inside her head) and flits between three different timelines: Now - the comma. Before - the accident that put her there. And Then - her 10 year old self.
There are so many story tropes and twists in this book, you’ll need your wits about you and then there’s the ending… I’m still musing on it… (no spoilers).
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me.
