First thing to be said is that if you haven’t read “The Teacher” I suggest you read it before this book. There are a lot of carry overs and in my opinion you will regret treating “The Secret” as a standalone book. The main plot is unique but all the subplots, characters and agendas have been introduced in the previous book.

There are plenty of twists and turns and the story goes at some pace, never quite sure who you can trust, what partnerships have been formed and who’s pulling the strings. There are multiple parallel threads and time shifts so you need to pay attention. One of the great things about the Teacher was the interlinked stories and plots but if you play too hard at interlinking everything it goes beyond the realms of believability and I just felt that threshold was breached in this book.

It’s not a literary force but it is well written and will keep you engrossed making it difficult to set down. Obviously the long term plot will be taken further in “The Angel” and set up just for that in the final chapter.

First things first read The Teacher first I made the mistake of reading the promise first then realised there were 3 books before it lol.
Anyway the secretwas so gripping. I absolutely love it from start to finish. I enjoyed the different characters within the book but most importantly I loved following up with Imogen and Adrian I enjoy how their personal lives intertwine with the storyline. I Espically liked finding out more about Imogens past as her past comes back to haunt her.
The premise of the book is about a police officer who gets kidnap who had been working undercover as a prostitute. Bridget storyline is amazing and insightful into what it's like to be kidnapped and confused at the same time.
Adrains story line becomes really interesting however it's left on a cliff hunger luckily I had The Angel ready to go next.

Deliciously complicated & a gripping read

I thoroughly enjoyed The Teacher so I was really excited when I bought The Secret. The Teacher mostly delved into Adrian's past so it was really great how The Secret exposed Imogen's story and how she came by the scar on her stomach. The relationship between Adrian and Imogen was not as humorous as in The Teacher but there were still some moments that made me smile. The plot was a little confusing because of its complexity but all was explained and revealed, resulting in a truly stunned reaction. Brutality and sickness are understatements to describe some of the characters in this book and at times, I grimaced as I read the detailed and vivid descriptions. The end of The Secret seems to be left open for another instalment and I really hope there will be one; the story does not yet appear finished.

I would recommend this novel and its predecessor for those who like tricky, gruesome but brilliant crime thrillers.

I like Katrina’s style of writing. In her books she has several story threads and timelines that join up eventually making the story reach an interesting conclusion. Her characters become very real to the reader. Her story lines can be quite gruelling and you wonder how a woman Writer can be so explicitly descriptive! The Secret is a great story.
I love the characters the detectives Adrian and and Imogen. They have, built up a trust in one another by the case in this book The Secret, which the reader understands. Katrina’s books are real page turners keeping the reader enthralled in the story until the very end of the book. I highly recommend these Detective Thrillers, whether you read one book all them all. They are a very addictive read.

To keep my focus to the end of a book, I need to be entertained and pushed to my emotional limits. I want a Luther experience, rather than Rosemary & Thyme (although they are cute in their own way!).
Katerina delivers a gritty plot with many characters each with their own agenda. Imogen Grey, the main character, has her demons to face here in Book 2 and although I’ve not read Book 1, I followed the clues as they were laid before me and ultimately found out what she’d endured two years earlier.
Graphic descriptions, brilliantly penned. The world of corruption within the system. Who CAN you trust?
I shall definitely read more by this author

I absolutely loved this book! I couldn't put it down, not even for a minute.

I first read The Teacher a couple years ago and loved that too....why did it take me so long to read this, I have no idea!

We once again meet Imogen Grey, and this story tells us more about her past. The story is set in both the past and the present, and is so incredibly well written. The stories from the past and the present keep you turning the pages to find out how they will link together. The ending has most definitely set us up nicely into the third book - which I cannot wait to read.

A well deserved five stars

This is the second book in the DS Adrian Miles and DS Imogen Grey series. It’s starts with 3 gruesome murders and the chasing of an undercover police officer. The storyline zips between two years ago and links to the awful injuries that Grey received then and to the present day. There were occasions where it was a bit confusing but those issues resolved themselves as the plot unfolded. I think with this series it’s important to read them in order as there are so many crossovers from one to the other. I really like the two main characters and there are some good minor characters too that are really interesting. I liked that we find out more about Miley’s ex wife and it’s obvious that storyline will continue into the next book. We also learn who Imogen’s father is and I’m sure that be picked up where book 2 left off. Whilst I most certainly enjoyed the book I think at times that there’s a stretching of credulity but I definitely want to read the next one as the author has certainly left me wanting to know what happens next.

(I read this out of order as I missed it before).
I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others in the series which I thoroughly enjoyed. The skipping between three time periods and two police stations made it feel disjointed, over-complicated and difficult to follow. It does explain Grey's relationship with Kincaid and other police officers which crop up in the later books. It hasn't put me off the series and I'm not sure if reading it out of order affected my enjoyment of it.

A very disappointing ending!

Loved "The Teacher" and the characters and although grisly in places felt it was hard to put down. So when I started "The secret" I was looking forward to another gritty read, however I was just felt that it all come to a speedy flat ending, I presume another book is to continue the story. I sure as hell hope so. Can't help but feel very flat and un satisfied now I have got to the end. A bit like racing at a speed of 100mph only to have to push the car over the finishing line. I thought this book was a great read and hard to put down, but it really could have been tied up a lot better than it was, even if there is to be a follow on. It did answer a few in answered questions from the teacher however.

This is the second book I’ve read of this author and I would rate her as the best crime writer ever! Her books are certainly not for the faint hearted but so cleverly written and brilliant reads. Lots of characters and twists in this one as with the Teacher - can’t wait to read the next in the Miles/Grey partnership series. Can’t recommend this author and her books highly enough!
