4,0 su 5 stelleGripping and accurate but the police is unbelievably dumb
Recensito in Italia 🇮🇹 il 3 ottobre 2016
Gripping detective story of the serial killer type. Characters are accurately portrayed and the plot is well paced and unpredictable. The downs are the police dumbly overlooks the basics of fiction investigation, and some questions about the murder circumstances are left unanswered. As to the language, it's simple enough for the non English mother tongue reader. It is also measured for the usually too wordy English writers. Definitely a best buy for ,99 euros, can be well worth up to 5 or 6 euros. Recommended

3,0 su 5 stelleNot bad, with some reservations
Recensito in Italia 🇮🇹 il 10 agosto 2016
Not bad, although sometimes I found it too much linear, especially in the first half (which is essentially a very classic police story, with the problematic cop who believes herself out of the society - suggesting that for this she is more interesting than other people - and continuous 'cop vs boss' and 'wandering in taverns' scenes).
It contains a little too many clichès for my taste (for example the sentence with which the murderer explain why it/she/he has committed all its/his/her actions).
Some step a little bit contrived to make move on to the story.
Anyway, the last part is really addictive and enjoyable.

1,0 su 5 stelle Employ a proofreader and avoid stupid mistakes if the writer can't be bothered to do it himself
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 14 marzo 2018

Why on earth didn't the author do some basic simple editing and fact checking? Some basic advice on 'how not to put five adjectives into every sentence' would have been helpful too. Because one family are supposedly 'posh' the author invents non existent statuses, non existent titles and imagined made up forms of address. Because in every single case they're wrong, due to laziness on is part, the plot and every other supposedly factual statement about the setting in London is not worth bothering about either. If the author doesn't care enough to google things, why should his readers give a damn either?

Two major characters are supposedly a Labour peer (who is supposed to be a member of the House of Lords), and his wife. The author can't be bothered to find out that anyone called 'Sir' anything isn't a peer, and isn't a baron. He mixes everything up, so 'Sir' Simon Douglas-Brown, who should in any real life political story would correctly be caleld 'Sir Simon', and his wife who should be 'Lady Douglas-Brown' jump around from being 'Sir Douglas-Brown' (no such form of address, and would just be a knight, not a peer or baron, ie Lord), to 'Sir Simon', to 'the Sir Douglas-Brown', to 'Sir Douglas'.

Make your mind up, it's quite easy to find out what he should be called, if you'd settle on one title, and stick with it. As being called 'Sir/the Sir/baron/lord/peer/any other random word the author has vaguely heard of, is some major character point, it's worth choosing one title, one order of rank, and sticking with it, and making sure it's correct on say - google?

He's then apparently knighted, which makes him 'Sir' but here he's magically 'Baron Douglas-Brown of X', which would mean he should have been Lord Douglas-Brown all along. The wife gets similarly invented and random titles all mixed up, as Lady Sarah [wrong], Lady Sarah Douglas-Brown, (wrong as well), instead of Lady Douglas-Brown (if her husband was knighted, but as the author doesn't care, why should anyone else).

In view of the nonsense about titles, which are supposedly so significant with how the investigation is treated, it's no wonder the accuracy of the geography of London, police procedure etc isn't worth paying any attention to. If the author can't be bothered to get anyone to proof read this mess, and remove half the superflous adjectives, it's not worth reading.

1,0 su 5 stelle A slow and boring botched attempt at a formulaic whodunnit

I can understand how some readers may have found this book to be sufficiently entertaining for their tastes; what I can't understand is how so many of them actually think that this was a really good book, and one worth recommending. It was poorly plotted, poorly paced, and the characters and dialogue were supremely annoying and absurd. Many reviewers tell you that they couldn't figure out who the killer was until near the very end -- what they don't mention is that the author doesn't even start to give many useful clues until 2/3 of the way into the book. The crime is solved not because the protagonist makes any brilliant deductions, rather, the crime is solved because basic detective work (searching the victim's home, pulling financial records) finally begins to happen in the book's final chapters, which uncovers the incriminating evidence in the book's final pages. And these readers could have figured out who the killer was likely to be much earlier in the story just by using simple process of elimination. There were so few suspects, and the author was so clumsy with his clues, that it was easy to narrow down who the killer had to be, even without yet possessing any of the basic evidence that you'd expect to have been uncovered in the first stages of the investigation. Detective Foster makes inexplicably poor use of the information that she does find, though, and she wastes a good amount of time thinking that the killer is the victim's sister, despite having already learned that the killer is a serial rapist...?!?!? I wish I could say that that was some sort of a low point for her in this book, but it's actually a pretty fair portrayal of her overall ineptitude from start to finish. I fear I've rambled on too much without even touching upon how the fist half of the book consists mostly of characters with no social skills engaging in shouting matches for no real reason, and how they always behave exactly as necessary to transparently advance Foster's character arc (which somehow never even finished by the end of the book, although the author may think it did), despite those behaviors usually being approximately the opposite of how a real person would behave in their shoes. This book really just felt to me like someone trying to imitate things they've seen in other books without understanding what they're doing, and rushing to publication. It's not a good mystery, and it's not a good book.

1,0 su 5 stelle so poorly written

The characters are just…bizarre. Abrasive for no reason to the point where most of them seem to have personality disorders. Story was both poorly fleshed out and predictable, somehow. I read this for free and still felt like I overpaid.

1,0 su 5 stelle Waste of a Time!

I simply can't believe the positive reviews this book has gotten! The only suspense I got was in wondering how long it would take me to plod through this horribly constructed story to reach the conclusion. Aside from that, this would hardly qualify as a nail biter. The "action" (and I use the description loosely) was characterized by a stilted series of ill-advised, ill-timed, and illogical events. There wasn't a thread that the reader could grab onto to help build the anticipation for where the story was going. The story is so badly constructed that the reader has no clue where it's headed, not because the writer is building suspense incorporating masterful plot twists, but because the story doesn't make any sense. The writer uses the main character's "gut instinct" to explain away improbable leaps of logic and irrational behavior. Speaking of irrational, the main character DCI Erika Foster is irrational, impetuous, and brash to the point of being unprofessional. She seems to be mischaracterized as a star Detective, which is baffling because she has zero finesse and no aptitude for strategic thinking. Her horrible decision-making skills are sometimes laughable. Many of the other characters: Sir Simon, Marsh, and Oakley are two dimensional, stereotypical, caricatures which makes it hard for the reader to get invested. Moss is an exception and she's a pleasant surprise as a more fleshed out character who's not as fuzzy around the edges as some of the others. Even DCI Foster's background is only hinted at without giving any real insight into who she is as a person, this lack of insight does nothing to help her likability. Between the poorly defined characters and the stilted pace of this slow moving "thriller" I won't be reading the next book in the series.

I found Robert Bryndza's style of writing very unpleasant. A combination of casual sexism and the over use of adjectives was very wearing. Female characters constantly described by physical (and generally sexual) attributes was particularly dull: victim described in a photo as having "full breasts" - breast feeding was she?? Lazy and dated I'm afraid.

Also the descriptions of the Police CID was obviously poorly (if at all) researched. There is no rank in any British police force of "detective", it is always "detective constable" or "DC", I suggest that Mr Bryndza either speaks to a police officer, reads better researched books or watches "The Bill" to improve things.
Perhaps the book improved after the first couple of chapters but I couldn't bear to read any more.
Mr Bryndza's efforts were perhaps all the more disappointing to me as I had just finished the peerless John Le Carre's "The Night Manager" and Anne Cleaves' "Raven Black" which are beautifully written, well researched and plausible.

1,0 su 5 stelle Overall I was disappointed with this book

I love to read and am always trying to find new authors . However this book was so disappointing. I really wanted to like it but struggle to finish it. Although I was actually surprised at the end. This felt more like a lack of clues than really good writing. I found myself not like a large number of the main characters.
This book feels as if the author is trying to set up characters for a series of books by giving the main character a sad and dark past. The problem is that to really get people interested in reading a new series the character also has to be likable. I did not find that to be the case with Erika. Although you have a little sympathy for her situation, the death of her husband, you also feel that she is not a strong person. When I read a book with a female lead I am looking for a character I would want to be like. Erika is not someone I would ever emulate.

Overall I was disappointed with this book. And sorry that I had spent any of my money to buy it. The only positive was the low kindle price.

Really struggling with this one. Police are trained to deal with victim's loved ones with sensitivity. Telling the victims fiancé that she was attacked in a 'prolonged and brutal attack'? I don't think so somehow. What nonsense. Poorly written by someone who I suspect gets their knowledge about murder investigations from CSI. The conversations between characters as well? Who talks like that? So wooden. Erika is a boring character. I usually am intrigued by a protagonists back story but I'm having difficulty giving a damn what happened to her. Also, her fiancee who runs an events management company saying he wouldn't marry a girl who would partake in such an unnatural act as anal? Come on?! What century is this set in? How old is this author? Completely unbelievable that an events manager in central London surrounded by beautiful skinny models would be a good Catholic boy. Just plain silly.

1,0 su 5 stelle Sloppy research
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 22 aprile 2020

Yes. The plot was quite absorbing but as other reviewers have said the likelihood of heroine Erika being given the promotions and breaks are so remote that it undermined any claim of this being a police procedural. There is some sloppy writing and appalling research. A key character is a peer called Simon Douglas-Brown. He is a member of the House of Lords. So a baron. Even if you are not fussy about titles you might work out he is Lord not Sir yet he is repeatedly referred to as Sir Douglas-Brown. And if he were a knight rather than a peer, he would be Sir Simon. Anyone heard of Sir Churchill? I assume that this book was not professionally edited.

1,0 su 5 stelle Rubbish. Rubbish. Rubbish. Rubbish. Rubbish

All right, I admit I came to this book after two magnificent reads and then two very bad ones. But this was dreadful. If you're going to claim to be British, and you're going to write a book set in the UK, then try to get the simple little details right. Someone with a knighthood is not addressed or referred to by "Sir" and then his surname. It's Sir Christian Name and the surname may or may not even be mentioned. That's on about page 6 and from there it gets worse. A semiliterate book written by an ignorant author, who should take this book and stick it where it's always dark and sometimes malodorous. Rubbish. An utter waste of money and - infinitely worse - of time.
