John Wilson and the BBC Philharmonic take on Copland's most famous works with gusto. That is both a good thing and a bad thing. For example, the beginning of Fanfare for a Common Man has an added percussion segment that I've not heard before in any recording of the piece. It is very loud and includes a gong which sounds out of place to me. When the brass finally do emerge they are suppressed in comparison to the loud percussion. It is out of balance and the tempo is dreadfully slow. If you are buying this disc for the Fanfare, you might want to pass.

The other compositions are mostly well crafted, especially Appalachian Spring. Although I believe a bit too much artistic license was taken on the 4 Rodeo selections. The tone is harsh at times, and too staccato. It is disjointed and doesn't flow well.

I would give the recording quality (engineering) a B+. The recording is clean, due to the all digital 24 bit / 96 kHz process. Although, since I purchased this album in SACD format, I was disappointed to learn that it was not captured in DSD format to begin with. But that is not the reason for the B+. As is found in many, if not most orchestral recordings, the wind sections sound as if the microphone is 100 feet away from the players. The full timbre of the instruments is not captured here, which is a shame. On the flip side, the soundstage and separation is robust and well crafted.

Ultimately, I don't think the performance quite measures up to the 1961 recording of Leonard Berntstein leading the New York Philharmonic in these works. While the BBC version is cleaner from an audio perspective, the older New York version is simply a stellar performance.

5,0 su 5 stelle This is simply a wonderful CD

Heavens, this is a wonderful CD. The recording standard is extraordinary, spacious yet highly detailed, so listening to the Fanfare made me think of a very different outdoor masterpiece, Messiaen’s Et Exspecto Resurrectionem Mortuorum. I’ve simply never heard a more moving, uplifting and spine-tingling performance of the Fanfare.

John Wilson’s care in phrasing is remarkable. He is rightly celebrated for his Proms performances of American film scores, and Copland not only wrote a lot of film music but – in the pieces on this CD – inspired pretty much every other film composer. Here every phrase seems natural, unrushed, expressive and beautiful even in the ‘riotous’ passages. Particularly impressive is the way Wilson layers dynamic levels – too many conductors of these pieces tend to play either ‘quiet’ or ‘loud and fast’ (listen for example to Zubin Mehta’s Decca recording of the Fanfare and Appalachian Spring), but Wilson attends to balancing different levels, and makes sure crescendos and diminuendos can be heard clearly.

This is of course very rhythmically exciting music, and the members of the BBC Phil play with really superb control and synchronisation. It’s a great pleasure to have a modern recording of El Salon Mexico that as a performance is as thrilling and satisfying as Leonard Bernstein’s famous one.

It’s perhaps easy to take this wonderful music for granted, because it’s so accessible and well-known. So I was very moved to find the sleeve note includes a quote from Bernstein, who wrote to Copland after conducting the Suite from Appalachian Spring in 1946, saying that studying the score gave him great personal comfort, because he could absorb “that fantastic stability of yours, that deep serenity; it is really amazing how the clouds lift with that last page.”

These performances have immediately become my co-favourites, with the qualification that Appalachian Spring really should be heard in its entirety and the finest recording of the complete score is that by Michael Tilson Thomas with the San Francisco Symphony, whose totally idiomatic Billy the Kid and Rodeo suites (RCA, 1999) are the equal of John Wilson’s. But even to make that comparison should convey how brilliant this new CD is.

5,0 su 5 stelle Greatest hits of Copland with some lovely interpretations. In particular, Fanfare, Salon, and Rodeo are well done!

I've been on a bit of a Copland kick of late, buying over a dozen different CDs of his music (which I've always enjoyed, but wanted to get into more deeply). So, I've been looking for the less-common Copland works, but never pass up a decent recording of some of my favorites, either. This Chandos CD is more a "greatest hits" than most, with pretty much every well-known Copland piece available here.

The Chandos recording is solid, with nice dynamics, solid bass (the bass drum thwacks are rendered quite feelingly through subs!), and good soundstaging. As with many recent Chandos albums, there's nothing to complain about with the recording. This is an SACD disc, too, with the extra resolution available through SACD noticeable when played back-to-back with the regular CD version. There's also multi-channel signals here, for those with surround sound playback, although I usually listen in stereo.

The CD opens with Fanfare, a piece everyone recognizes, and it's well done by Wilson and the BBC Philharmonic although it's quite a bit slower than many versions on the market. Of late, I've heard many versions of Fanfare, some better than others, and I like what the BBCP has done here although I suspect some people won't like the more sedate pacing taken! Fanfare is followed by a rousing El Salon Mexico, then the suites from Billy the Kid, Appalachian Spring, then Rodeo (which again has tracks everyone recognizes). It really is a "greatest hits" CD for Copland, but it's well done, lovely to listen to, and an easy high recommendation for those looking to add Copland to their library, or to get one of the better Fanfare's on CD.

5,0 su 5 stelle Classic Copland
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 15 marzo 2016

Having distinguished himself in several musical genres, including vintage Hollywood film scores and British light music, John Wilson has turned his attention to one of the great 20th century American composers, Aaron Copland. This is evidently the first in a series of discs featuring his music. It comprises what are arguably his five most popular works and whilst, so to speak, putting all of Copland's best eggs in one basket (rather than including, say, 'Quiet City' or the Clarinet Concerto) is understandable, a mix of genres might have been advantageous in demonstrating the composer's range. That said, these are truly superlative performances recorded with the BBC Philharmonic in the most sumptuous of sound. Wilson is totally successful in bringing out the subtleties of these marvellous scores, in terms of mood, rhythm, dynamics and instrumental colour. In the Suite from 'Billy the Kid', for example, the trumpet solo in 'Prairie Night' is magical and the percussive rat-tat-tat in the following 'Gun Battle' is highly impressive. But the quieter passages are equally persuasive : 'Corral Nocturne' and 'Saturday Night Waltz', the second and third of the Four Dance Episodes from 'Rodeo' are beautifully fashioned. The ubiquitous 'Fanfare For The Common Man' uses the original scoring for brass and percussion. With a total playing time of nearly 80 minutes this disc could not be more recommendable.

5,0 su 5 stelle Great sound and playing serve Copland well
Recensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 9 ottobre 2016

This 2015 Chandos recording of Copland favorites: Fanfare for the Common Man, Billy the Kid, El Salon Mexico, Appalachian Spring, and Rodeo (4 Dance episodes) has terrific sound and playing by the BBC Philharmonic. If conductor John Wilson doesn't have quite the same electricity as did Leonard Bernstein in his 1959-61 Columbia (now Sony) recordings, the sound and playing are so fine it doesn't matter.

This is a disc I listen to with great confidence, and just luxuriate in the beautiful sound. Either SACD Surround or basic stereo sound great; your preference.

Although there are other great recordings of these works by Bernstein (Sony); Ormandy/Philadelphia (RCA/ App spr. and Billy); Donald Johanos/Dallas (Vox/ Billy and Rodeo); Copland/LSO (CBS); Dorati/LSO (Mercury: Billy, App Spr.) ; and Dorati / Detroit (London/ Rodeo) sound puts this CD in a different class of it's own.

For the complete Rodeo and Billy the Kid in great SACD sound : Andrew Litton/ Colorado Symphony (BIS). I recommend this disc wholeheartedly!

5,0 su 5 stelle Excellent Copland Favorites in SACD
Recensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 22 aprile 2016

This disc of Copland warhorses is excellent, even if conductor John Wilson cannot quite match Leonard Bernstein's rhythmic flair found in his classic Sony/CBS recordings. I must say that the "Fanfare for the Common Man" which starts this SACD exhibits a sonic thrill unmatched in my experience from any other recording of it, raising audiophiles hopes that the remaining works will also possess the same sonic splendor. Unfortunately, they don't quite, but they are still excellent, taking the advantage multi-channel SACD usually provides.

It should be noted that the BBC Philharmonic, particularly the brass section, has retained the same quality they had when under the leadership of Edward Gardner, although based on this disc, it's difficult to say that John Wilson is quite on the same level of artistic accomplishment as Gardner. However, Wilson does meet the interpretive challenge these popular works present, and if sound quality is important to you, you'll like this disc a lot.

5,0 su 5 stelle Copland For 'The Common Man'?
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 3 maggio 2016

This was something of a speculative buy for me - even though I am quite familiar with much of the content on the disc, thanks in large part to Leonard Bernstein's recordings of it. My expectations were not too high of this CD as a result, but I am delighted to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the vibrancy of the pieces on the disc. Familiar favourites sounded 'new', with a special mention going to the quality of the recordings, for which credit must go the recording engineers at Chandos. If this is a taste of things to come in this series, I look forward to Volume 2 with significantly higher expectations than I did for Volume 1 - and am confident that I won't be disappointed! Highly recommended.

5,0 su 5 stelle A worthy successor to Bernstein/NY Philharmonic
Recensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 24 aprile 2016
Acquisto verificato
Performance wise for me, the gold standard in this repertoire will always be Bernstein and the NY Philharmonic but this disc comes very close. Wilson and the BBC don't quite match the fire of Bernstein/NY in Rodeo and El Salon but they are still very satisfactory and in Billy the Kid I would call it a draw. Sonically, this Chandos recording surpasses everything that I've heard in this repertoire but it is not significantly better than  Appalachian Spring (Multichannel/Stereo) . My other favorite is the superb recording Morton Gould made http://www.amazon.com/Copland-Billy-Rodeo-Grofe-Canyon/dp/B000E1NWIM/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1461522154&sr=1-1&keywords=gould+copland+sacd. If I were to rank my preferences now the order would be 1) Bernstein/NY 2) Wilson/BBC closely followed by 3) Gould and his orchestra.
