A well-written thriller, but I didn't appreciate the resolution and some parts of the story. A few characters are really interesting however, and the ending isn't predictable.

The central idea of a website to promote the stalking of women commuters was initially unnerving but in the end it didn't seem to make enough sense. Why would anyone want to pay a lot of money for information about commuters' daily movements, when they could obtain that by following whoever took their fancy on the tube anyway? Nevertheless it was a page turner at times, though a little too far fetched at the end. I much preferred the author's first novel 'I let you go'.

The plot had potential, how being creatures of habit can make you vulnerable through predictability, but it was far fetched to suggest that people (men..it was always referred to as men wanting women, not that I'm a militant equality pursuer, but it did criminalise men heavily) would download commutes, going out of their way from their own commute, otherwise they'd see the female every day and know anyway?
The characters were flimsy. Zoe was a wet lettuce and the family construct dull. A further loose storyline was Kelly and the demotion to the transport police for throttling a rapist, but even more pointless was the back story of the sisters rape (different rapist), which served only to add context as to why Kelly was demoted and that sometimes victims just want to move on. Again, more demonising of men, that crimes against women are rife, it was an ever present theme that men want to rape women, the sister, Kelly working in the sex crime dept throttling rapist, a rapist being captured as part of the investigation, Katie the daughter being set up to be raped and murdered within minutes of a profile release like all rapist and murderers wait by a laptop to be lured, broad daylight included.
The ending was farcical and things had picked up by then with lots of possible suspects for the bad guy, so a shame. The biggest moment of farce was Zoe paying £1000 on the ex's credit card to see the website for herself. Why pick the platinum package just to see first hand that you are on a website?

The reason behind the website would have been plausible as a money making racket, but all of the explanation around adding the daughter Katie because she always wanted to be centre of attention was again weakly offered as a reason. And the cat n mouse chase, hacking of cctv and putting the daughters profile out there meaning instantly rapist and murderers would go after her was ridiculous, and by then I felt my intelligence being insulted. Two stars for the idea of being watched, and how predictability does make us create patterns that can be exploited, and the writing style is good - pacy and descriptive. Three stars lost for veering into farce and offering characters with nothing robust meaning I cared little what happened to Katie in the cupboard!

Can’t believe I finished it. Only did so because I was on holiday with no access to anything else to read. Cliched and predictable with a cast of characters I cared not a jot for. The ending was a tad insulting, however I can’t really explain this without giving the “villain” away. Really wouldn’t bother though.

I'm starting to develop a thing for murder/crime thrillers. Like a good thing. I don't read them very often, but when I do, I always end up obsessed with the crime and unable to put the book down. Well, that is unless the book is super boring, and I can't stand any of the characters, which was how I felt with Jo Nesbo's "The Snowman" (I can't believe they made that book into a film!) - but I digress.

I tend to go into these books with some trepidation, because I don't know whether I'll be completely taken by it or unable to finish them. I'm very pleased to say that Clare Mackintosh was able to make me think nonstop about this book! Seriously. When I put the book down, I was itching to pick it back up and find out what happens next. My husband was going crazy, because I was paying no attention to the children, and sneaking off to read another chapter of the book instead. I honestly could not stop thinking about it. I kept wanting to read more.

The thing is, it wasn't in any way a genius take on thriller-crime fiction. It didn't have like a fantastic twist or an incredible plot line, so my only conclusion is that Clare Mackintosh must be a great writer, because even though it wasn't the most creative story and it actually did have a lot of loopholes, she was still able to completely suck me in because of the way she told it. That's something. It's enough for me to want to read her other books.

The reason I gave it 4 stars was because the ending was a little...too much? Like it ends, and you think it's over, but then it ends AGAIN. On a cliffhanger of sorts. Like an open-ended conclusion that makes you wonder whether she'll make this into a series. And I was disappointed that it ended the way it did...I was disappointed that the true culprit turned out to be who it was, and the reasons behind committing the crimes were just...silly. Unbelievable. Not very credible. I mean, it was almost immature in its nature, and that disappointed me. If it does turn into a series, I don't know that I'll want to follow that story, but I would want to pick up other books by Clare Mackintosh.

I heard a lot about I Let You Go. So maybe that'll be my next read for her.

Highly unlikely and improbable plot. Who would pay to get details of a woman's daily commute?? You could just follow any random woman from a train or tube.... ridiculous. The denouement was dire. I couldn't warm to any of the characters, all self absorbed and one-dimensional. Especially Zoe, what a whining, boring, pathetic woman! I can't believe it had such great reviews. Would not recommend.
