Good ... but

The market has been drenched with books that promise you a twist you'll never see coming yet often leave you wondering what it was! The 'twist' in this one is evident from the word go and you're well aware of whose viewpoint you're reading from. However, if you take that away and just follow the plot you'll find decently written characters whose development you're genuinely interested in. I liked the fact that the 'baddie', who we're introduced to later, is in the first person too which provides for a well-written dark and twisty insight into a character, who is paramount to the story. Some cliches make you groan. But they're realistic all the same. There's no need for the final 'twist'. Its far too neat and, in my view, the baddie was already so vile that it would have had more impact if there had been no link between them and the victim. This character needs no reason to behave the way they do. Overall, a good effort with some great moments, sadly let down by the promise of a shattering revelation that doesn't deliver.

Writing indifferent. Plot holds interest

This is my first acquaintance with Clare Mackintosh. After a rather common place opening the narrative picks up steam and the central character, however irritating, becomes credible , at times absorbing. However, it is the plot that gives the novel its compelling quality as the tension is ratcheted up towards the end. Unfortunately, the "celebrated" twist at the end is only achieved by sacrificing plausibility. It is hideously contrived. The relationship between DI Ray Stevens and his wife is notably more convincing than that between Stevens and Helen and the mawkishly sentimental relationship between Jenna and her vet. On one point I must disagree strongly with some of the negative reviews. The violence is not gratuitous. Yes, it is thoroughly unpleasant, but then many women do suffer the kind of abuse introduced here. it is no bad thing that we are confronted by the harsh reality of it. For me, it is a solid 3, edging towards 4 were it not for the faults I have allude to above. It would be good to encounter a crime writer who knows what 'disinterested' means - here we have another offender.
Overall a decent enough page-turning thriller, but nothing that is really original or outstanding.

I'm surprised that this book was written by an ex police officer because the incompetence of the investigation was astounding, and their neglect of their chief witness, the boy's mother, which allowed her to disappear with untreated injuries was beyond belief. The first twist in the plot was OK - I didn't see that coming, but the second brought the plot beyond the realms of plausibility. There were also a lot of loose ends, for instance, the car - didn't the police need to find that? Why were they happy to accept the story from somebody who had already lied to the police, and release them from custody to pursue another suspect?

The three stars are a little generous. It was an ok read but no more. The characters, all of them, were pretty shallow and unbelievable and the plot so predictable. Yes there was a surprising twist part way through but the ending was obvious from a long way out. The attitude of the main character was a little silly, almost ridiculous and it is hard to believe that anyone would take this course of action in real life. But then ok this is a novel and there has to be some poetic licence. The relationships are extremely cliched and therefore not particularly interesting. What bugs me most of all though, and what makes the story so unbelievable, is the character of the villain. Why oh why is it that the baddy so often has no redeeming features at all? Utterly evil. Utterly unbelievable. Utterly unrealistic. I was interested enough to make it to the end although the ending was entirely predictable. In an attempt to be fair, I have read much worse books hence the three stars, but this was not in my opinion up there with the best.

An interesting introduction to Clare MacIntosh's literary career with three stories being told concurrently, which to me perhaps gave the game away to early, despite the late twist in the story. But I think I had already guessed by then what the outcome was and why. It would be a spoiler to say more than that. Her police background obviously comes through in her writing.
In time I will read more of her books and see how much I enjoy them.

I read Mackintosh's second novel 'I See You' first and was impressed enough to try a second, but I found this a bit disappointing.
For one thing, one character is so nasty (perhaps unnecessarily so??) that I had to put the book down for a couple of days as I found it so unpleasant. The passages describing the main character's move to Wales are well described and evocative, but I found the plot twists a little unbelievable and was thoroughly unimpressed with the ending.

i can say with conviction, I never saw that coming ! Not to give too much away, i did a back flip to a few pages to read again and thought, 'oh nice twist or two'.i won't describe the plot just my review; I began by not enjoying the book, because of the cliches;a fiery passion,a wave of nausea, droplets of tears that burst as they hit her knee'. Eh ? Beating pulse, spinning rooms. I want to say, 'we get it. Don't describe every breath'.But the story picks up with the conversation between the police officers, which the author is familiar with and it shows, the view point from the husband of the main character, really creepy and very strong, which I imagine the author is familiar with as an ex cop and the twists, terrific. The love interest in the handsome vet was good too. Just what let it down was the thoughts and dialogue from Jenna. the main character of the plot. Maybe not a book for me, but it is not such a bad read because of the really very good twists.

First 20 pages of the book fell out! Page turner?

I'm careful with paperbacks as I love the feel of reading a new book for the first time but, this one … was so hard to read in bed as the first 20 pages fell apart! Anyway, I managed to read a further 40 pages without incident which were very encouraging so will read this to the end.
Update - I've now finished the book & thought it very ordinary in the end. I became bored when the 'love interest' turned up and then very bored when the twist was revealed. Shame as was obvious,

I did eventually get into this book but it took such a long time. I feel that the first half, before the first big reveal, could have been much much shorter. Also the writing style was quite basic and all the characters felt like something out of an ITV drama, particularly the police. Having said that, once I decided to stick with it the story did get interesting and very dark. There was I believe one too many twists in the plot, (so as not to give it away I will just say it concerns the paternity of the dead boy!) This was absurdly contrived and the story just didn't need it so close to the end. Ray's son's subplot was also an unnecessary distraction. I've given it three stars out of five but if there was a star rating for quality of storyline then I would have been more generous!

First half is a bit slow and gets a bit too Mills and Boon-y for my liking. Then the twist which I did not see coming and was an almost physical shock. Very well done. Then the book starts a different tale which was quite well written and very topical at the moment - the psychological, emotional and mental abuse of a partner. However it got a bit overly dramatic at the end and it was easy to see what was coming. So overall, not bad and the twist is good but there are better examples of this genre.
