Semplice trama ...per un non semplice romanzo. Dowd ci offre un punto di osservazione inusuale per la vicenda drammatica che anima il suo testo: la scomparsa al London Eye del cugino del protagonista, un bambino con disturbi dello spettro autistico.
E sarà grazie a lui ed alla sua particolare modalità di pensiero che il cugino verrà ritrovato.
Un elogio della diversità? Assolutamente no.
Piuttosto un forte incoraggiamento al sapersi aprire verso quelle persone che non sono esattamente come ci aspettiamo che siano. E che percepiamo come chiuse.
Ma siamo noi a dover aprire gli occhi!
Grazie Siobhan, per questo e per gli altri tuoi libri...sei mancata troppo presto.

Good young adult and middle grade mysteries are sometimes hard to come by. THE LONDON EYE MYSTERY by Siobhan Dowd is one you won't want to miss.

It all starts when Ted's cousin, Salim, comes to visit. Salim and his mother are about to move to New York City and have planned a family visit in London before their departure. Of course, what is a visit to London without a ride on the London Eye? That's when the trouble begins.

Ted and his older sister, Kat, haven't seen much of their cousin in the past. The visit starts out on a wrong note because of the unusual sleeping arrangements required by their tiny house. Kat is unhappy about bunking on the couch, and Ted is unhappy with the disruption of his whole routine. As Ted explains, he suffers from a "syndrome," which he defines by stating that his brain runs on "a different operating system" than everyone else. His judgment of other people's emotional responses is a bit off, and his views of the world around him tend to be quite literal. (I'm guessing that he suffers from some form of autism.)

Salim turns out to be quite a pleasant visitor. His only request is to take a ride on the London Eye, a massive ferris wheel attraction in the center of London. When the cousins and their mothers arrive at the Eye, they find the ticket line and actual ride line disappointingly long. Relief comes when a stranger offers one ticket, free of charge, to Salim. Ted and Kat eagerly accept the ticket and pocket the original ticket money from their mother as they rush Salim to the waiting ride.

The mystery begins when Salim doesn't disembark from the London Eye at the conclusion of his ride. Ted and Kat have as many as nine different theories. Was he kidnapped? Did he actually go on the ride at all? How could he have vanished so completely?

Quirky characters, London scenery, and a who-dun-it style combine to make this a sure hit. The late Siobhan Dowd, author of A SWIFT PURE CRY, outdid herself once again.

There are lots of mysteries for younger readers out there that play fast and loose with basic mystery conventions, and there are more and more books that feature Asperger's heroes, again playing a bit fast and loose with clinical details. This book succeeded with me because it does a better job than most on both scores.

The mystery is of the locked room variety. Our sibling heroes Ted and Kat sift through different theories, investigate, follow clues, and have adventures tailing and questioning witnesses and suspects. There are some shortcuts taken and a few lucky hunches, but this sticks closely enough to the fair side of mystery solving that I would expect most readers to be satisfied. And, for a younger reader's mystery book this struck me as definitely superior. It doesn't have the cheats, (overheard conversations, wild guesses and hunches, clues appearing in dreams, etc.), that mar lots of junior efforts.

As to the heroes, I thought the author caught the general sense of Asperger's well enough. Ted sort of drifts in and out of the condition as the plot, narrative, and pacing require, so this isn't terribly rigorous. On the other hand it gives a fair sense of Ted being differently abled, and for a younger read I was happy with that. Ted is such a cheerful, honest and amiable companion that that shines through no matter where you come out on the Asperger's. It helps that sister Kat is also well fleshed out. Sometimes books like this revolve so much around the Ted-character that everyone else pales. Here, Kat is a real player in the narrative. Indeed, even the missing boy's parents, Ted's parents, and the police inspectors get to be characters of some weight, so you also get family drama and suspense, which adds variety and fullness to the tale.

This is a bit longish but I was surprised at the fast pace that was maintained. Scenes change quickly and the investigation progresses apace, with a nice balance of action bits and thinking about the case. It felt like this would be an attention holder.

So, I imagine that declaring that a book is better than expected seems like faint praise, so let me be clear that I thought this was a top drawer young reader mystery and an entertaining find.

What intrigue, fun, and amazing depth in The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd! What's the book about? Aunt Gloria and her son, Salim, come to London to say goodbye to Ted and Kat's family before heading for a new life in New York. The sisters and kids decide to take in a final day of sightseeing. Salim ends up on the Eye by himself but he never gets off! What happened to Salim?

Told in first person point-of-view by Ted, a 12 year old on the autism spectrum, this book is a gem for many reasons. As a read-aloud or for kids in upper elementary and older, this book is loaded with enough material to satisfy readers and teachers alike. All the characters in the book are well-developed. Themes abound. The clues are intriguing, the mystery is a real page turner, and the shattering reality of a missing kid is not glossed over.

The portrayal of the thoughts and actions of a kiddo on the autism spectrum is a primary accomplishment of this book. Seriously, that is no mean feat. Ted talks to us about his brain with its different operating system, relates his never-ending and complex thoughts on weather systems, and lets us know when he's stressed, including habitual hand shaking and occasional banging and kicking walls. Poor Ted. I'd bang walls in his position, too. If ONLY his family would listen to Ted!

Ted's sister, Kat, is a tweener in rebellion against her mum, secretly smoking and often lying, and cursing several times in the book. While reading this aloud, I left out most of those words. On the other hand, I appreciate the author's authentic description of Kat's struggle to find her way while grappling with agonizing guilt over Salim's disappearance.

As a special ed teacher, I'd use this book to develop empathy among neurotypical learners for those whose brain are on IOS-Autism. Kids on the spectrum are at risk for bullying and this book would be a terrific tool for countering those prejudices. The London Eye Mystery could also validate kids who have been made aware of their diagnosis of ASD.
I was grieved to discover that Siobhan Dowd passed away in 2007 at the age of 47. She had devoted much of her life's energy to "tak[ing] stories to children and young people without stories." In the days before her death, she established The Siobhan Dowd Trust, a worthwhile project to supply books to those who otherwise couldn't access them. Siobhan Dowd definitely achieved her goal of giving a voice to kiddos like Ted. I encourage you to read the book and check out her foundation, where all royalties and funds from overseas sales provide hope for the voiceless.

Es hat seine Vorteile, wenn man anfängt, Bücherlisten nach bestimmten "tags" anzulegen, in diesem Fall nach meiner Lieblings-Metropole London. Sonst hätte ich wahrscheinlich nicht nach einem Buch mit einem Titel wie diesem gesucht, der irgendwie an Enid Blyton erinnert.
Und das wäre sehr schade gewesen. Dieser Roman, eigentlich mit der Zielgruppe 10-14 (möchte ich mal annehmen), ist auch für ältere Leser ein Gewinn. Zum einen ist der Plot schon mal wirklich spannend: ein Junge, zu Besuch bei Londoner Verwandten, besteigt eine Kapsel der Touristenattraktion "London Eye", diesem Riesen-Riesenrad, das einen unvergleichlichen Blick über London gewährt - und kommt nicht wieder zurück. Wie kann nun bitte jemand mitten in der Luft aus einer geschlossenen Gondel verschwinden?
Hier kommt nun der geniale Zug von Siobhan Dowds Roman ins Spiel: sie erzählt die mysteriöse Geschichte zwar aus der Sicht eines Protagonisten, jedoch durch dessen Reflektion über das Verhalten der Menschen um ihm herum, aus zwei unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Die Erwachsenen, die Eltern und Verwandten des verschwundenen Jungen, zeigen alle verzweifelten Reaktionen im Falle eines vermissten Kindes und handeln entsprechend (Einschaltung der Polizei, Fernsehanfrage), ohne der schieren physischen Unmöglichkeit dieses Verschwindens Rechnung zu tragen. Anders der zwölfjährige Ted, der das Asperger- Syndrom hat. Die Tatsache, dass Emotionen für ihn ein schwer zugänglicher Nebenbereich sind, lässt ihn rein logisch vorgehen wie eine Art Mini-Holmes, den Fokus auf die reinen Tatsachen richten: sein Cousin kann nicht aus heiterem Himmel aus einer hermetisch abgeriegelten Gondel über den Dächern von London verschwunden sein. Was also dann? Mithilfe seiner Schwester Kat geht Ted dem seltsamen Vorkommnis nach.
Dies ist kein Fantasy-Roman, es ist auch kein klassischer Krimi. Man könnte sagen, es ist ein Buch über einen autistischen Jungen, der zufällig in einen nicht ganz alltäglichen Vorfall - und in eine dahintersteckende problematische Familiengeschichte - verwickelt wird, und der zunächst nicht aus Empathie, sondern aus intellektuellem Interesse heraus der Wahrheit auf die Spur zu kommen versucht. Die Stärke von Siobhan Dowds Erzählweise liegt in der Beschreibung kleiner zwischenmenschlicher Details, die das Verhältnis des Protagonistin zu seiner Umwelt und seinen Familienmitgliedern - die beide nur nach einem festen Schlüssel codiert werden können - sehr anschaulich schildern.
Leider ist dies das letzte Buch der Autorin, die 2008 an Krebs starb

The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd is a book about a boy and his sister who try and find their cousin, who has mysteriously vanished from the London Eye.
I enjoyed this book; it was recommended to me by a previous teacher. I decided to try reading it as it sounded really interesting. And I'm totally glad I did!
In the story, Ted's and Kat's cousin Salim wants to ride on the Eye, so they let him go in on his own. Ted and Kat track the wheel almost all the time, which, according to Ted, leaves a 2% margin for error. But what's most strange is that while what goes up, must come down, Salim does not seem to leave the Eye. After that, the police are called in, to investigate what has happened. Even they are stumped, and Kat and Ted decide to take matters into their own hands. Ted makes up a list of theories; whether obviously fantasy or real. Ted and Kat begin to investigate, and come to the conclusion that Salim either never got on... or was taken.
The ending is a bit cliche, but brilliant and very well thought out. I think you can guess the ending!
What I loved is that Ted is autistic, and it changed the perspective quite a lot. If it was from Kat's perspective, it would be very different, as Kat does not have autism e.t.c, and Kat is an extremely different person to Ted.
The negatives are a cliche ending: however, like I said, this was a well-written ending and deserves a lot of praise. I can imagine, however, a bone-chilling end to the story- it's in my head! Also, maybe there could be a little less arguing in the story, and a bit less sleeping and talking, although those parts where the bits where Ted figured out it in parts, and even though Ted's clue-finding actually lead to nothing, it was interesting how the story played out.
So if you like quirky, unusual stories, set in a real-life environment (and even if you don't) I would encourage you to give this book a try, maybe have a look at the free sample. Once you start, you will be hooked- honest! 😁😁
