This was truly something else… and I applaud the author for coming up with such a unique format.

Two apprentices working for a lawyer are tasked with the assignment to uncover the murderer of Samantha Greenwood. But how? It's simple, by checking 1400 personal e-mails and text messages from suspects, during the time before her murder.

After reading this book, I am hesitant to pursue my career as a detective because I had no idea who the killer was. Especially because each of the 15 suspects (yes, you read well) had a good reason to kill Sam. And yes, I suspected them all at one stage.

Although there isn’t any action in this book, there’s plenty of drama, and it was very interesting to have the story unfold just by reading through the correspondence.
Most of what went on outside the e-mails was left to the imagination, and to gather more information you had to read between the lines. In the end, I had all the details I needed to solve the case, but I still couldn't.

On the downside I felt the book could have been shorter. Many e-mails flew over my head… and I had no idea if they were going to be important to solving the case. It was hard to keep track of who everyone was and how they were connected, even though you get a detailed list of all the characters. It had me flipping back and forth between the pages which was time consuming.
Also, reading over 400 pages of correspondence at times felt like a chore and I craved some real interaction between the protagonists!

But it’s certainly worth picking up, if you want an Agatha Christie style thriller and fancy yourself a sleuth!

The first night I started reading this I couldn't put it down. The format meant that the reader doesn't know what, if any, crime has been committed and I was keen to find out. However, after the second session reading it I was finding the format very trying, I couldn't keep track of the huge cast of characters and was just frustrated. In the second part of the book the two people reviewing the evidence (firstly described as first year law students and then as articled clerks, so even the author was confused!) communicated like teenagers trying to be adults (or like the author trying unsuccessfully to write younger characters!) and the fact that they were involved at all was totally unbelievable. I ended up finding the book frustrating and the story, and the apparent collusion between characters, not credible in any way. After the promising start it turned into one of the worst books I have ever read and I felt that it should have had an awful lot more editing than it did, if, indeed, it had been edited at all! How it ever became the Sunday Times thriller of the year is beyond me....

What a tour de force.

This was so original. The way, even from emails and texts peoples characters are drawn. The shafts of humour. A whiff of the supernatural.

Loved it. Oh, and if you are reading this on a kindle take a couple of pictures on your phone of the 'The Fairway Players', very helpful in remembering who is who.

So many congratulations to the author.

I can’t think of a book I’ve enjoyed less. How is a reader to know what they are reading it for if so much is left to the last page. Normally a lawyer asking two people to review evidence would tell them that such and such a person was murdered on such a date, and that another named person was found guilty of the crime. The lawyer would then provide a transcript of the trial and other evidence from letters and emails for them to review. Here the reader knows nothing of the apparent crime (although I twigged the fraud very early on) until two thirds of the way through the book. Apart from that I agree totally with the worst review that there are far too many characters without even a chart at the front to remind us who is related to who. And the format of emails is completely frustrating. Many of them contain content that is utterly irrelevant. And on my kindle some pages contained more of the headings , from, subject, to, date, etc than actual content from the body of the email! I can’t fathom why so many people rave about the book. I can only think that we now live in a culture where people are reading their emails on their phones more than proper books and so this for them was heaven!!

Like the curate’s egg good in very occasional parts. But mostly like a fair isle knitting pattern with cable stitch. Too many characters, plot over complicated with characters pretending to be other characters and in the end I had lost the will to care who had done what.

I started reading Janice Hallett's The Appeal on the recommendation of a friend who told me she'd stayed up reading it until 1am because she couldn't put it down, and I have to say that I was similarly gripped.

On the face of it, The Appeal shouldn't be anything like the page-turner that it is. It's not a fast-paced thriller. There's no lurking serial killer, no police work, no espionage, no detective, none of that. For most of the book, we're reading a substantial pile of emails, text messages and press clippings relating to a provincial amateur dramatics society. These documents are part of a QC's evidence bundle for an appeal against someone's murder conviction, but we aren't even told who the supposed victim is, let alone who is is in prison.

That means it's up to us to piece together what's happened from the content and tone of the conversations available. It becomes clear that the wealthy, middle-class Hayward family, who own a local hotel and health club, are at the centre of their social circle and are the driving force behind the Fairway Players. Martin Hayward runs the group and, along with his son James, directs the shows, while his wife Helen and daughter Paige are the perennial leading ladies while everyone else is vying for the best supporting roles, both on and off stage. When Martin and Helen's two-year-old grandchild, Paige's daughter Poppy, is diagnosed with a brain tumour, their friends and hangers-on immediately form a committee to crowdfund an experimental new treatment from America.

Meanwhile, Fairway Players stalwart Issy Beck has introduced two new members to the group. Issy is a nurse on a geriatric ward and is delighted when her new colleague Sam Greenwood and her husband Kel agree to audition. Sam and Kel have just returned from volunteering in Africa with Medecins Sans Frontieres but why did they leave? And what's their connection with Poppy's doctor?
Creative writing students are often instructed to 'show, not tell' when it comes to their characters and Janice Hallett is certainly an absolute master of this. With only the characters' own words to go on, we can immediately start to build up a clear picture of each of them and of the group dynamic. Issy's excitable, over-enthusiastic and almost childlike emails have a clingy, obsessive note to them. The bossy, capable tones of Sarah-Jane McDonald, who as a former charity sector fundraising manager is naturally best placed to assume the mantle of campaign coordinator for A Cure for Poppy are spot-on - sometimes persuasive, sometimes hectoring. Martin Hayward is confidently authoritative while his son, James, takes a softer and more theatrical tone. And - importantly - what isn't said is often as revealing as what is.

Every character is acutely well-observed, as are the social interactions between them, the constant low-level battle for status within the group and the rapidity with rumours and speculation spread from one to another. It's as much a satire on the nature of certain types of social group as it is a puzzle to be solved and it is frequently very funny.

I'm sure some readers may not take to the way the story is told, or to the gossipy pettiness of so many of the characters' interactions - it has a very parish council feel to it, and there are definitely characters who would not accept that Jackie Weaver has any authority here, so you will occasionally have a strong urge to punch them. But I'm fascinated by this kind of very English, microcosmic story and while I'm delighted that I never have to spend time with these people in real life, I was delighted to observe them from afar.

4,0 su 5 stelle Clever ... A Golden Age formula presented in a millennial's format.

Rating: 4.0/5

I don't want to go into too much detail regarding the format and plot of this novel, as much of the potential for enjoyment is in discovering and experiencing that for yourself. Therefore, I will endeavour to write this review in such a way that it gives you a flavour of the book, without revealing anything too "spoilerish".

My own reaction in the opening pages was something along the lines of, "What the heck is going on here?". I didn't immediately feel at ease with the style that was being presented to me, and I was wary that I was soon going to tire and / or become irritated by it.

My fears were unfounded. Janice Hallett has certainly taken a fresh and different approach to constructing this novel, but at its heart it still has all the key components that you would expect from a classical mystery that you might associate with the likes of Agatha Christie or Arthur Conan Doyle. - "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.". You might say that "The Appeal" has a Golden Age formula, but presented in a millennial's format.

I am sure there will be some readers who find themselves unable to settle and feel at ease with the approach the author has taken, but those that do will be rewarded with a cleverly crafted piece of work that is intricately plotted and very enjoyable.

5,0 su 5 stelle Wonderful book, badly printed

The book is wonderful fun!! I was a bit hesitant about the technique the author uses but it was this that added so much to the experience! It would be impossible to film because it is a genuinely literary experience.

One major complaint, however, is about the printing. Half of the WhatsApp conversations are black type on a very dark grey background. They are virtually impossible to read! This needs to be sorted before the next printing

2,0 su 5 stelle A Good Idea Yet Patronising to The Reader
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 23 agosto 2021

I read this book in part for research into epistolary novels. It was of interest because of the use of more modern means of communication - email & text messaging. In theory, this is a good way to lay out the backstory and layout clues and some misdirection. However, even the author must have thought there was too much infomation given, because at regular intervals she had the articled lawyers discussing the communication, repeating the key details, just in case the reader hadn't already picked up on it. Twice we have a list of the very, very large cast of characters, again an admission of possible confusion.

This could have been a 3 star, despite the failings. There was ample opportunity to create a believeable tale about a miscarriage of justice using documentation. The characters were suitably annoying, so not only did I dislike them all, it is credit to the author that the voice of the characters managed to avoid even a scintilla of sympathy. The premise we are expected to believe is that an innocent person is in prison for a crime they did not commit. I worked out the crime by page 58, but the coincidences of criminality did push the boundaries of credibility. Are we to assume that the original defence team did not have access to the communication? That they would not have pursued the claims made by the victim? That they would have not approached professionals in relation to the accused and the victim? Either the accused was incredibly unfortunate with the defence team - it does happen - or it is a convenient ploy to make a story where one really doesn't exist.

I do not want to read a book and then give it low stars, however this criticism needs to be said if publishers are to discover readers opinions. It isn't always helpful to get glowing 4/5 stars, but a low rating needs to have evidence to back it. An author works hard on their book and it is upsetting when someone says it is dire - I am not saying that. It is readable, but I don't believe it deserves the acolades it is getting when there are such large plot holes.
