I loved this book so much I didn’t want it to end. So different from any other book I’ve read, very clever.

I was a little hesitant since the format is not your standard book. You read through email exchanges, texts, etc. there is no dialogue, you just have whatever the character have talked about. I ended up actually loving it a whole lot! So many twists and turns, I didn’t see most of them coming! Such a good book and I’ve already ordered her other one!

This is an absolutely belter of a book.

It starts out with a few texts and some emails, and I was enjoying this format assuming the structure of chapters, dialogue and descriptions would start soon, but they never came.

The book is entirely constructed of emails, texts, interviews, and a journal entry. You go along with Femi and Charlotte reading the evidence of correspondence which might seem strange, but I was hooked. Just one more email when they take a few seconds to read is a dangerous thing. I did my best to stick to the buddy read schedule but it was so hard!

Hallett cleverly uses the texts between Femi and Charlotte to wrap up certain parts, this is incredibly helpful as there is a lot of information and strands to this book. We are solving the crime with them, but we aren’t even told who the appeal is for. So we have to work out who has been convicted, is this correct and if not, then who is the murderer?

This book is also hilarious, from Sarah Jane’s blunt emails to Issy’s misunderstanding of how to take minutes. We even see dodgy adverts at the bottom of the emails and they never failed to make me laugh. It’s this level of detail that makes this book a spectacular read.

Have you read this? Its 5 stars for me. It might be my favourite read of the year!

5,0 su 5 stelle Clever, original satirical mystery

I started reading Janice Hallett's The Appeal on the recommendation of a friend who told me she'd stayed up reading it until 1am because she couldn't put it down, and I have to say that I was similarly gripped.

On the face of it, The Appeal shouldn't be anything like the page-turner that it is. It's not a fast-paced thriller. There's no lurking serial killer, no police work, no espionage, no detective, none of that. For most of the book, we're reading a substantial pile of emails, text messages and press clippings relating to a provincial amateur dramatics society. These documents are part of a QC's evidence bundle for an appeal against someone's murder conviction, but we aren't even told who the supposed victim is, let alone who is is in prison.

That means it's up to us to piece together what's happened from the content and tone of the conversations available. It becomes clear that the wealthy, middle-class Hayward family, who own a local hotel and health club, are at the centre of their social circle and are the driving force behind the Fairway Players. Martin Hayward runs the group and, along with his son James, directs the shows, while his wife Helen and daughter Paige are the perennial leading ladies while everyone else is vying for the best supporting roles, both on and off stage. When Martin and Helen's two-year-old grandchild, Paige's daughter Poppy, is diagnosed with a brain tumour, their friends and hangers-on immediately form a committee to crowdfund an experimental new treatment from America.

Meanwhile, Fairway Players stalwart Issy Beck has introduced two new members to the group. Issy is a nurse on a geriatric ward and is delighted when her new colleague Sam Greenwood and her husband Kel agree to audition. Sam and Kel have just returned from volunteering in Africa with Medecins Sans Frontieres but why did they leave? And what's their connection with Poppy's doctor?
Creative writing students are often instructed to 'show, not tell' when it comes to their characters and Janice Hallett is certainly an absolute master of this. With only the characters' own words to go on, we can immediately start to build up a clear picture of each of them and of the group dynamic. Issy's excitable, over-enthusiastic and almost childlike emails have a clingy, obsessive note to them. The bossy, capable tones of Sarah-Jane McDonald, who as a former charity sector fundraising manager is naturally best placed to assume the mantle of campaign coordinator for A Cure for Poppy are spot-on - sometimes persuasive, sometimes hectoring. Martin Hayward is confidently authoritative while his son, James, takes a softer and more theatrical tone. And - importantly - what isn't said is often as revealing as what is.

Every character is acutely well-observed, as are the social interactions between them, the constant low-level battle for status within the group and the rapidity with rumours and speculation spread from one to another. It's as much a satire on the nature of certain types of social group as it is a puzzle to be solved and it is frequently very funny.

I'm sure some readers may not take to the way the story is told, or to the gossipy pettiness of so many of the characters' interactions - it has a very parish council feel to it, and there are definitely characters who would not accept that Jackie Weaver has any authority here, so you will occasionally have a strong urge to punch them. But I'm fascinated by this kind of very English, microcosmic story and while I'm delighted that I never have to spend time with these people in real life, I was delighted to observe them from afar.

Really enjoyed this book. It challenges the reader in a very good way. The way the “onion” is peeled constantly challenges you to revisit your assumptions. Much fun.

5,0 su 5 stelle An enjoyable who dun what to who!

This is a great read, though it would be hard going as an audio book, due to the format. The layout reminded me of "Salmon fishing in the Yemen", as the tale is told through correspondence, and what happens is gradually pieced together by the reader. That won't suit everyone but as a union rep who puts together and takes apart cases for disciplinary hearings, this was right up my street. As a former drama group member I was also pleased to relate to all of the amateur dramatics references. (In youth I played the maid in a local production of Blithe Spirit, though I hope nothing like Issy!) At the beginning of the story two trainee lawyers started to work through the various messages and correspondence, and in their company I wondered about the who, what, why, when and how of a criminal case. Was it fraud? Blackmail? Would there be deaths? I read on kindle and did not view a synopsis or the book cover, so I had a complete lack of prior knowledge of the novel. That added an element of surprise for me that would likely be missing for other readers. I mostly ignored the character lists and just kept reading. (Woof caught my attention as a strange listing, but he was worthy of it, assisting with character insight and adding some fun.) Isabel (Issy) as a central character was deliberately made a bit tedious, and well into the story I started to skim some of her emails, but soon went back over them again. I found sympathy for some of the family and admired two other prominent characters and that also kept me reading as I unravelled most of the puzzle (though not all of the motivation). The good and the bad in human nature were well displayed in the messages, and the humour in many of them lifted some of the gloomier bits of the story and made it a lighter read. I enjoyed the journey through the pages and admired the clever way it all fitted together with a satisfying ending, though not every character got the fate they deserved. Well done Janice Hallet, I look forward to your next book.

5,0 su 5 stelle Fun, gripping and original whodunnit

This book was highly original; I absolutely loved the chance to play detective the format provided. You are essentially given a wad of email and written correspondence and asked to help the team solve the case. Initially, I was worried I would find this boring or repetitive but only a few pages in I was absolutely gripped. The author is very talented to be able to sketch out each character’s personality so well purely through their correspondence. Certain characters provide you with a creeping sense of unease and I really enjoyed working out the key reveals for myself before they were elucidated by the law students (proxy for the reader in the text). I was still kept guessing for one of them which was good! It seems this format isn’t for everyone but I thought it worked brilliantly and truly engaged the reader. The lists of characters at the start and mid point were extremely helpful in reminding you who was who and sometimes I found myself going back a couple of pages to check something - this wouldn’t be easy to do on Kindle so recommend reading this in hard copy. Overall, a fantastic debut and can’t wait to read more from this author!

Absolutely love this book. Even bought it twice after losing my first copy travelling.

Completely randomly I also bought The Twyford Code which I then realised wss the same author. For someone who only owns 10 books or so, there's something about the synopsis for these books that obviously draws me right in!
