4,0 su 5 stelle Very original

This was truly something else… and I applaud the author for coming up with such a unique format.

Two apprentices working for a lawyer are tasked with the assignment to uncover the murderer of Samantha Greenwood. But how? It's simple, by checking 1400 personal e-mails and text messages from suspects, during the time before her murder.

After reading this book, I am hesitant to pursue my career as a detective because I had no idea who the killer was. Especially because each of the 15 suspects (yes, you read well) had a good reason to kill Sam. And yes, I suspected them all at one stage.

Although there isn’t any action in this book, there’s plenty of drama, and it was very interesting to have the story unfold just by reading through the correspondence.
Most of what went on outside the e-mails was left to the imagination, and to gather more information you had to read between the lines. In the end, I had all the details I needed to solve the case, but I still couldn't.

On the downside I felt the book could have been shorter. Many e-mails flew over my head… and I had no idea if they were going to be important to solving the case. It was hard to keep track of who everyone was and how they were connected, even though you get a detailed list of all the characters. It had me flipping back and forth between the pages which was time consuming.
Also, reading over 400 pages of correspondence at times felt like a chore and I craved some real interaction between the protagonists!

But it’s certainly worth picking up, if you want an Agatha Christie style thriller and fancy yourself a sleuth!

4,0 su 5 stelle Excellent mystery but flawed framing device.
Recensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 22 dicembre 2022

The book begins with a note transmitting a case file to two of his employees. He says it is better if they nothing about the case, but should learn about it from reading the documents in the file. These consist of texts and emails exchanged among members of an amateur theatrical company. The group takes on another purpose when a two-year-old child is diagnosed with a brain tumor, the group turns to fund raising to pay for an extremely experimental drug. The texts and emails are written so as to give each character his or her own voice. Often they are funny. The plot has numerous twists and turns that usually make sense.

What doesn't make sense is the lawyer's sending the case file to two young employees without any context. They don't even know who their client is. Apparently they are supposed to find out who committed a murder from reading documents. The author's use of emails and texts to tell the story was ingenious. Unfortunately, her framing device explaining why these documents must be read fails. I suggest that readers of the book skip the comments of the two employees reviewing the file, and just stick with the main narrative.

4,0 su 5 stelle Entertaining, intriguing & gossipy fun but so deviously constructed it’s impossible to solve!

Janice Hallett’s debut is a refreshingly original novel told in epistolary format and made up of emails, texts, police transcripts and WhatsApp messages. It is also an opportunity for the reader, according to the premise, to test their powers of dedication alongside law students, Olufemi (Femi) Hassan and Charlotte Holroyd, both of whom are training under Roderick Tanner QC. A client of Tanner’s is currently serving time for a murder that he believes they did not commit, with the real killer having given themselves away in the various snippets of recovered communication and he needs Femi and Charlotte to see it too as he prepares for the appeal.

The Hayward’s are the alpha family in the small town of Lockwood with husband and wife, Martin and Helen, co-owning The Grange country club and the director and lead actress respectively of the Fairway Players amateur dramatics society. They either employ or cast a number of those in the local community and it pays to keep in with them, with the influential MacDonald’s slightly further down the food chain. When Martin announces their next play, clingy nurse Isabel Beck is thrilled to bring along her new colleague plus her husband, Sam and Kel Greenwood, both recently returned from voluntary work overseas and new to the area. Parts have barely been cast before Martin delivers the bombshell news that his two-year-old granddaughter, Poppy, has been diagnosed with a brain tumour. Following consultation with her oncologist the family launch a crowdfunding appeal in the hope of raising enough money to purchase an experimental drug from the US, believed to be Poppy’s best chance of survival. The sprawling plot covers everything from the fundraising effort, family tensions, issues at work for nurses Isabel and Sam as well as personal relationships and it unfolds at a brisk pace with complications aplenty. Although there are a fair number of characters involved in the events, the whole thing has a soap opera feel and it doesn’t take long to understand how everyone is connected as well as suss out their opinions of each other! Fast-moving and frequently hilarious, I was quickly hooked trying to read between the lines and lapped up the gossipy goings-on, judgy attitudes and social hierarchy within this small subset of the community.

It quickly becomes apparent that there is a high degree of selectivity to the chosen information that the reader is made privy to, such as only seeing one side of a conversation to only seeing some characters through the eyes of others. At 70% Tanner reveals that what we have read is the recovered correspondence submitted at the original hearing and sets his two law students questions to explore, before challenging them to come up with their own theories. Whilst I really enjoyed the students initial discussion of the case, I was disappointed to find out that what I had read was all smoke and mirrors effectively with key pieces of information undisclosed, making it impossible for the uninformed reader to solve. When Tanner supplies additional pieces of correspondence and reveals that “three masquerade as others, one does not exist at all”, it started to feel a tad gimmicky and like Hallett’s focus shifted to delivering an overly convoluted solution with the law students left to tell all to the reader. Overall great fun but slightly too long and not quite the fair play mystery that the premise implies.

4,0 su 5 stelle Difficult read but fun plot

The format of using emails and messages to convey the story made it somewhat difficult to read although the writing was good. I had initially tried to do this using Audible but it was very difficult to follow so I got the paperback. Keeping track of all the people in this who done-it was part of game. It was like playing a game of Clue but you don’t even know who got murdered until you are 75% through the book. It is a unique book and I have to say that I did appreciate the concept.

I read this book on a recommendation, without reading the blurb. It took a few pages before I realised that it is all communications via email and some messages. Once I got the hang of it I was hooked! I had no idea 'who dunnit' until the very end. When I first saw the title I thought it was a legal thriller (à la Grisham!) about An Appeal in court. But no, it's an appeal to raise money for a sick child and people's motives to that end. Definitely worth a read.

4,0 su 5 stelle Brillian holiday read - couldn't put it down!

Actually, I didn't real this on holiday sadly, but I couldn't put it down and I did spend a very enjoyable, day sunbathing in my garden, immersed in the lives of the Lower Lockwood am-dram society. As someone who has spent many years involved with a lovely, local amateur theatre group (on stage and behind the scenes), some of the personalities and internal politics certainly resonated. Less so the skull-duggery and murder, fortunately.

That said, not all of the plot-line completely held together for me. Possibly I missed the point, but the whole premise of the QC putting his entire trust in two law students seemed very unlikely and their messages seemed rather peripheral, so this was a bit of a strange device for me. That said, I loved the story unfolding solely via messages and emails - it's always fascinating to hear different character's relate their version of the same events - and start to unpick some of the mis-directions for myself.

Overall I loved it and having already devoured The Twyford Code, I eagerly wait for Ms Hallett's next intriguing story.

The format of the book is refreshing, albeit a little hard to get accustomed to. Once you're able to differentiate the characters and timelines, it's really fun to read. I love the nuances in the book where characters contradict themselves and you as the reader have to pick up on it. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will recommend to friends and family!

A series of emails and texts tells the story of questionable fund raising for cancer intervention, questionable behavior of medical personnel in Africa, and a murder. A who funniest and what was really done mystery.
