When Germany invades the Netherlands during World War II, Peter Bogarde loses both of his parents to the cruelty of the Nazis. Already stricken by this devastating blow, his world comes completely undone when he learns that his sister, a nurse working at a London hospital, has also died during a bombing raid.

With nothing left to lose, Peter enlists in the British Army, where his abilities and passion enable him to join the Commandos. Eventually he comes to the attention of the Special Operations Executive who select Peter, along with a Czech soldier named Jan Kubcek, to undergo specialised training in order to carry out a top secret order: the assassination of Hitler himself.

The plan is simple—Peter and Jan will parachute into Germany near Hitler’s beloved Berghof estate and, from there, end his life…and the war.

The gravity of the men’s mission weighs heavily on them—especially Peter. Haunted by memories of his deceased family, his desire for revenge burns ever more brightly the closer he comes to assassinating the man he holds responsible.

Paul Bernardi graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history before going on to earn a master’s degree in Anglo-Saxon history, both from the University of Leeds in West Yorkshire, England.

A lifelong love of history inspired him to write his World War II novel, To the Devil His Due, based on a plan drawn up by the British Special Operations Executive to assassinate Hitler.

Paul currently lives with his wife and two children in Cheshire, United Kingdom.

I love an adventure with a lot of drama, but when reading fiction I often find myself thinking "But this couldn't happen in real life!" which removes some of the excitement. This book centres around a secret mission led by the British Special Operations Executive and I think the cover of the book makes clear who this mission is looking to take out :-).

After seeing the Tom Cruise movie Valkarie previously the premise of eradicating an evil leader always appealed to me and that was what made me pick this book up. I'm so pleased that I did, a dramatised true story that was a real page turner.

I have a regular prompt in my diary to check back on Amazon to see if Bernadi has released another book, he sure knows how to spin a yarn!

What a great first novel from Paul Bernardi.
It centres around a secret mission by the British Special Operations Executive (Responsible for spying/sabotage etc - Based on real life secret papers, only declassified 50 hears after the war finished) in occupied Europe by Peter Bogarde, an exiled Dutchman whose family have been killed by the Germans.
It balances his desire for revenge with his duty as a soldier when put up against the Nazi war machine. Lots of nice historical and military details and very exciting all the way through.
Happy to recommend a read!

Three things I like to see in a book- Characters to empathise with, need to understand what makes them tick! A story that takes you on a journey rather than the obvious route one to the conclusion!! An outcome that provokes further thought, what had occurred, we can never be sure!!!
This yarn ticked all three boxes and more.
I need fiction to be absorbing and historical fiction can often lose the authenticity on the journey but not in this case.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book and would whole heartedly recommend!!

Great read. I bought a copy for a well deserved holiday and found myself totally immersed into the story to the point that I couldn't put it down. Mr Bernardi does an excellent job pulling the main characters back stories together and places them into a totally absorbing storyline, allowing the reader to empathise as to why someone would take on such a suicidal mission. The historical backdrop to the novel and the alternative view of history has no doubt seen the author spending a great amount of time researching.

Obviously well researched, but a really good read, especially as a debut, really cared about the main characters and some really good plot twists right to the end........with a did he, or didn't he at the end.

Highly recommended...................when's the film out???
