The film is a revelation in a restored high definition print showing off Bernard Knowles superior monochrome photography. However, it will always be the poor relation to the sublimely magical, erotic, moving combination of comedy and thrills that is the 39 Steps, released two years earlier, lacking the star charisma of Donat and Carroll. De Marnay and Pilbeam are pale imitations in comparison, stuffed shirts Hooray Henrys in comparison to the cosmopolitan pairing of Donat and Carroll who are neither young nor innocent.
The model work, filmed with a Hornby Double O train set, is either quaint or laughable, depending on how indulgent you happen to be, but the famous crane shot is simply stunning and worth the price of admission.

Strange this. For months now I had been trying to remember a film in which the villain is a drummer in a '30s band, picked out by a long camera shot tracking in to his face, whilst he blinks madly. For some reason I thought the part was played by Alistair Sim, and explored various films but just couldn't find it. Then a few days ago by pure coincidence I was listening to a Radio 4 programme, 'Great Lives', on Hitchcock and someone happened to mention 'the famous long crane shot' in Young and Innocent. He described it in great detail. I had found the film!

So I bought the Bluray disc, and was pleasantly surprised at the quality, picture and sound. Many old films have particularly poor sound quality. This is fine, The plot of the film itself I had completely forgotten and was delighted to be entertained by this earlyish, British, Hitchcock. Lots of typical Hitchcock humorous touches in what is basically a similar on-the-run theme to 'The 39 Steps'. And at the end, that great crane shot! It clearly made an impression the first time I saw it, but why it's been going round my head recently I have no idea.

Recommended to all Hitchcock fans and lovers of fine old British films. Wonderful.

This is a very early Hitchcock made in the late thirties and is a real gem. Acting was very different in those days and you can see it which of course just adds to this movies charm. I really enjoyed the story and most importantly the quality is pretty darn good, its a very old movie and you can see that they have tried really hard to upscale this film. Yes its grainy, its very old, but some of the scenes have come out pretty well indeed and the sound is good too. I would recommend for the Hitchcock fan!

This is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s pre Hollywood movies ‘Young and Innocent’. It isn’t as well known as some of his more famous works but if you ignore some of more primitive 1930’s production values it’s actually pretty good. A young man goes on the run after being wrongly accused of murder ( a familiar Hitchcock theme) aided by the daughter of the local police constable played by the wonderfully named actress Nova Pilbeam. It’s reminiscent of the 39 Steps but with a lighter comedic touch and has a famous piece of camerawork towards the end that goes from extreme wide angle to extreme close up in a single take.

A good old style drama/thriller. This time it's not a pure thriller or, at least, thriller is not the reason why to watch it, maybe because we're talking about a former Hitchcock, still swinging between sentimental drama and thriller/noir.
Here characters and a kind of familiar setting where you feel home after 1 minute, are the focus. It's one of Hitch's biggest qualities, which he won't lose even when he'll become the real master of suspense. Not a masterpiece, but a good film with a good remastering
