Vietnam - Culture Smart! outlines the history, culture, and traditions of the Vietnamese. It explains certain deep-seated attitudes, describes some of the social and cultural changes now underway, and gives practical advice on what to expect and how to behave in unfamiliar situations. It aims to help you discover for yourself the warmth and vast potential of this fascinating country and its delightful people. They are open and friendly, with senses of humor and irony, and are frankly curious about the outside world. Kind and generally helpful toward strangers, they are industrious, shrewd, and determined to improve their lot. Amidst war and strife throughout their country's history, the true Vietnamese characteristics of patience and adversity shine through in this in-depth look at their culture.

Being a farang tourist is always a difficult position to be in. It's good that you can convey that you are trying to behave properly and taking local sensibilities into account in your behaviour. Most guidebooks will tell you the obvious things (like, don't touch anyone's head), but they don't give much guidance on more status-oriented behaviour (what you do if you are the guest of honour at a meal) or even guidance on eating with chopsticks (don't let them touch your mouth or teeth -- I've been eating with chopsticks for 60 years, but this is the first help I've had with the ordinary table manners of eating).
Having these things explained to you is one of the best ways to begin to understand local "cultural practices" from the inside. Few tourist guides get this far. I read it before looking at the usual guides . . . so it helped a lot with imagining situations.
It covers everything you need to know to make sure you avoid any mistakes and embarrassing yourself!
It also has interesting information on the history and political system of Vietnam.
The book doesn't say what normal travel guides tell you and what common sense dictates.
It's an interesting book and fun to read but I wouldn't say it's essential as the book suggests.
I'd say save the money and when you get to Vietnam have a cup of their amazing ice coffees.
