Nicci French was my absolute go-to for easy read contemporary domestic noir for ages, until they lost me with that tedious days-of-the-week series. But I returned super-hopefully to the fold for this stand-alone. Sadly, it felt oddy old-fashioned - as if they've somehow been left behind, missing out totally on the current trend for non-linear plotting and dramatic narrative twists mid-book. But that wasn't the key reason the book didn't work for me. It was, as several other reviewers have said, simply too unbelievable: the core premise just couldn't begin to hold up as warranting police attention, and the internet 'searches' that drove the plot forward were hopelessly unconvincing. The writing was also, in my opinion, quite a lot less sharp than in the vintage years ... a lazy London setting and way too much repetitive padding about choosing daily outfits for a toddler/the child's bedtime rituals/ making cups of coffee for visitors (down to how much milk and sugar) etc etc. Oh - and I identified the villain before I even knew what the crime was. They might as well have had a Post-It sticker on their forehead. So ... sorry, but not for me.

I really enjoyed this book right up to page 336. It was almost as if someone else had written the last 120 pages. It was going so well then bam! Ex threatening to press charges, get a restraining order and custody, all things that don't exist in the UK where this book was set. Was the editor American? Then it devolved into victim blaming, and that old trope: she must be mad, imagining things, no one believing her yawn yawn. I wanted to give up at this point. I persevered and I'm glad I did because the ending was perfect, but that glaring mistake at the start of the final third knocked a star off the rating and really annoyed me. For future reference in the UK we report things to the police, the CPS decide whether or not the arrestee can be charged. We have non-molestation orders. And child arrangement orders which include residency orders and involve lengthy costly processes: psychological formulation, CAFCAS, etc.

I have read most of Nicci French’s books and thought they were all marvellous but not so this book which has, in my opinion, a very weak and thin plot running right through it. The scene were Tess claims Aiden was threatening to kill her was totally unbelievable and so this lengthy story came to a poor, poor conclusion. What, pray, was all that about an envelope which Tess apparently left out and which had changed position overnight. Who was it for? What did it contain? The whole book is a huge disappointment!!

Any novel requires you to suspend your disbelief but this one requires you to throw it off a cliff without a parachute. I found the main character really annoying as well.

I am a great fan of Nicci French. However this novel was too claustrophobic for me.

I find it frustrating to hear only one 'voice' in a book and that voice itself so unreliable. I could find very little to warm to in the central character and her behaviour and state of mind were very unsettling. Because she was so suspicious of everyone around her I couldn't empathise'

As usual it was well-written and clever. But I shan't read it again as I have so many of their books.
