If you've ever read a review of the Tractive GPS Dog Tracker on Amazon, chances are you've read my review of it from the 7th of May 2019. In it I touched on the battery life, having this to say:Recensito nel Regno Unito il 19 giugno 2020
"3. Battery life. The manufacturer’s claim is 2-5 days. In total truth, they’re not lying. The device has manged 48 hours….just! I’ve kept a close eye on the charge level throughout the day during this last week as the app tells you the percentage left, and leaving the tracker on the dog all of the time and never using the Live Tracking function I can just get 48 hours out of it before it dies. It’s not as impressive as I’d hoped."
That was my thoughts after a couple of months of ownership. Over a year on and I can't say I'm any more impressed by the product, and the performance of the battery soon tailed off to a point where we were charging it every night. As I stated at the time, there wasn't really a better alternative. Sadly, that's still true a year down the line, so I continue to stick with Tractive for all its failings and many false positives. Storm is sitting right next to me as I type this, sat in the window watching the world go by....I've had several alerts this morning to tell me she's wandered off down the street. But still, I still maintain that something is better than nothing.
Helpfully, though, Tractive released an upgraded battery for their GPS device. I bought it the moment it was available and have been using it for more than half a year now. I'm happy to report that it is significantly better than the one that ships with the Tractive, easily outlasting the smaller battery. But there is the rub though, it's just a bigger version of the original. A much bigger version. If your pet was every irritated by the presence of the GPS tracker around their neck, they're not going to be any more thrilled by this. It's significantly bigger and heavier.
Fortunately, Storm has never been remotely bothered by the Tractive, with or without the larger new battery. It's perhaps a shame that this larger capacity battery isn't the one included with the Tractive when you buy the device, as battery life is a significant factor in the decision making process. Still, at least they acknowledge that the battery was poor, otherwise this product wouldn't exist. I thank Tractive therefore for releasing this better battery, and if you own the tracker then it's pretty much a slam-dunk decision to upgrade.
