Something of a moral fable about modern relationships, this is a smart and enjoyable story ― Sunday Mirror
The narrative dips back and forth with various points of view from stunningly drawn characters and I devoured it in one long sitting. Take this to the beach, or indeed anywhere ― I promise you won’t regret it. ― Daily Mail

There are so many psychological thrillers around right now – but this is one of the best. ― Sun

The book is about an enlarged family, Adrian husband of one, former husband of two and father of five and he come to terms with his own life and existance when he finds himself widow after his wife Maya dies.
Tha't pretty much about it. The secrets the family members hide are just some gossip elements which bring no addiction to the plot and/or to the other characters and nothing really happens in the whole book.
I finished just because I was curious to find out if anythig a little more exciting came out, but it didn't.

This could maybe have been okay if it weren't for the people - especially the husband. Selfish, self-absorbed, spoilt and just thoroughly unpleasant. And yet he came up smelling of roses - even at the end, after everything that had happened he was still fantasizing about the cat lady.
The offspring weren't much better, again spoilt and on occasion downright nasty.
On reflection, they all deserved each other so perhaps the very predictable ending serves them right.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the other Lisa Jewell books I have read but this one was such a disappointment.
Initially found it really dull and difficult to get through. Was toying with giving up until about a quarter of the way through when the mystery around Maya's death and the emails were initially introduced. I really thought it would be Otis who was sending the emails so was surprised when that wasn't the case.
But... Then the ending. What a load of absolute rubbish. Cannot believe that Adrian was forgiven by his family and his second wife got back with him?!! Absolutely ridiculous. Was rolling my eyes big time. He was selfish and thoughtless and did not deserve such a fairy book ending.. Would not recommend.

However, I was bitterly disappointed. I could just not get into this at all, I found the storyline boring and only continued with the book to see if it did improve, but sadly no it didn't. I feel bad giving a negative review as like I've said I did enjoy another of her books but this just didn't ring true. My husband has an ex wife and kids and we have kids and there certainly isn't the camaraderie and friendship that this book depicts between all 3 wives and children. I know some estranged families can get on but I do believe they are few and far between and most are antagonistic. Even the 12 year old boy Otis has such a grown up head on him concerning feelings etc that just doesn't seem real - my 12 year old boy wouldn't know where to begin to express the feelings and emotions Otis did.
It is an easy book to read and follow and I imagine would be a great holiday read sitting on a beach - you will probably either love or hate this book, so I would still recommend this to readers of chic lit rather than thrillers and at the end of the day it is only my opinion. Sorry Lisa.
3 stars.
