I like authors who when they write their stories manage to do it in such a detailed way that it is easy for me to mentally picture what I read. In this novel, from the very first pages I saw myself catapulted into a film, the kind that have always kept me glued to the screen without ever diverting my attention. It's the same effect that this story had on me. Lots of action, many well-described characters, adrenaline-pumping situations, a dose of mystery with very interesting historical references. Accurate and fluid writing.

There are only a handful of authors whose books I'll read without hesitation, not even bothering with the blurb. Gillian McAllister is one of those authors. Everything she writes is totally fantastic, with amazing characters and totally realistic situations. I read this book in little over 24 hours and honestly could not put it down.

The Plant's are a very close trio of siblings. They run a successful vet practice and live in adjoining cottages where they literally live in each other's pockets. An incident whilst on holiday in Verona changes their lives forever, and our family unravels in the worst way possible. Relationships are ruined, truths are covered and uncovered, and we find out just how far each is prepared to go to protect each other. It is totally gripping.

Recommended by a friend and I will never forgive her. As I love her so much, I ploughed through to the end. A great concept, but so boring. This book just proves how hype can create a bestseller. Richard & Judy, you should hang your heads in shame. Absolute garbage. Only gave one star as no option to give none. I cannot stress enough how boring this book is.

Did Richard and/or Judy REALLY recommend this book??? It really is some of the worst drivel I've ever attempted to read. I agree with those who have said it is far too long, for one thing. Next thing, it's just NOT credible!! And the incestuous relationship between adult siblings - just no. For anyone to act as Frannie did and for her siblings to cover up the murder she so deliberately committed, is really ridiculous. (And then she escapes punishment by being mentally ill - that really is an abuse of mental illness and of those who actually do suffer from mental illness. Not to mention a total cop out.) How on earth could anyone live with themselves after murdering the father of their child - or assisting with the cover up? I hated all the characters, and thought they were all feeble. Not one brain between them. And as for Joe - well, why did it have to be the man who had anger issues? How very unimaginative.

Totally farfetched and unbelievable. I had to skip parts of the book because - too much blurb filling up the pages and also - boring.

I can't believe so many people have allocated five stars to this absolutely awful tale which, towards the end - and in spite of my having skipped so much - made me feel quite ill. (Joe killing Evan was totally unnecessary.) (And his prison sentence for murder was so short!!) Also to those who 'never saw things coming' when everything was so obvious - think!

I can't wait for Gillians' books to be published as I have never yet been disappointed by any of them. This one holds you from the first page and doesn't let go even when you've finished as you're wondering, what would I do? There were twists I didn't see coming and the whole concept was just brilliant. No spoilers or plot detail, just the highest recommendation to read this fantastic gripping story- you will be so glad you did.

I love a good thriller. This, unfortunately, just wasn’t it.

The writing is fine but none of the main characters are particularly likeable. I was also disappointed by the ‘twist’ and the motive in the end.

*spoilers*

Are we really supposed to believe that a bright (she got into university to be a vet even if she later dropped out) middle class woman with a supportive family could have thought for one minute that the person she had a one night stand with in another country could get full custody of their child? The man couldn’t have been on the birth certificate, the kid was born in the UK, a British citizen and had no relationship with his dad in Italy. Even a cursory google would have told her he didn’t have a hope in hell. It was just ridiculous and ruined the book for me.
