Entertetaining, easy to read but deep in many parts. It's a perfect book for parents, but kids shoul be intrigued by witches, magic, supernatural powers... This book makes you think about many things of you life.

Sanctuary is a small town murder mystery with a twist... A little bit eerie, a little bit shocking, and a little bit magic.

Full of dramatic twists and turns, the plot builds the suspense beautifully. The characters are fully realised and their relationships and interactions with one another are masterfully done to build sympathies, anger and distrust.

Besides being a clever mystery, Sanctuary is also a terrifyingly believable portrayable of a community turning on itself which hits a little close to home in this political climate! I couldn't put it down and read through the night - this is definitely a book that will stay with me.

I love it when a book surprises me, and with that ending... Just wow! I'm completely obsessed with this book and cannot wait to see what V V James does next!

A CHILLING REMINDER OF HOW EASY THE MANIPULATION OF MINDS

Connecticut. Sanctuary is a small town, sedate and well heeled. Four friends sit enjoying an evening chat and a drink. Suddenly news that devastates. Fire at a student party. The building gutted. Teen sporting hero Daniel dead. Soon appalling rumours of murder and witchcraft.

Those four friends included Abigail, mother of Daniel, and Sarah, a witch for years such a boon with her healing skills. What for that friendship now when vicious tongues wag with allegations about Harper, Sarah's daughter...?

Hysteria takes hold. Powerful speakers leap at the opportunity to misinform, prey upon prejudice and fan the flames. Officer Maggie Knight is sent in to investigate, the local police chief Tad Bolt unhelpful - his son Jake the one first having made the allegations.

An involving read. Its setting most firm with strongly etched characters. Tension almost unbearable as events accelerate to a dramatic climax.

Also an uncomfortable read. History abounds with examples of prejudices enflamed by skilful manipulators. So many victims because of their colour, religion, or simply because different. Often in common, including now, are people only too keen to stir up discord to serve their own interests.

Of course, in this instance, the Salem witch trials are particularly pertinent, fears preyed upon by people most devious. Much is learned here about witchcraft through the ages - often those accused simply skilled healers of bodies and minds. With some there would indeed seem an awesome supernatural element - often used for the good, but not always so. (Hence tales of devilish deeds calculated to create fear.)

Can events in Sanctuary become one of those cases where passions so speedily enflamed can quickly be calmed - a community soon back to near normal, embarrassed that for a brief while all got so out of hand? Many will eagerly read on in order to find out.

Yes, much to think about here, especially when the telling so grips.

A Cheat and a Disappointment - not entirely !

It’s the ending that’s supposed to thrill but actually disappoints. However, the build up throughout the book, linked as it is with deference due to Miller’s The Crucible, consist of the truths, half-truths, lies and half-lies together with the twists, turns and deviations that are essential to any narrative connected with the supernatural. The writer has done her homework and has created a compact group of characters and through their monologues has alternated the pace of the tale well which results in the tsunami of action in the penultimate chapter [the actual revelation in the last chapter has been prepared for the astute reader as the text unfolds]…..and yet this is a bit of a let down as questions remain unanswered and the moral outcome is as unresolved as story-lines in TV soaps. But then……….None-the-less, a good read to pass the time on a long-haul flight or sitting on a deckchair in the sun on a Greek island.

I'm not into witchcraft, so I was a bit wary that that would spoil my enjoyment of the story. It didn't however.

I enjoyed this book - about a community that ends up turning on it's own trusted members when things happen that can't easily be explained.

There were a few holes in the story (as there are in many mystery/crime stories) but that didn't stop it being an very entertaining page turner.

All these rave reviews i thought i must be missing something! Several times i went back to this book to give it another go but in the end i admitted defeat, it just made me think of some American teenage movie. I don't write that many book reviews (and i read a lot of books) but this was so awful i had to share what i thought.
