Well, friends, speaking of twists and turns ... phew! I wonder how anyone could have seen this one coming! I feel pretty 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘣𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥!
After reading 𝘏𝘪𝘴 & 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘴 by the same author, I was quite concerned that this book would not do it justice!
But I needn’t have worried because @alicewriterland is the queen of twists, and this superbly written thriller is no exception. It kept me guessing right until the very end! And no matter how many times my reading buddy and I went back to reread parts of the story, the twist still managed to smack us right in the face!
When Amelia and Adam win a weekend in the remote Scottish Highlands, it could be just what they need to save their marriage. Both are at odds when they finally arrive during a snowstorm, only to discover that their Inn is a converted chapel with an adjoining graveyard. Shortly after they get settled in, things start getting weird. A mysterious face appears at the window, locked doors inexplicably open the next day, electricity is turned off. And no phone signal! When their dog suddenly goes missing during the night, suspicions flare-up between the couple ...
We get some backstory through letters that one of the two characters writes to the other each year of their marriage and which help us understand why their relationship is so strained.
I honestly don’t want to say anything more because the best thing is to go into this one blind…and possibly deaf. The less you know the better.
I would have given five stars if it weren't for the very last chapter, which I found pretty superfluous. I mean what was the point?
But all in all, I am 𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘥! You need to read this one!

My first experience of Alice Feeney's writing was her previous release, "His & Hers". Although I enjoyed it, I didn't think it ranked amongst the very best books in the genre. However, her latest offering, "Rock Paper Scissors" certainly does!
It is difficult to go too far into the plot without giving away annoying spoilers and ruining other readers' enjoyment of the experience, so I will do no more than refer you to the official synopsis. As with the author's previous novel this is written in a style that is quite filmic. It doesn't surprise me in the least that the book has already been optioned and is going to brought to the television screen by Netflix.
At its heart, this is essentially a domestic suspense thriller - and a very fine example it is too. When you read a lot of books from the mystery thriller genre you do tend to become quite adept at piecing together the various parts of the puzzle well before the solution is formally revealed. I can honestly say that I did not manage to achieve that with this novel. There were various tracks that I thought the story might go down, but Alice Feeney kept managing to surprise me by taking matters in a slightly different direction to the one I had envisaged. It has to be said that any misdirection is handled in a legitimate fashion, rather than cheating and simply pulling a rabbit out of the hat. This is much more a case of careful planning and plotting on the part of the author. I am not aware of the influences there may have been on Alice Feeney's writing, but at times I picked up hints of Stephen King, but I also sensed an atmospheric menace akin to the work of Daphne du Maurier.
I can heartily recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys quality, suspenseful mystery writing and I will certainly be back for the author's next book.
✂️ The storyline - it’s clever & I was certain I had it figured out & was totally wrong! - don’t you just love it when you are kept guessing until the end?!
✂️The characters - I loved most of them & the ones I hated, turns out was because that’s exactly what Feeney wanted me to do! I was wrapped round her finger 🙄😂
✂️The setting - a creepy converted chapel - locked doors, hidden rooms & eyes staring at you in the the dark! It was creepy & kept me turning the pages in anticipation
✂️The writing style - it was just so easy to read. The chapters are each from a different POV & scattered with copies of letters that Adam’s wife writes him on each year of their anniversary - I also loved the touch of the word of the day/year.
My fave one was: Growlery - a place to retreat to privately when Ill- humoured. - I think that’s what i’m going to rename my husbands den 😂
Normally I do a section on things I didn’t like, but honestly there wasn’t anything!
This book kept me hooked from the first page & those of you that love a thriller with twists that keep coming until the final page will love it!
I'm always sceptical of reading all the amazing reviews before I start a book. The most hyped up novels usually leave me underwhelmed but for some reason I was drawn to this title so thought I'd give it a go and see what all the fuss is about....
I loved the atmospheric setting and the eerieness of the Scottish Highlands. The fact its set in a remote place made me feel isolated as a reader which I loved because I forgot about the real world for afew hours. The characters I warmed to and even felt sorry for. Mr and Mrs Wright are dealing with the struggles of marriage which we can all relate to. I for one have experienced my husbands job sometimes mean more to him than me lol
The writing is excellent and there's some beautiful sentences that really takes your breath away and then there's the thrill of reading this book 😲 After each chapter leaves you on the edge you can't help but read on. This is THE book that you literally can not put down.
I've read alot of thrillers and more often than not I can usually guess the twist which sometimes leads to a dull read. This book left me asking " how did the author just unravel everything like that?" It's so cleverly written .
Rock, Paper, Scissors is now in my top 5 of my favourite books of all time and definitely the best I've read in 2021
1. The main character is a writer, or in this case two main characters. Why not have carpet salesmen, or denture makers or binmen?
2. When there is a really uncommon illness/frailty at the centre. Face blindness anybody?
3. When the whole story depends on a found diary/journal or in this case letters written on wedding anniversaries but not sent.
So many times smart people act foolishly, coincidences everywhere, so many plot holes. Why was October? even in this, what did she add?
I know a good book can transport you to another place, this is a place I do not want to be.
I just wonder if this was accepted for publication, then what did they turn down?
