Found this book so useful - every possible angle is covered; from how to find the right dog and what to look for when visiting a shelter, bringing a new rescue dog home, basics of training, socialisation etc right through to understanding the dog's behaviour and how to deal with any problems. We had already found our dog when I bought this book so the early chapters about finding the dog weren't applicable but I still found them interesting to read as they gave an insight to things I would encounter later, like dog body language. I must admit that when I read it I hadn't even thought of some of the scenarios it mentioned and I did worry about whether we'd done the right thing getting a rescue dog, I might not have got one if I'd read the book first!! But you have to remember that absolutely every avenue is covered in this book and so it's highly unlikely that you will encounter everything that is mentioned. We've had our dog a week now and reading this book has helped enormously with the first few days. Everything has gone very smoothly but I know that I will still use this book in the months ahead to help with training and it will also be useful to go back to if we encounter any bumps in the road on our journey with our new rescue dog. Everything is very clearly explained in this book and it's easy to read. Highly recommend if you're thinking of adopting a rescue dog (which I would also highly recommend as it's so rewarding!)
Even as an experienced dog owner I found this book to be a very valuable source of common sense advice when re-homing a dog. We had a great deal of experience with puppies but had never taken on an adult dog before. With this book we were able to prepare ourselves and our home to receive our new dog. The guidance on how to introduce the dog to its new environment and how to set the boundaries worked perfectly and we have had virtually no problems as a result. The text is well written and applies a common sense approach to the issues while providing practical advice and achievable solutions. With the help of this book you will be ready for your new pet and can anticipate and overcome issues before they become problems. As a result of applying the principals of the book George is now a happy dog in his new home after only 4 days with us.
I wanted to do more research and planning before we went to choose to rehome a rescue dog. I ordered this book on a Friday at 17.30 ish and it being described as in good condition. I received it 10 am the Saturday morning and it appeared as new. I was already delighted but once settled down with a cup of coffee and a determination to learn it just got better. The book helps from every angle particularly right from the beginning and identifying behavior etc at the rescue center and what to expect. It was an interesting and easy read and I am sure in the weeks to come it will prove invaluable.
I think this is a must-read if you're thinking of adopting. I have another book by Vanessa Stead and I love it. She explains everything in a nice easy to understand way and even brings in the science, which I appreciate. This gives you all the information needed to start looking for a dog and setting them up for success in your home.
This book has done what it says on the tin. Our rescue dog (Collie cross, 19 months old and with us for just 9 days) is testament to the advice given. Very slightly scientific, just sufficient to gain understanding, and with loads of practical advice unique to rescue dogs, I can thoroughly recommend this book. May I suggest that you buy it before you take the decision to rehome a dog; it will repay the time spent reading it.
Really good introduction to the topic, easy to read, lots of pictures to illustrate the points made. Further literature is needed to dive further into topics such as training and undesired behaviour but it's a great foundation book to build on.
After looking for a long time for a book that would help me to train my dogs (that are both rescued) I was really pleased at last to find one specifically for this task. Whereas other books concentrate mainly on training puppies, this one addressed the issues behind the behaviours and offered realistic guidance for training adult dogs.
Great insight to the rescue dog who has different needs and issues that puppies do not have. It was a great help to us before we rehomed our two new rescue dogs. I would recommend to anything thinking of rehoming a dog.
