Good book, poor edition. Post is for Strindberg not French

I found this a fascinating critique of Swedish City life publishes in 1879. It is deeply cynical about most aspects of society, from the monarchy, parliament, organised religion, charities, families, the dramatic, written and visual arts, duplicitous relationships to business. The ‘1%’ of the era have captured all the value to be had. The description of how a marine insurance company scam is created with layers of debt and defrauding small shareholders could have come from 2008-9. The press is supine and manipulated by the owners.

We feel for the, initially idealistic, middle class young civil servant, Falk, as he is defrauded by his family and decided to write what he sees. However, he is ground down by all around.

The hunger, cold and powerlessness of the poor is painfully portrayed. The role of debt is corrosive. However, despite an extremely enlightened view of an atypical marriage at the end, there are few sympathetic female characters, and the depiction of jews is sadly typical of the period.

So a 4 star book for me. But the Amazon printed edition was very poor with odd squares and the occasional ? in brackets scattered around. Clearly edited by AI, if at all. No introduction either.

Also, be aware that nearly all the reviews under this post are erroneously for the Nicki French novel of the same name.

Haven’t checked the publishing dates but Kit Quinn in this book is a bit like a prototype Frieda Klein. Except they’ve taken Kit’s compassion out when they made Frieda - the only crime hero / heroine I don’t actually like but still feel compelled to read. Nicci & Sean are absolutely fabulous writers, no question. Profound insight and love for humanity, that’s what you need to create characters like this. And a very dark imagination. Wonder what their dinner table conversations are like?

I love Nicci French books as they're as gripping and compelling but with a darkly intelligent edge and some great female characters. This one starts off so well, exploring women's fears and creating a cast of characters who all have a secret sinister edge so that we're constantly looking over our shoulder, as it were, wondering which of them could have a hidden life as a murderer of women: the avuncular police inspector? His attractive younger colleague? The grim ex-city trader turned rescuer of the homeless? The famous psychologist? Even the female friend from the past who moves into our heroine's flat?

However after over 350+ pages of gripping suspense, revealed secrets and convoluted plot, the denouement felt very flat to me and left great gaping holes in the story which I can't talk about without revealing far too much for new readers.

So 90% of this is really good - but it all comes to a disappointingly drab end. Having read almost all of French's books there does seem to be a pattern that the central plot at the heart of the book isn't actually that good. However the weakness is wrapped up in so much good stuff that it's almost forgiveable.

Nothing really to do with a red room! Story was ok but began to get tired of the amount of alcohol consumed on nearly every page which did not enhance my reading in any way.
