L'autore

David Wondrich is a James Beard Award winning author, cocktail historian, mixologist, and educator, and one of the pioneers of the current renaissance in the art of mixing drinks. He is an acknowledged authority on spirits and their production, having written extensively on most categories in the market. A former English professor, his long-time interest in the arcana surrounding spirits and cocktails led him to leave academia to become Esquire Magazine's drinks correspondent, and later senior drinks columnist at the Daily Beast. David has written four books on drinks: Esquire Drinks; Killer Cocktails; Imbibe! (the first cocktail book to win a James Beard award); and Punch. Noah Rothbaum is the editor of the Daily Beast's Half Full section. Under his leadership, the site won the 2018 and the 2020 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Award for Best Cocktail & Spirits Publication. He also hosts the podcast Life Behind Bars with legendary cocktail historian David Wondrich, which won the 2018 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Award for Best Podcast Series and, according to the New York Times, is "a perfect comfort listen for the curious drinker." The content is good and others have written about it but i have to remove two stars for the following misleading features on this store page.

1. It says the book has 960 pages. It doesn't. It has, counting even the couple of blank pages at the end: 838+26 Roman numerals at the start+16 unnumbered glossy photo pages =880. That's 80 pages short of what it claims.

2. If you look at the pictures here, the side on view showing the pages, the book looks a lot thinner than it does in real life and the pages look whiter in their picture than they do in real life. I think the book pictured here uses higher different paper. The book I'm holding here has that kind of semi rough paper that is quite thick and absorbent and the pages go wavy if your house has humidity. I have enclosed a zoomed in photo of the paper.

Well it’s a big book set out like a dictionary or encyclopaedia. It’s very different to your everyday cocktail book and to be honest, in my opinion, it isn’t for the casual drinker. It’s for those who want to know about things. It’s comprehensive but funnily enough the first thing I looked for wasn’t there. I’d just bought a bottle of Advocaat (Warninks) as it’s the time of year it suddenly appears in Supermarkets… .Perhaps it will get into the next edition.

Interesting but not practical

The book is interesting, but at over 800 pages without an index of cocktails either by name or main type of liquor used in mix (rum, gin, whisky, etc.), I don't think it's practical for the average person. Instead, there is an index of people and places, and I suspect most readers will rarely (if ever) look at that. However, for someone training to be a "real" bartender this is undoubtedly a gold mine of information. That being said, I think I will have an Havana Zombie, but I can't find it in this book.
