Brilliant quality and substantial book. Lots of recipe ideas that I can adapt for my own family preferences. I would criticise the price of some ingredients...'Rose Harissa' as an example. Not everyone can afford this as just one ingredient in a recipe. Some substitution required but also good for introducing these new ingredients that we can try when we can.
A really good book.

As a long time fan of Ottolenghi, replicating many outstanding recipes from his books, TV shows and from his Guardian publications. I've always received many compliments and recommended his cookbooks to many a keen chef. I often use his books for gifting to young couples moving on to the next chapter of their lives together.

I have tried a few recipes from this book. I am by no means a novice I have found the recipes I've tried as too heavily fusion, such as the Mustardy Cauliflower Cheese, page 92. A cross on Aloo Gobi (which he fails to mention or worse even, accept ) and with the epitome of comfort food- in my opinion - Cauliflower Cheese.

I stuck to the recipe to the tee. I feel one cannot review a recipe conclusively unless this is done.

The dish was a massive fail, to say the least.
The flavours just didn't mingle, the use of curry powder, chillies and cumin, even whole black mustard seed is just plain wrong. Cheddar cheese is not Indian, nor is a parsley and breadcrumbs gratin. It was so off the mark, that I had to look again at the cover to ensure I had grabbed an Ottolenghi book. I felt as though the recipe drying team had tried to hard to replicate two opposing dishes into one amalgamation.

The friend I cooked for, a novice cook, who is more of a taster. Which I think helps as he can skip the delicate nuance of ingredients and judge dishes for what they are. Remarked that he thought it seems like Ottolenghi was trying to fill the pages to sell the book on his brand name.

I agree with this entirely. Sorry Ottolenghi. On the plus, I'm not giving up on this book entirely, I'm almost certain there's a hidden gem in there. Somewhere.

Firstly, I am not opposed to complex mixes of spices, or multi-step recipes or even exotic ingredients (I collect those--squid ink anyone?)--but I do judge food based on a simple formula: Deliciousness divided by Effort. As usual, Ottolenghi doesn't understand that less is more. And when you need to source black garlic, barberries, baharat (that he doesn't even define), za'atar (OK so I had that), pomegranate molasses ( I had that too), lebanese tahini (not greek), Urfa biber chilis, fresh basil (impossible in winter--as tasteless as a winter tomato), fresh dill, fresh parsley, fresh coriander (OK those I have too but they are perishable)...well, after all that shopping, the taste better be worth it. And so far, it's not--the flavors are good, but the effort for what you get generally isn't worth it. There are many recipes with raw veg that I haven't tried yet because it is winter, but I'm steering clear of things that require tasty tomatoes or fresh baby zucchini until the summer.
Overall the images are nice, but the recipes are not carefully written (a philosophy of dirtying extra bowls makes no sense to me) often with more steps than necessary or with weird measurements (2 cups + 2 tablespoons when it's just not needed). Bottom line-- when it comes to a punch of flavor with simplicity and efficiency of execution, Madhur Jaffrey blows Ottolenghi out of the water, as does Nigella Lawson, Melissa Clark, Mark Bittman. And for the record, when you make up a complicated acronym to argue simplicity (with S standing for "short on time", I standing for "10 ingredients or less" M for "make ahead" and I forget PLE...), it's clear you don't understand simplicity.

Fantastic book for recipes which are both ‘simple’ and tasty. Ottolenghi doesn’t do bland food and this book is testament to just that. The recipes are also visually stunning on the plate and wonderful for casual entertaining, especially where time is limited.

I have been waiting for this cookbook ever since it was announced, and I’m not disappointed. Simply glorious recipes for lots of vegetables and grains. Wish there were a Kindle version, though. The free online version is nice, but difficult to use. Their website needs some work.

This is my 4th Ottolenghi recipe book and like all the others it is wonderful. The recipes are always reliable and the flavours are delicious. Ottolenghis food makes me feel happy and nourished, what else is there to say.

Ottolenghi has been quoted as saying his cooking is aimed at ‘drama in the mouth.’ Simple is an acronym for Short on time, Ingredients ten or less, Make ahead, Pantry (meaning basic stock ingredients), Lazy, Easier than you think. The recipes are very clear and easy to follow. There are beautiful photographic illustrations of the dishes. There is a wide range of recipes, including salads, cooked vegetables, eggs, chicken, fish, lamb, pasta, cakes and desserts. I have tried several recipes, had easy and delicious results, and then repeated my favourites. I have also taken inspiration from a carrot salad recipe and combined some of the ingredients (cinnamon, dill, coriander, cider vinegar, garlic and honey) with carrots and, instead of making a salad, I added stock and managed to turn these flavours into a delicious soup. Many, but not all, of the recipes include suggestions for suitable accompaniments. This would have been very useful to include with the recipe for the rich and delicious chicken Marbella, but all is not lost because there is a section on Meal Suggestions at the end of the book where you can find suggestions for vegetables or salad which would go well with the delicious and easy date, olive and caper ingredients in the chicken Marbella marinade. The cross-referencing in this section is really helpful. Finally, the book is sturdy and robust enough to survive splashes and steam in the kitchen. It’s a marvellous modern recipe book, truly a gateway to ‘drama in the mouth’ for those who aspire to fit delicious cooking into an otherwise very busy life.

I have one of Yotam's earlier books but some of the recipes are just too long for me to follow. Although, I love to cook i sometimes lose interest if here are lots of elements to one recipe that I have to do!
Simple is wonderful - as much a look-through book, admiring the recipe images as it is a cookbook to cook from. I've got a few of the pages earmarked already (some of the 10 ingredients or less recipes) and I'm really looking forward to trying these out on friends and family.

I cook a lot of vegetarian food, although we are not vegetarians. Having read the reviews of this book I decided that yes I could justify yet another cookery book. I am so glad that I bought this - it really does have some wonderful recipes in it both for vegetarian and non vegetarian readers. Have done a couple already and am looking forward to working my way through the book. BUY IT - it's worth it. It really is quite SIMPLE.

I have 2 of his other books, and they are really exacting. You have to source ridiculous amounts of hard to find ingredients, and follow what he says EXACTLY to get it right. This semi criticism is clearly something he has listened to from his devotees.
In this, he has simplified, so I not only have one for myself, but have also bought one for my daughter. This is THE go to for all my cooking at the moment, and every time, its a triumph of delicious, but reasonably easy to achieve. A master class of a book.
