Elliot Sweeney is a community psychiatric nurse from London. He was awarded the Fisher Scholarship to attend the Curtis Brown Creative novel writing course, and he's also been supported by Spread the Word through their London Writers Awards Scheme. This is a story of redemption - or at least a story about someone on that road. Kaspar, the main character, has lost everything dear to him, he's drinking all the time and not very sociable. He’s at rock bottom. I wasn’t sure if I would warm to him but he shows us who he is when he gets an opportunity to do something good and takes it. He's tough and witty and damaged and gets in bad scrapes and close calls and nearly gives up but the drive to solve a mystery and prevent bad things happening to more people keeps him going. He is also struggling with a past mistake and is trying to understand it through solving this mystery.

I wanted to know how he would solve the mystery, but also how he would pull himself together after being in such a dark place - how he would survive his pain to go on and help others had me turning the pages as much as the mystery he was trying to solve. The ending was very satisfying and I look forward to more books in this new series. And important to note, the author handles suicide (and mental health issues generally) with a sensitive, intelligent touch.

I really enjoyed this debut novel and I'm already looking forward to the next in the series.
Dylan Kasper is a complicated character - having lived through the worst thing a parent can imagine, his daughters suicide, he lost his way for a while. Then he meets Tommy Berkowitz and becomes involved in his life (and death) leading him into an investigation that nearly takes his life but, in the process, helps him begin to find his way forward to a new life.
With several other intriguing main characters I'm sure the Dylan Kasper series will continue to thrill and surprise readers for some time to come.

Wasn't sure after the first couple of chapters but then it accelerates rapidly in pace and as I got to know the characters it reels you in and becomes compulsive reading, never quite knew where it was going. Can't wait for the next book!!
