Over the last ten years, Pulp Modern has set the standard for independent fiction digests, inspiring an entire new generation of indie journals. Celebrate Pulp Modern's 10th birthday with eight killer pieces of pulp fiction and an outstanding article about Walter Moseley written by Anthony Perconti.
The celebration begins with an ace piece of crime fiction by Karen Harrington. We get samples of the greatness of indie writers such as Anthony Neil Smith, Andrew Miller, and Stephen J. Golds. Nathan Pettigrew provides an odd slice of life between a father and son whose concerns about breaking the law don't get in the way of their more domestic and material endeavors. We get a nice slice of fantasy and horror from C.J. Dotson and Sarah Cannavo. Chicago's unofficial poet laureate, Tia Ja'nae, shows us just why she's the most important crime fiction writer today. Finally, Edward A. Grainger (aka David Cranmer) brings his classic western marshal, Cash Laramie, back for another adventure. Fitting, considering Cash Laramie made an appearance in the very first issue of Pulp Modern, way back in 2011, when the world still made just a little bit of sense...
Richard Krauss returns as art director. Ran Scott provides illustrations. And editor Alec Cizak sits back and lets all these talented writers and artists do their thing.

By popular demand, we present the sequel to Mardi Gras Murder. Mardi Gras Mysteries offers seventeen tales of crime, mayhem, and murder set during the celebration and licentiousness of Carnival.
For a savory sample of New Orleans lore, take a sip of “A Prayer to Momus” by DJ Tyrer or “Carnival Carnage” by John Kiste. For a dish of redemption and revenge, returning author and Louisiana native Nathan Pettigrew serves up “The Steel Pelican.” Is a mystery with a literary flavor more to your taste? Try “The Brass Menagerie” by DG Critchley. If you prefer a racier seasoning, there’s “Unholy Beads” and “Gussy Saint and the Case of the Three-Boobed Woman.” For the deepest bowl of intrigue, we end with “Keep Your Head Up,” a thriller by Tom Andes.

Three months back there was a suicide bomb in Tunisia, a prison riot in Colombia, and Australia was on fire. Italy fought a losing battle with an insidious virus, which went on to engulf the planet in a worldwide pandemic. The first world shut down. Then we watched a public execution, by a so-called peace-keeper. Then the rioting and looting began—and you know what came next, because you’re living it. The world in 2020 isn’t what it once was. The west is on fire with revolution and unrest. Violent crime and lawlessness are on the rise. Which is good news if crime is your business. And whether the world bounces back or burns down to ashes, there will always be storytelling. For Switchblade, storytelling is our business, and business is good. This is the twelfth issue of the world’s only no-limit noir digest magazine. Featuring 13 reality-check, hard luck tales of the human condition, before and after Covid-19.

Hollywood has thrilled—and titillated—audiences with tales of women who love monsters since King Kong and The Creature from the Black Lagoon. Our love affair with the ultimate “others” continued as we made the acquaintances of Barnabas Collins, Swamp Thing, the Vampire Lestat, Hellboy, and Shrek. Most recently, the genre was celebrated and, ultimately, validated when The Shape of Water won the Academy Award for Best Motion Picture—a rare nod to the power and popularity of paranormal romance story-telling.
It should come as no surprise that when ViceTV decided to do an episode on “Monsters Fantasies,” they came to Riverdale Avenue Books to interview some of those authors in an episode that aired in March 2018.

"There is but one New Orleans," they say, bustling with joie de vivre, celebrating non-stop, but step closer, into the clinging, honeysuckle-scented air, and you will find a darker version of the Big Easy, depending on what you believe is true. Tales of vampires, werewolves, curses, and mysterious half-human bayou creatures are pervasive in New Orleans’ culture. Visitors may pass them off as folk tales and superstitions, but the locals know to never go into the deep swamp alone or into the cemetery at night. Tale or truth? In New Orleans, the line between them bleeds.
