A bold, heartfelt tale of life at Green Gables . . . before Anne: A marvelously entertaining and moving historical novel, set in rural Prince Edward Island in the nineteenth century, that imagines the young life of spinster Marilla Cuthbert, and the choices that will open her life to the possibility of heartbreak—and unimaginable greatness.
Plucky and ambitious, Marilla Cuthbert is thirteen years old when her world is turned upside down. Her beloved mother has dies in childbirth, and Marilla suddenly must bear the responsibilities of a farm wife: cooking, sewing, keeping house, and overseeing the day-to-day life of Green Gables with her brother, Matthew and father, Hugh.
In Avonlea—a small, tight-knit farming town on a remote island—life holds few options for farm girls. Her one connection to the wider world is Aunt Elizabeth "Izzy" Johnson, her mother’s sister, who managed to escape from Avonlea to the bustling city of St. Catharines. An opinionated spinster, Aunt Izzy’s talent as a seamstress has allowed her to build a thriving business and make her own way in the world.
Emboldened by her aunt, Marilla dares to venture beyond the safety of Green Gables and discovers new friends and new opportunities. Joining the Ladies Aid Society, she raises funds for an orphanage run by the Sisters of Charity in nearby Nova Scotia that secretly serves as a way station for runaway slaves from America. Her budding romance with John Blythe, the charming son of a neighbor, offers her a possibility of future happiness—Marilla is in no rush to trade one farm life for another. She soon finds herself caught up in the dangerous work of politics, and abolition—jeopardizing all she cherishes, including her bond with her dearest John Blythe. Now Marilla must face a reckoning between her dreams of making a difference in the wider world and the small-town reality of life at Green Gables.

Recensione
“Sarah McCoy has given readers a precious gift: the opportunity to step back into the world of Avonlea, and the chance to get to know Marilla Cuthbert as a leading lady in her own right. In McCoy’s skillful and sensitive hands, Marilla emerges as a heroine of depth, complexity, and heart. I savored my time with this cast of old friends, enjoying the dilemma of whether to speed through these compelling pages or to pause and relish everything about the lovely world imagined within them.” -- Allison Pataki, New York Times Bestselling Author
“Fans of the Anne of Green Gables series will rejoice at this warm and heartfelt addition to their world. McCoy’s love for the characters is palpable, and with an insightful eye she illuminates the original Avonlea, while also offering glimpses into the turbulent history of the time.” -- Madeline Miller, Author of Circe
“A pitch perfect love letter to Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Green Gables. Even if you weren’t an ardent fan, you’ll still want to read this book. Marilla is a loving, captivating fictional portrait of a woman and a time that is well worth escaping to. A beautiful, heart rending story, a wonderful novel.” -- M.J. Rose, New York Times Bestseller
“Heartfelt and endearing, the tale of Green Gables will have you devouring this story in one sitting.” -- Women.com

There are quite a few prequels to the Little House On The Prairie books, from looking at Caroline's early life, and a later book about Caroline, taking you up to the point of the early books in the series. This reminded me of that, as I've always been fascinated by Marilla in the books, when she was so stern, and unforgiving in a sense., towards Anne. And of course, there was that intriguing hint about her and John Blythe, who was Gilbert's father.
This book is quite good, because the first chapter is Marilla and Matthew agreeing that they need a boy to help out around the farm - the next book is then Marilla and Matthew as teenagers, and experiencing all the heartbreak that was hinted at in later books. I won't ruin any of it for anyone who doesn't know, or has not yet read this book, but there are some incredibly sad moments, and gives you an insight into why Marilla and Matthew grew up the way they were and why they stayed living together throughout the years.
There are quite a few parallels with the Anne books, little things were obviously lifted from the Anne books, potentially unintentionally, as the author does state in the notes, that she studied the books. It was little things, that made me think of Anne in the same positions as Marilla was in her early years, and little things that she said. It was also good seeing a young Rachel, and how she could talk the hind leg off a donkey, even at such a young age.
I really felt for Marilla throughout the book, and Matthew as well, and I felt that I understood them both, so much more, by reading this book. The author has breathed life into their younger selves, and they were really well written, while staying true to the characters that LM Montgomery gave life to.
If you have read Little House On The Prairie, or Anne of Green Gables, and are looking to find out more about the particular characters, then i would highly recommend the LHOTP prequels, and this, for lovers of Marilla. You will fall in love with her that little bit more and your heart will break in two when hers does.

Firstly, the presentation of the actual book has to be commended because the cover is absolutely beautiful and the ‘feel’ of the book, owing to the old style paper, is just gorgeous.
I found it really wonderful to have a back story for Marilla and Matthew, it was beautifully written and I think the story was very good. I particularly liked the references to runaway slaves towards the end, and the feeling that Marilla had done something really good in her life. I very much enjoyed the characters and the settings.
However, the worst thing for me personally was the realisation that this author knows absolutely nothing about horses. In one instance she has a horse pulling a sleigh in the snow setting off at a gallop! In another part of the book a character, sitting in a buggie “sets the host into a bolt“ as if that’s a perfectly normal thing to do. It doesn’t take very much to run a manuscript past someone who knows something about horses because it does spoil the story to some degree.
Other than that, I’m glad I read it. I took my time reading this title because it isn’t one of those books that you race through.
