I adore Malaysian food coming from a country where it is very popular and thought I would like to be able to cook more recipes myself here in the UK The book is lovely, especially just to read, but I find it difficult to get all the ingredients. I think it would be easier if I lived in London or a big city but I'm in a village near a small town and there just isn't access to a wide range of ethnic ingredients. I occasionally order online but I'd like it if the book gave ideas about alternatives that could be used.

I've been looking for a decent Malaysian Food Cookbook that isn't too 'chefy'. This is one of two that I've bought this week on Amazon and it is also the first one to be in my possession. Had to wait for it to come back into stock but it was worth the wait. I did check the 'Look Inside' preview which piqued my interest a lot then I happened to be near a Waterstones so nipped into see if they had a copy for me to browse through-they did. I liked what I saw during that browse.

My copy arrived earlier today and I've already completed one of the recipes-admittedly, it is the Kaffir Lime and Lemongrass infused Gin but it's a start. I cannot wait for the 24 hour infusion period to be over so that I can taste it thoroughly-3 or 4 G&Ts made from this recipe should give me a good idea of how good it is. I love the flavours and aromas of SE Asia so I am expecting nothing but good things from this starting recipe.

On to the rest of the book. It is impossible to lose that's for sure-the bright pink cover ensures that it will never got lost among'st the rest of your books. It is full of great photos of the dishes-usually 1 page for the pic and the opposite one for the recipes (not every recipe has its photo included). The recipes are well explained and easy to follow (based on my first hour of looking through the book). If you are a fan of Thai cooking then you should have all of the ingredients you'll need-or know where to get them. My local Thai food 'mini mart' has a fair selection of Malaysian ingredients but you should get most of what you need at your local Superstore.

There appears to be more awareness of Malaysian food these days in the UK thanks to some of the celebrity chefs on tv doing their 'far east food tours'. Where Ping has the edge (for me anyway) is that her book is mainly 'home cooking' and apart from the odd recipe all recipes should be successful for us 'westerners'.

I really like this book-it will used a lot.

I pre-ordered this book having been impressed by Ping's food on Masterchef and my goodness was it worth the wait! I very rarely write reviews for products that I buy but this book has blown me away.

Firstly, the book itself is beautifully put together- there is a good balance of photos to text so you can see what you're making but without any filler photos. The photos are actually very cleverly used, particularly in the store cupboard opening section - numbering each of the items to each of the ingredients (particularly useful if you're using ingredients that you've not used before and don't know what to look for when shopping!)

The book is really well set out and sectioned logically. The store cupboard/ingredients section at the front is actually my favourite. Ping has clearly taken into account that people who buy this book may not have all of the ingredients readily available and that they may not be able to use up all of the fresh ingredients straight away- as a result there are useful alternatives suggested and advice on how to store the ingredients in order to extend the life of them.

I have cooked 6 recipes from the book already and without exception they have all been absolutely delicious. (I have cooked: stir-fried black pepper chicken with cashews, minced pork with coriander and fish sauce noodles, captain's chicken curry, stir-fried sweetheart cabbage with shrimp chilli oil, Malaysian take on roast chicken, ABC soup. I have also put together the store cupboard essentials - shrimp chilli oil and the garlic oil).
Unlike many other recipe books you buy where you end up having to season the dish mercilessly until you get any flavour or 'tweak' it so much that the original recipe is unrecognisable, this book provides recipes that are spot on (and don't take all day to make!) All of the recipes that I have cooked so far have been the perfect balance of fragrant flavour and heat and the quantities have been perfect.

Congratulations to Ping on such an accomplished first book, I'm looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next!

As a side note: My brother has just come back from travelling in Malaysia (and in typical sibling fashion does not hold back in his opinions) and having eaten some of the dishes I cooked from the book said that the recipes capture the Malaysian cuisine perfectly and immediately added it to his birthday wish list so that he can recreate his memories of Malaysia at home.

Happy with the contents and quality of the book, however the spine and other parts of the cover were damaged upon arrival. The packaging did not seem to have any padding material to protect it in transit.

I ordered this back in May all the way from the UK since it was not available in Malaysian bookstores then. I loved the fact that the recipes are easy to follow and do not require you to use tonnes of ingredients. As a Malaysian living in Malaysia, Ping uses ingredients that are already readily available at my home. The simplicty of her recipes cuts down a lot of unnecessary time spent in planning and preparing dishes for my family. I have tried and tested quite a number of the recipes and the claypot chicken rice one is now a firm favorite of the family. So much so that my husband who has quite a discerning palate, has declared that he does not need to venture far to look for good and healthy claypot chicken rice. To sum up, the dishes that she has chosen for her book are not just beautifully illustrated but also simply delish! I am so glad I got the book!

If you haven't had Malaysian food, check this out. If you have, you know this is good!
I ogled this cookbook last year in London, decided not to weigh down my bag, and lived to regret it. I was so happy to see that it's come out here.
I like how accessible Ping's cooking is. There are a few items I would have to search form even in the SF Bay Area, but most of them are available right here on Amazon. Really.
I've only made two recipes thus far (roast skate with sambal and jook) and both were excellent. Neither was difficult, but both did take some shopping.
While you are waiting for a few exotics (century eggs, anyone?), this is also a fun read. There are stories about Ping's childhood.
Ping won a big cooking contest in the UK that she entered to share her love of Malaysian food. I sincerely hope she does as well here.
