Definitely recommend this title to any Hitchcock fan. Only Hitchcock can put several people on a small boat in the middle of an ocean and keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Don't miss this one!

Nach einer Geschichte von John Steinbeck drehte Alfred Hitchcock 1944 den Film „Lifeboat - Das Rettungsboot“. Hauptdarstellerin war Tallulah Bankhead, eine damals bekannte Bühnen-Schauspielerin. Um diese nicht auf den Mund gefallene Dame herum gruppierte Hitchcock hauptsächlich weniger erfahrene Schauspieler und sogar Neulinge. Obwohl „Lifeboat“ mitten im Ozean direkt unter Bedrohung durch deutsche U-Boote gedreht worden war und die Film-Crew jeden Tag ihr Leben bei der Film-Produktion aufs Spiel setzen musste, ließ Hitchcock aus seiner üblichen Bescheidenheit nachträglich verbreiten, dass der Film in einem großen Seewasser-Basin in einem Filmstudio an Land gedreht worden wäre. Aber so hätte man überhaupt nicht die täuschend echten Außenaufnahmen mit Meer und Nebel auf Zelluloid bannen können! Die Film-Crew lebte während der Dreharbeiten auf einer etwas maroden Bohr-Plattform, die provisorisch zum Hotel umgebaut worden war, und ernährte sich jeden Tag von frisch gefangenem jodhaltigem Seefisch. Hitchcock bekam die Veränderung seiner Ernährung ungeheuer gut, und er magerte von 150 auf 90 Kilogramm ab (wobei der Stress durch die Aufregungen des Krieges natürlich auch eine wichtige Rolle spielte - seine Mutter lebte nämlich immer noch in England). Als Erinnerung an diese Diätkur absolvierte Hitchcock in „Lifeboat“ seinen üblichen Cameo-Auftritt in Form einer Zeitungsanzeige für das Diätmittel „Reduco“, in der er im Rahmen von Vorher-Nachher-Bildern abgelichtet ist - ein typischer Hitchcock-Gag!

Bei den amerikanischen Filmkritikern kam „Lifeboat“ nicht so gut an - manche fanden, dass unser Landsmann, der Nazi, zu positiv dargestellt worden war. Eine Rolle spielt dabei sicher auch, dass Hitchcock immer schon gewisse Sympathien für die Deutschen hatte und sogar recht gut Deutsch sprach, das er bei einem längeren Aufenthalt in einem deutschen Filmstudio gelernt hatte. Man kann auch sagen, dass er vieles von seiner filmischen Grundausbildung in Babelsberg erworben hatte. Er hat auch später bei Besuchen in Deutschland anlässlich Premieren seiner Filme immer gerne seine Deutsch-Kenntnisse zur Schau gestellt. Für einen Briten ist das absolut ungewöhnlich.

Unter den „Extras“ findet man „Eine Unterhaltung mit Alfred Hitchcock Teil 1 / Teil 2“ - es handelt sich um eine SW-Fernsehproduktion namens „Telescope“ des kanadischen Fernsehens, bei denen Hitchcock zwei kurze filmdramaturgische Vorlesungen und etwas aus seinem Leben erzählt. Beide Teile dauern je etwa 20 Minuten. Die beiden Folgen wurden etwa 1964 gedreht und zeigen auch ein paar kurze Einblicke in Dreharbeiten zu „Marnie“ und Ausschnitte von „Psycho“.

Außerdem gibt es ein 25-minütiges „Making of“ zu „Das Rettungsboot“, in dem auch seine Tochter und eine Enkelin zu Wort kommen.

Weiterhin sind auch noch enthalten die deutschen Trailer der Filme „1 Mord für 2“, „Killer Elite“, Tödliches Kommando“ und Brian de Palmas „Schwarzer Engel“ (eine gut gemachte Hitchcock Hommage).

I thought that I had seen most of Hitch's output, when Amazon directed me towards this neglected gem. I had never come across it, and drawn by the names 'Hitchcock' and 'Steinbeck' in a Masters of Cinema imprime, I figured what the hell and gave it the proverbial punt.
I am very glad that I did.
It's a wartime release, but like the excellent 'Life and Death of Colonel Blimp' (Powell and Pressburger), it does not fit the pattern of a standard flag waver. It would have been problematic at its release, not least in certain parts of America due to the sympathetic portrayal of the single black character in the boat. The characters are disparate and stereotypical, thrown together into the social melting pot of the boat by the 'master of suspense' himself (he still managed to make his customary appearance btw, although it is a little slimmed down even by his usual standards).
The performances are fine, helped by a spare Steinbeck style. Fans of Steinbeck will be rewarded in the way that the film deals with various themes that were of clear interest to the author elsewhere (small but dashed dreams, American treatment of the blacks pre-Civil Rights, etc.).
As noted by other reviewers, the film throws up some interesting moral questions, not least being what to do with a saved enemy sailor complicit in the sinking of your own boat, with its concommittent loss of life? The changing power dynamic in the lifeboat also makes for interesting viewing - you cannot help but wonder what you would have done in the same circumstances, which is a strength of the film.
I have now watched it a few times, and found it compelling each time, and repeat viewings are certainly rewarding.
The Blu-ray print is very good, with the audio as clean as you could expect. I have yet to see the two French wartime shorts included, so I cannot comment upon them, but I'm sure that they will shed further light on the evolving Hitchcock.
In sum, this represents a bit of a lost curio in the Hitchcock canon; it lacks the budget and production values of a 'Vertigo' or 'North by Northwest', but it more than stands on its own merits. Well worth a look (or three!).

During World War 2, Alfred Hitchcock did many productions set around that political climate. To tell great stories set in that period and out of patriotism. To do his part in encouraging the public to involve itself during this conflict. Either at home or on the battlefield.

And among the movies he did, Lifeboat is one of those patriotic adventures.

A drama developed from an idea Hitchcock got, with a story conceived by John Steinbeck, and a script from Jo Swerling.

In its simple concept, an imaginative storyline. During the war, two boats sink; one from the Allies, the other from the Enemies. Amidst its survivors – all of them stuck on a single lifeboat – reporter Constance Porter, six boat comrades named John Kovac, Stanley Garrett, Alice Mackenzie, Joe Spencer, Gus Smith, and Willi; Mrs. Highley and her baby, and a Nazi survivor named Willi. A man who might be the captain of the enemy boat that the Allies just sank.

Through the weeks of survival on the boat, this team of people, with Kovac as Skipper, endures weathers & mental pressures while trying to survive. Among them hunger, thirst, despair, death, and fear toward the Nazi survivor. Who, as a navigator, may guide the crew into a trap. Especially as he claims to guide them in a specific direction, while looking at a hidden pocket compass which shows that he is guiding them the wrong way. So when will they find out the truth about this double-crosser? Will they get out of their sea nightmare or will they be doomed to a death at sea?

In its concept, the film is an incredible huis-clos. Within a boat. Amidst an open space of water, wind, sun, and stars. Making it quite an oppressive and suspenseful atmosphere for the film. No way can they leave this boat, no way can they escape the others and their torments/clashes. For though there might be a few times of laugh, dramas of all sorts will happen. Including some hair-raising ones I won’t reveal here.

In the cast, all the actors and actresses are excellent. Through various high winds and boats, they endure the work on that boat set. And as explained in the making-of, several of them either got ill or wounded during filming, which at times shut down the production. And of the main actress Tellullah Bankhead, everyone who worked on the film attested that she was difficult with the cast and crew.

Except for the opening and ending credits which has a great music theme from Hugo W. Friedhofer, the movie has no soundtrack. A great idea since it makes the drama on Lifeboat more tense and realistic. Without any melodramatic melodies; nor any pleonastic tunes. Only the actors and their performance giving the most sincere ambience to the story. And for that, only an excellent director could make his actors perform with the amazing quality we see on Lifeboat. Furthermore, it shows how you can make a great movie without wasting time with a soundtrack. How you can use your silences and your actors to create a soundtrack as memorable as a great radio drama.

Which is interesting since a radio adaptation was done of Lifeboat. And depending on the Blu-Rays or DVDS you get, that radio drama might be available on its special features. So watch carefully the edition you purchase, it might offer this great treat.

Though the movie is talkative, the film offers nice camera effects. Including impressive weather moments; with the rain and wind blowing on the survivors. And in its concept, the potential for a theatre production is there. As to how it could be produced, it would be quite a feat for the artists who might be interested in doing it.

For the script, the dialogues are excellent; and for each character, their personalities are perfectly expressed and different on screen. Some insolent, others ironic, another sarcastic. Various emotions on screen that make us realize how the life on this boat is a struggle maybe, but quite an experience for them all. And at 97 minutes, the story goes by in a great breeze. You never see time pass, and when the big dramas at the finale happen, you will be on the edge of your seat.

To conclude, though the film never got the big success it should have got, Lifeboat is a great display of Hitchcock’s talent as storyteller and filmmaker. Again, it has great potential to be done as a play. But many also noted it to be one of his best movies.

So if you are of Alfred Hitchcock and of war movies, give Lifeboat a try.

Boni: Unterhaltsames (in zwei ca. 20 min. Teilen) Interview mit Regiealtmeister Hitchcock, making-of

Der s/w Film kam 1944 in die US-Kino's. Man kann sich vorstellen, das zu jener Zeit die meisten Leute eher in Filme gingen, die mit der Kriegsthematik nix zu tun hatten. Zumindest in den europäischen Ländern bzw. Gebieten, wo Kinobesuche überhaupt (noch) möglich waren.

Der Streifen kommt mit ganz wenig aus und DAS ist genau das was mich u.a. interessierte und...
Taliluah Bankhead ist eine besondere Darstellerin, anders als andere Stars, hat etwas ordinäres, aber trotzdem (oder auch deshalb?) eine Aura, sehr erotische Frau. Hitchcock hatte immer ein Faible für das Besondere ...und die küsst auch echt - also nicht diese albernen Fernsehküsse, die jeder kennt und das damals! In den Extra's erfährt man auch, das sie keine Unterwäsche trägt, weshalb Sie da auch beim Dreh Ärger hatte usw...

Der Bösewicht, ein Nazi, stellt ein Österreicher mit (als Tarnung) niederländischen Akzent dar - ja man ist sich anfangs nicht sicher ob er ein Arsch ist. Letztendlich ist er praktisch der Chef auf dem Boot - weil er sich am besten mit Navigation auskennt und stark ist - was dem Film viel Kritik einbrachte, weil man nicht wollte das Deutsche als "Übermenschen" dastehen - was Hitch aber so auch nicht vor hatte und ich das beim Gucken auch nicht so aufgefasst habe. Das Ende verrate ich nicht, haha.

Fazit: Ich mag/liebe viele Hitchcockfilme, weil Sie Qualität, oftmals auch Anspruch haben - nicht nur was die Schauspielerei angeht. "Das Rettungsboot" gehört jetzt mit dazu - auch wenn es mMn. nicht sein aller bester Film/Thriller ist. Deshalb gute 4 Sterne von 5.
