This news throws the women in my village into a tizzy. The king will be sending out the royal guard to bring women of childbearing age to his castle in Jade City.
There is only one requirement: the woman must carry enough magic to produce an heir for him.
I’m a watered-down human with a mere ten percent dragon magic lineage, I know I won’t be chosen, but for some reason the magic sniffers command me to present myself to the king as a possible wife.
I’m ready to go to Jade City until my mother tells me a terrifying secret. A secret that could get me killed… by the king himself.
This is a full length fantasy romance standalone with an HEA!

But the King’s royal guard arrive, proclaiming that the king is looking for a new bride to provide him with an heir. Any woman of breeding age that is found to have magic over a certain level will be taken to the castle for the king to make his choice.
Arwen has no interest in being a womb for hire. Lucky for her she has virtually no magic. Except just before she reaches the kissing tent, her mother drops a bomb on her. She may have infinitely more magic than anyone in the kingdom.
The book started out very promisingly. Girl power hunter not interested in being a wife and baby mama to someone she doesn’t love. Finding out she might actually be the best candidate. Discovering the king isn’t a bad guy and actually is doing everything to protect his people, and is also firmly team girl power.
But then their “solution” to a problem that, for all they know, could be a one-off tragic situation, just one of those sad things that happens…I 𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 it. Truly. The fact that either of them would even consider that one written account of one singular event would be gospel for all of it was ludicrous. I understand Drae’s position more as he’d already lost so much but…come on. How was the doctor on board with this??
There was zero smut which I found odd considering basically 80% of the premise is about breeding an heir, but I didn’t realise it was YA before I dived in, which makes the cheesy parts more understandable.
It started out well but I was disappointed by the end unfortunately. Not quite enough substance to counteract the negatives.

I am an adult and read plenty of YA fantasy but this one is niave to the point of spoiling the plot. Yes, the MFC is only 18 but her stream of consciousness felt more akin to a 14 year old. For me there was no depth or chemistry between the romantic leads. The world building and backstory was also lacking and there were no twists in the plot. Everybody was the MC's friends - although don't expect that to mean their sudden death will in any way impede the momentum of the romantic story arc - obviously she is devastated, but, anyway, back to her.... It was lacking in intrigue, lacking in believable steaminess, and I didn't find either of the MC's particularly likeable.
Probably I am just too old, this is more fantasy Sweet Valley High than fantasy Georgette Heyer. I won't be reading the rest of the series, I am really not sure why this is is the Amazon top 100 fantasy books, it's probably the worst one I have read in the last few years and many I would recommend are not featured on the list.

It also saved me after like 4 crappy reads in a row so there’s that too.
I adore all the characters both main and supporting. The romance was unique because of the kings motivations. Such a huge emphasis on having an heir isn’t someone usually covered in romances but worked very well in this case.
I literally don’t have a bad thing to say and I can’t wait for the next book (which incidentally I came across first, but alas is not released yet)
10/10 would recommend.

I’m really looking forward to the next instalment.
