I haven't tried many recipes yet, but I really enjoy the ones I've made so far. Being a Vietnamese American, it's hard to find good tasting Vietnamese recipes in English (finding them in English is practically unheard of). I will say though, being a Northern vietnamese American, the recipes are a little bland for me. Otherwise, I absolutely recommend this book to any chef; those who want to explore Vietnamese cooking for the first time, and those who want to hold onto his/ her own cultural heritage

I am Vietnamese American, and although my mother was a great cook, my interest in cooking did not start until I had my son a few years ago. And with my mother long gone, I searched for a cookbook that would allow me to replicate some of her recipes, to bring back some lovely memories and flavors.

I have found it with Andrea's book and it is my 'bible' for Vietnamese recipes. I have made at least 3-4 recipes to date, and they have been delicious. Granted, I do personalize recipes to my own taste, as everyone should, but the basic guideline is there in very clear written instructions.

Thank you Andrea, for sharing your immense talent with fellow foodies and for making me proud to cook Vietnamese dishes for my friends and family!

I collect cookbooks and this one is a must have and nice addition to my shelf. I first stumbled across Andrea Nguyen on Youtube and watched her cooking demonstration she did at the Google headquarters for their staff. I instantly liked her personality and also could tell she knew what she was talking about. I then sampled a piece of her book on my kindle and knew right there that I had to buy the hardback version of this book to fully appreciate the photos. If you love Vietnamese food you should add this book to your collection.

i typically buy a book because i want more than what a google search will uncover. in the case of this book, i was disappointed to learn that i was fine with just the internet. my biggest complaint is that there aren't enough photos (approx 1 full-page photo for every 8 pages of text). ideally, i'd like to see every recipe be accompanied by at least one photo. it's especially important for exotic cuisines such as vietnamese. i'm fortunate to live in an area where streets are lined with pho joints, but for most of america pho is a mystery for which this book does not offer any visual insight. there's no doubt to the authenticity of the recipes and the author, but this book could've been so much more had it not skimped on the visuals. even the CIA book had more photos, each of which were incredibly useful.

This cookbook is the BEST Vietnamese cookbook that I've seen out there. It is incredible! The recipes themselves are wonderful....I love the way the author has thoroughly described each of them while providing the necessary ingredients, etc. She does so in a way that makes it actually possible to recreate her culinary gems. The history behind her putting together this cookbook was fascinating to read as well. If you're interested in cooking a healthy, fresh and delectable Vietnamese dish, while learning about the Vietnamese culture as well, then this book is for you. You simply cannot go wrong with any recipe. This is now my Vietnamese cookbook bible!

Could not wait to get this highly praised book as I love to cook Vietnamese food and have an extensive cookbook collection. I enjoyed every bit of the book-until I tried three recipes one night. One came out just fine-the other two -the beef stew and the egg, shrimp, scallion pancakes were duds. The marinated meat tasted wonderful when browned, but once tomatoes were added to the dish it became just another beef stew. The pancakes had no taste. On the other hand, the water spinach with garlic was first rate. I will try some other recipes and keep my culinary fingers crossed.

Have become a total convert and now love this cookbook. The beef pho was outstanding and so were the other recipes I have tried since first writing the first review

This is the best book on Vietnamese cooking that I own. I was so fascinated by the story of her family's escape from Saigon to the USA and their lives in the LA area that I was unable to lay the book down until I had read it all. The recipes in this book are some favorite dishes that I remember from Viet. I recommend this book to everyone who loves this type cuisine. I purchased the Kindle version as well as the hard copy and I use both as a guide in preparation of these dishes.

Great book, however I wish there were MORE PICTURES! I wish I went to a bookstore to check all the Vietnamese cookbooks out so I could find one that had a picture for every recipe. I'm the type that when I see something that looks delicious, I want to make it. However, the recipes seem very authentic and there are plenty of tips on how to make ingredients such as the carmelized sugar. Overall, a good book with plenty of varieties of recipes. Pictures in a cookbook are just so important to me so I took off one star for it.

Very easy to follow. Makes cooking Vietnamese food so much easier. There are actual measurements (my parents don't measure anything - "just a little bit of this and a little bit of that") in this book. It has simple food that my family can enjoy. Nothing super fancy. It is a very organized book. It is easy to look up the recipe by Vietnamese or English which is awesome.
I would highly recommend this cookbook if you are wanting to cook Vietnamese food.

Great pictures. Also like the list and descriptions of needed ingredients and brand recommendations. I got both the hardcover edition and the Kindle edition on my iPad. I take the iPad to the Asian market with me to find ingredients. Made three of the recipes so far and everyone was very good.
