The author did a brilliant job of twisting the readers mind until you don't know who to trust anymore. I suspected everyone in turns only to be fooled at the end. A solid 5 stars for me!
Set in a small town in Surrey with a claustrophobic atmosphere that gave me goosebumps, the story is told from two different points of views: one is Jack, a detective trying to solve the murder of a woman while, at the same time, trying to hide the fact that he had spent the previous evening with the victim and Anna, the journalist determined to prove that she is really good at her job so she conducts her own investigation of the murder, but she has her own secrets to hide. Who can you trust? What are they hiding? And are they involved in the crime?
For one who reads many, way too many, thrillers I am surprised when a story manages to still keep me guessing and surprises me over and over again. This book has everything I love in psychological thrillers:
unreliable characters full of secrets: ✅
high tension that keeps me on the edge of my seat: ✅
twists that I never see coming: ✅
a surprising and shocking ending that makes me love the story even more: ✅
Would I recommend this novel? Of course, 100%. It is suspenseful, unpredictable and gripping. The only problem that I had with His & Hers is that I was so immersed in the story that I found myself reading through the night which wasn’t a very good idea. This is such a chilling read that every time I heard a noise from outside I would jump out of my skin, but I couldn’t stop reading!
"His & Hers" by Alice Feeney was a delight to read, a real masterpiece of the thriller genre.
The premise is deceptively straightforward: there's a murderer on the loose, and two unreliable first-person narrators - BBC journalist Anna Andrews and DCI Jack Harper, who used to be married to each other - alternate in telling the story, each seemingly pointing an accusatory finger at the other as the possible culprit.
But nothing is what it seems, and many, *many* more plausible perps will be discovered and discarded throughout the story, until the very last twist in the very last page.
The ending *will* blow your mind, even if you thought you had it all figured out (and you will think that, several times over, through the narration).
I was initially wary of this novel, as I tend to dislike the unreliable narrator technique, since it is often used by mediocre authors as a cheap circus trick to cheat the reader. But this is definitely not the case with "His & Hers": there's no cheating the reader in this book, and nothing is cheap or mediocre in these pages.
The plot is brilliantly constructed and chiselled to perfection: no deus ex machina required, no loose ends left. Reading "His & Hers" will make you journey across an ever-changing landscape of lies, secrets and hidden guilts, in which clues and false leads are so tightly woven together as to completely blur the line between true and false, right and wrong, good and evil.
The characters - all of them, even the minor ones - feel like living, breathing human beings in their flawed complexity. You will end up relating to each and every one of them, even the ones you can't help fearing or despising.
The writing style is sharp and polished, with no frills and not a word out of place.
This must be the best thriller I've read in a very long time, and the experience was made even better by the amazing job Richard Armitage and Stephanie Racine did in narrating the audiobook

It is written in a very filmic style and it is very easy to imagine this being dramatised and brought to a cinema or tv screen. Although the author is British and the story is set in Britain, there were frequent occasions when this book struck me as being more American in its style.
It is a good book and an enjoyable read, but I found it a bit too contrived to count among the better books in this genre.

The ‘his’ and ‘hers’ of the title are Chief Inspector Jack Harper and TV journalist Anna Andrews, who are thrown together for the investigation of a brutal village murder. As they take turns narrating the story, it becomes clear that they both have links to the dead woman and to each other, and that there’s a whole web of secrets and lies they are trying to keep hidden.
Then — drumroll — there’s the third narrator, the chilling voice of the murderer, who in turn sounds like Jack, then Anna, then just about every other character in the book, including the dog.
The plot is a study in misdirection and obfuscation, with more twists than a corkscrew and red herrings galore. Feeney leads you by the nose down blind alley after blind alley, drip feeding hints and planting suggestions along the way.
And just when you think you’ve got it sussed, you’re right back to square one — not once, not twice, but again and again. I swear, I had every character, but the right one, fingered as the murderer, and when the big reveal finally came, you could have knocked me over with a feather.
This book is brilliant, no question. And it’s brilliant because it is much more than a murder mystery. It’s about truth and lies, lies that are told so often they become truths, and truths that get muddied by memory and time. I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to read more from Alice Feeney.
Thanks for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful. You can find more candid book reviews on my Amazon profile page.

The plot was original, but I found the first third very lacking in terms of incident. After that it picked up just enough to keep me reading and I thought the last third was very good, with lots happening and constant guessing as to the murderer's identity. However, when the culprit was revealed, I found it rather info-dumpy and a tad too far-fetched.
That said, I thought the ambiguity around Priya was excellent, especially at the end.
Overall, 3 out of 5 stars because I nearly gave up several times, mainly due to a lack of anything happening, and partly due to an implausible killer.

Having got the negatives out of the way the book is well crafted and the characters are well constructed. I really liked Anna and Jack and didn't have much difficulty in believing either of them. I guessed very early on who one character was but I think you were supposed to because of the route the author took you down- one particular phrase nailed it. In fact there are several phrases in this book which I particularly liked. In these times of wanting to continually be shocked on every page with the most "amazing, jaw dropping twist ever" Alice Feeney does well to ignore this and concentrate on a gradual reveal of the story bit by bit. Natural plot progression is just so much better than "rabbit out the hat" moments.
The story alternates between Him and Hers (possibly better as the title- His and Hers?) with a third voice being the murderer (who I liked too.....!)
The book lost a star for Americanisms but because I couldn't think of a better way than Jack being a police officer (despite the unbelievable bits at the beginning) I decided stretching credibility was fair game.
This is the third Alice Feeney book I have read and happy to discover there is one more! Sometimes I Lie and Rock Paper Scissors are brilliant too and highly recommended. I hope the TV companies do the book justice
