Non mi capacito delle tantissime recensioni positive: bisogna essere dei primitivi per apprezzarlo. Ho acquistato l'ebook ma ho iniziato l'ascolto su Audible prima di leggerlo. Dopo credo un paio di capitoli l'ho abbandonato.
Senza dubbio il peggior libro "letto".

Inizia con una "bella" giustificazione della violenza domestica, perché alla fine c'era "amore". I genitori litigano violentemente con coltelli in mano davanti ai figli, poi all'improvviso si buttano a terra e copulano. Padre ubriaco fisso che picchia moglie e figli e li maltratta. Ai figli viene insegnato che devono dire la verità, ma se commettono qualche crimine (furto per esempio) l'importante è che non si facciano beccare. Il padre chiede al figlio maggiore di rubare nella ditta del suo (del figlio) datore di lavoro, il figlio si rifiuta e il padre cerca di picchiarlo: il figlio reagisce e lo colpisce in testa, il padre crolla e sembra morto, il figlio quindi piange ma il padre si riprende e da quel momento mostra rispetto al figlio perché ha avuto il coraggio di reagire da uomo. E tutto questo non è condannato dallo scrittore e attore, anzi! Viene letto in positivo! In fondo c'era amore. Ognuno di questi (e altri) eventi negativi (red light, semaforo rosso) viene trasformato in "greenlight" (semaforo verde) e occasione di crescita. Ma tutto bene??? Questo libro mostra quanto possa essere sporca e malata la nostra società: violenza domestica, rubare ma mi raccomando non farsi beccare, giustificare tutto questo e apprezzare il libro in cui è riportato tutto questo!
Chi subisce violenza fisica da parte del/della compagno/a o dei genitori o di chiunque sia, deve denunciare e allontanare queste persone! Ma quale semaforo verde!!!

Povero Matthew, evidentemente non ha avuto un supporto psicologico sufficiente per arrivare a giustificare tutto questo.
Libro diseducativo!!!
Leggete "Nato fuori legge" di Trevor Noah: anche nella sua famiglia c'è stata violenza domestica, ma lui non ha mai interpretato gli eventi in questo modo. Anzi! Quello sì che è un libro che parla di violenza e brutalità ma che è educativo (oltre che toccante, pieno di amore e a tratti ironico).

Ho comprato questo libro su consiglio di un mio amico e ne sono rimasto piacevolmente sorpreso.
Libro molto intimo e profondo, dove Matthew descrive sia la situazione familiare abbastanza particolare che i suoi diversi stati d'animo all'interno dei momenti più importanti della sua vita.
Da questi ne emerge la figura di un uomo con un'etica chiara e che riesce a trovare una soluzione anche quando una soluzione non c'è. Che dire, personaggio fantastico e libro ancora di più, molto curato e quindi bellissimo anche esteticamente.

An extraordinary story, a true life based on values, choices and the need to find oneself and to be honest with oneself first of all. The way to mix dreams, needs, destiny as you're able to forsee, to acknowledge and to direct them while "livin" and believing. Life is what you're "livin", as Matthew McConaughey says to us all.

Un libro che consiglierei a chiunque. Leggero, scorrevole, divertente e interessante. Matthew non è uno scrittore ma ha la capacità di raccontare la propria storia lasciando il lettore incollato alla pagina. L'ho letto in pochi giorni perché l'ho trovato molto bello. Racconta episodi di vita reali che, tuttavia, lasciano il segno. Non è la solita autobiografia, anzi! Parla relativamente poco della sua vita da attore, e forse è proprio ciò che lo rende così autentico e reale.

Fascinating memoir written by a talented storyteller

This is a phenomenal book. McConaughey's way of writing allows you to step into his shoes. It's going to be hard for you to put the book down. It is an unconventional memoir, the book has an atypical structure (index, vignettes and others), it also contains excerpts from the author's journal he's written over the years which I think contributes to the "realness" of this book. I was a bit skeptical at first, but I was (gladly) proven wrong. Grab a copy, you won't regret it. McConaughey is a talented storyteller. Well done!

Insulting statement

All races matter. We’ve all experienced discrimination. But, this statement takes the cake. Wow!
“All lives can’t matter until Black Lives Matter more” What? Does this make you feel better. This statement was written at the end of the book. I would not have proceeded any further had it been at the beginning.

Greenlights is a remarkable first book from an already renowned artist. Kind of a mashup of Anthony Bourdain with Ernest Hemingway, McConaughey tells stories with the aplomb of accomplished raconteur. Part memoir, part life guide and part ethic Greenlights is worth reading for many beyond McConaughey’s fan base; basically anyone who likes a good man’s man adventure story.

Born into the lower middle class in East Texas, McConaughey looks back nostalgically at a childhood few would envy. His parents divorced and remarried each other twice, he was subject to corporal punishment and money was always an issue. Yet he doesn’t complain about disadvantage. In fact he honors his parents despite their shortcomings. He adheres to a philosophy of choosing to recalibrate what seems like the inevitable until it turns into a green light or way forward in life.

After a rite of passage involving brawling with a barroom bouncer, McConaughey pursued acting with the drive and hard work ethic that was instilled into him. Finding early success, he choose to live in a way directly opposite to the Hollywood scene. Traveling the country with his dog, going off on expeditions to the middle of Africa and South America, McConaughey sees livin (drop the g to indicate it’s always a verb) as more than just the material success and creature comforts many of us settle on.

Finally, after years of womanizing, McConaughey settled into a successful monogamous relationship and fulfilled his life long ambition of being a father. Nearly simultaneously he chose to walk away from lucrative rom-coms to focus on something more artistic. Initially successful in winning an Oscar for the Dallas Buyers Club, McConaughey admits that he hasn’t achieved the popular success he envisioned. But that is all grist for the mill, experiments in livin that are ongoing.

If this is the kind of man you would like to read about, Greenlights will be an enjoyable and inspirational read. It’s rare that a successful actor has such a distinctive off air personality. But if you’re turned off by physical conflict, wild adventures and a man who brags about rarely showering alone than Greenlights is not for you.

Personally, while not finding all parts of McConaughey’s biography admirable, I found enough of him to be so different than what Hollywood typically churns out that the book was worth reading. Recommended to all who feel they’re similarly traveling in unmapped regions and want to gather around the campfire to hear a fellow wanderer’s tales.

Beyond Disappointing!!!!!!!

This may possibly be the worst book I have ever read (actually couldn’t finish). I pre-ordered the audible and ordered the physical copy. I returned the audio, just awful. I really don’t like to leave bad reviews. However, you might like this book if you have Neanderthal tendencies. It starts with justification of domestic violence. As a child having to watch his parents physically fight, with knives, then making up and making love on the kitchen floor. What?!?!? As a child he must tell the truth, but his family believe in stealing, as long as you don’t get caught. His father tells Matthew’s brother to go and steal from the company he works for by his father, he does not want to. This is followed by the father getting into a fight with his son, he should man up and steal. This book is what is wrong with so many people in society. You must tell the truth, but if you lie, do not get caught. Matthew writes with so many adjectives that he must have literally had a thesaurus open and used every single synonym for a word. This is a very bizarre book from a man that was exposed to emotional and physical abuse as a child. This is not a book of wisdom, this is a book of narcissism and justification of violence. Very disappointed and I don’t think I can ever watch another film with him without this books contents coming to mind.

Could not put it down-always a sure sign of a good read. But it is so much more. McConaughey's reflections on life, of himself, of the world he lives in speak to the heart, make you take pause and do a little internal reflection for yourself.

A refreshing read where it is so clear that he is a man to is true to himself and his loved ones - not willing to sell his soul.

If I have one critique it is that with its unusual presentation - there are pages that are barely readable. They do not detract from the storyline but because of the illegibility - they do not add to it.

I'm not sure what I was expecting from a book written Matthew McConnaughy. The analogy of 'Know Your Style' was good. However, I suspect this was written by somebody else. The scrawled poems (which, lets be honest, are not going to ignite much intelligence) do not align with the text. It's as if someone has reviewed his notes, listened to his lilting accent, and manufactured a book. The merchandise that is now being promoted on social media compounds my suspicion that this is certainly not a genuine memoir.
