Recensione
"An engaging and atmospheric read, Lisa beautifully conjures up the half-child half-adult lives of young teenagers." (Jane Fallon)
"Oh but I loved this book – a magical garden right in the centre of the city, a long, hot summer simmering away, a group of young teens, lurching between boredom and passion and ripe for their lives to start. And at its centre a dark and disturbing mystery that keeps you turning the pages long into the night. Lisa Jewell is the most compassionate storyteller. She writes with such lightness of touch, yet her books pack a powerful punch. A stunning, beautiful, mesmerising book that everyone will be reading this summer." (Tamar Cohen)
"I was utterly gripped from the start… basically a great read." (Irish Independent)
"Another winner. Beautiful writing, believable characters, a pacy narrative and dark secrets combine to make this a gripping read." (Daily Mail)
"A dark, propulsive thriller about teenage relationships, family secrets and dysfunctional parenting." (Metro)
"[Lisa Jewell] is moving into fascinating, more complex psychological territory with each book" (Jojo Moyes)
"A dark, compelling story." (Woman & Home)
"Full of twists and turns." (Prima Review)
"A compelling read." (Good Housekeeping)
"Dark and scarily believable, this is a must-read" (Fabulous Magazine)
"Lisa creates beguiling characters, which dazzle from the page. This is a terrific suspense story told with that brooding promise of danger that taunts us to read on, to chase the elusive truth at the heart of the book." (Rachel Hore)
"Compelling, intriguing and unputdownable" (Candis) --Questo testo si riferisce a un'edizione fuori stampa o non disponibile di questo titolo.

Having recently listened to an audio version of the latest release from Lisa Jewell and finding it a compelling novel I came across The Girls and was intrigued by the premise which hints at a dark and emotive crime thriller. Lisa Jewell is thought of by many as a typical chick-lit author, however I find her stories offer a level of depth that transcends the stereotypical domain of that genre and often leaves readers wondering just how they would respond in a similar situation. Although the premise for The Girls certainly reads as a crime thriller, it is just as much about family life, parenting and the age when pre-pubescent teens hit twelve/thirteen and sit awkwardly between family life and growing independence.
The opening discovery of thirteen-year-old Grace Wild unconscious and with her clothing in disarray at a communal garden party sets the tone for what is to come and Jewell delivers a before and after analysis of the events in a well structured novel. These events occur on the evening of the Virginia Crescent summer garden party in the communal garden that surrounds the homes of a handful of admittedly eclectic families. Leading up to this pivotal event readers meet newly single parent, Clare Wild, and her two daughters, Grace and Pip who find themselves rehoused amidst what should be an oasis of tranquillity and one of the few green spaces in the midst of London. Husband Chris has experienced a severe schizophrenic episode which has seen him send their former home up in smoke and led to his detention in psychiatric care. Still digesting the fact that Chris set fire to their home without knowing whether his children were inside or not leaves Clare heartbroken. Whilst Pip writes to her father and wants him home, stroppy sister Grace appears rather blasé and quickly adjusts to life in their new surroundings. Clare, meanwhile, is in turmoil at coming to the realisation that their own father could do harm to his offspring. But in being overly vigilant in keeping her children away from Chris and his erratic behaviour protective mother Clare is remiss to the dangers that lurk in the communal garden. Just what secrets does the picturesque garden hold and can Clare implicitly trust those neighbour that share the space? As Pip learns more about the strange events which led to a fifteen-year-old girl dying some thirty-years ago, she stands apart from the unfolding drama that her mother and sister quickly seem consumed by.
Located in West Hampstead the mixed social demographic sees a variety of families living in the surrounding homes and the first half (before) is an intriguing and creepy study of a life with little privacy and the mix of children whose very different parents seem preoccupied by their own dramas. As Grace is lured into the clique of teenagers, all facing their own battles, it is younger sister Pip who observes the dark undercurrents and fleeting glances that first makes her fret that the communal gardens aren't quite as safe as she first believed. Pip's letters to her father are revelatory and heart-rending and I ached for how her father's mental illness and the ensuing move had had such a devastating and unforeseen side-effect on the Wild family. Some very realistic characters and a variety of odd situations leave the reader on edge and give way to a palpable sense of tension as the first half leads up to the fateful night. Lisa Jewell portrays all of her soon to be teenagers as a mixture of angst, hormones, and a complicated muddle of emotions. Despite not being a parent I found The Girls a hugely compelling story but I expect for parents it will resonate even more.
As the second part picks over the events of Grace's experience; specifically what did happen and who is responsible, the appearance of two police officers seems to slow the narrative down. Thus it is disappointing that the building suspense leads to a slightly lacklustre finish. The brief glimpse of life ten-months after the dramatic events provides an opportunity for reflection. As a parent I can imagine this is an uncomfortable read showing how the best intentions to protect and foster a loving family home can unintentionally come to have the very opposite effect.
